Nutanix AHV Virtualization Other Solutions Considered

Atif Najam - PeerSpot reviewer
Chief Information Officer and Program Lead at Gatron Industries Ltd

We were looking for a turnkey solution for a hyperconverged system.

There were several options available, including Nutanix with VMware vSphere as the virtualization layer, Hyper-V as the virtualization layer, and AHV as the virtualization layer.

Certain feature sets are only available with AHV hypervisors when it comes to Nutanix clusters.

My company chose Nutanix AHV Virtualization over other platforms in the market since it was a recommendation made by the main office of my company. My company mostly operates from South Africa, and from there, we get the direction to go ahead with our work, so today, they can suggest we use one platform, while tomorrow, they may recommend another.

We utilize alternative solutions such as VMware or Microsoft. Each of these products comes as a distinct offering, whereas Nutanix AHV comes as a bundled package.

Upon acquiring a Nutanix system, all necessary components are readily available, eliminating the need for additional APN, networking, or application software like HRA. There's no requirement for supplementary bundled products. This aspect truly sets Nutanix AHV apart as a remarkable and comprehensive solution.

We assessed many solutions including SimpliVity from HPE, VxRail from Dell, and AHV from Nutanix. We did a comparison and we found that Nutanix AHV fit our budget and our feature requirements.

Some other firms were working with HP on their systems, but in the end, they migrated to Nutanix because of support issues.

There are solutions by HP and NetApp, but you cannot compare them to Nutanix because it supports HP, Hyper-V, and VMware as well.

Nutanix is the only player in the market who is actually providing you with the hyper-converged infrastructure. You can either choose their own AHV hypervisor, or you can have VMware on top of it as a hypervisor to base the operating system. This gives a benefit over others who don't offer the same kind of infrastructure for both hypervisors.

You cannot mix it, that's one thing that is true across the board. However, you do have a choice of hypervisor. For some customers, they have already invested in VMware and they want to move to hyper-converged infrastructure. So, Nutanix would be comparatively a better choice, which can impact your previous investment and you can build your virtual hyper-converged infrastructure on Nutanix.

There are many other options that we can choose from that will not have the same problems in terms of compatibility. In the future, we will probably move to Dell to use a different solution.
