Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Benefits

In a single pane of glass, you get all the insights about your infrastructure. Earlier, in the orthodox three-tier architecture, you had multiple UIs. You also needed multiple expertise to take care of things. It used to take more time to troubleshoot and identify where exactly the issue was. You had to get your analytics, get your logs, and then troubleshoot. All this is avoided with the Nutanix architecture. It is hardware agnostic. For example, if an organization has a contract for the HPE hardware or they have an HPE footprint or a Dell footprint in their DC, they can go with that particular hardware and have Nutanix on top of it. Nutanix does not force you to buy only Nutanix hardware. Other vendors, such as VMware, make you buy their hardware so that their product works fine, but that is not the case with Nutanix. It is hardware agnostic.

The applications that are run on Nutanix are client-side applications. There are banking or financial applications. They also have Citrix on Nutanix for the virtual desktop. They also have Oracle Database and SAP running properly on the Nutanix hardware or architecture. You can put any application available in the market, such as Oracle Database, MySQL, or NoSQL, and you will not have any slowness or anything like that with that application. Every application works smoothly on the Nutanix platform. It is all tested.

It is much easier to deploy Nutanix as compared to other solutions. It saves you deployment time. Usually, in a big organization, the planning itself takes around a month. You also need permissions, and then you deploy a solution, so deployment takes time, but that is not the case with Nutanix, which is an advantage. You can get all necessary permissions from your management and then in one day or half a day, you can have your cluster. If you purchase the whole Nutanix portfolio with Nutanix Karbon, Nutanix Flow, and other solutions, deployment is very easy. You can put it into production.

It reduces the downtime. A cluster has multiple nodes in the backend. If you want to upgrade the firmware or you want to upgrade AHV or the hardware, it will do that one by one. It will put some nodes into maintenance mode. It will move some of the virtual machines to other nodes in a cluster. It will take care of the redundancy part. It will take care of your data. The data also gets migrated to those nodes so that it is available locally. You avoid all the hops that are there in the three-tier architecture. It reduces the hops and the time to access your data and gives you the output. All this is taken care of in the Nutanix architecture.

Snapshot is one of the key features that reduce downtime. It gives clients more power to define their RTO and RPO, which is a valuable aspect of the Nutanix architecture. Even in the case of DC/DR, if your DC goes down, you can use the data protection domain and get your DR site up and running. It helps clients achieve their RTO and RPO.

Our clients could realize its benefits in a week. I have worked on more than 10 major deployments. They already had some pain areas, and they wanted to mitigate those areas. We positioned Nutanix and did the PoC, and they were already happy with this solution at the PoC level. We did not have to do deployment and put it in production for them to see its benefits. Based on my experience with Nutanix, in a week's time, they get to know its features and the fact that it works smoothly.

All applications have dependencies. They have some hardware or networking requirements. You need to have the hardware accordingly in your DC. By buying Nutanix, our clients have managed to avoid all these requirements. In a single box, they get all the things, so they do not have to worry about the backend. Their applications work smoothly. They can have any application. They can even have VDI applications such as Citrix VDI or VMware Workspace on top of Nutanix. It supports all the platforms. Our clients are very happy with Nutanix. They do not have to do any hardware upgrades.

It eliminates the legacy infrastructure. That is the main purpose of HCI. For HCI, Nutanix has been in the number one position for many years. In the three-tier architecture, there used to be a frontend application, a middleware, and a backend database. On the hardware front also, you had to put your servers, your SAN switches, and your backend storage. You had multiple footprints in your DC. You also had more power consumption. Nutanix reduces power consumption, troubleshooting, and maintenance. You do not need a separate team for maintenance. Irrespective of the hardware, you get a single point of contact for any support. All these solutions are consolidated under one roof, which is very beneficial.

We have done the whole DC migration to Nutanix. The client had five to six racks, and they got reduced to two racks by using Nutanix. It takes very less space. It helps to reduce your DC footprint and power consumption. Troubleshooting is very easy. You can also reduce the number of hops. It eliminates the whole process where the front end puts the request to middleware, which then goes to the backend and fetches the data from the storage. You can have your data locally, and then there is just a single hop. You get the output faster. It makes your applications run smoother and faster as well while responding to a request.

Nutanix NCI’s features help our organization reduce downtime. We use RA3 stuff in our clusters. If there is any issue with the hardware, node, or something else, my cluster is up and running. Over these three years, we have probably upgraded the Nutanix software twice or thrice. We had to restart nodes multiple times during this upgrade, and none of our users felt that something was going on. They did not have any issues related to slow response or no response from the applications while we had to shut down one of the nodes, put it into maintenance, apply the patches, bring the node up, and then make it join the cluster. It was smooth.

It has helped with consolidation. Previously, we had more than 40 servers, and now we have only 6 nodes. It is a lot easier to manage these 6 nodes. With the hardware, if something goes wrong, such as the hard disk showing amber, I have to create a ticket, share the logs, and then the engineer will come and check. After that, the part will come. It can come at 2 AM or 4 AM. We have to be physically present. They will shut down the server, take out that hard disk, and replace the hard disk, and then we will have to bring up the service. We have to spend a lot of time.

They have a product for database management called Nutanix Era, but we do not use that. We have not deployed it over here. We primarily use this HCI for making VMs and running web applications and their databases. We have migrated database services but not through the Nutanix Era. We have our own system, so we used that. The purpose of migration was to have a single pane of glass for management. The downtime is less, and the service becomes a smooth service. The users who are using the service are happy.

We managed a critical DB where different agents have to interoperate to make it easy for the technicians who are not skilled in IT. With Nutanix, we are able to arrange a fully automatic state that provides only a simple web interface for the technicians. Then we build the system, that integrates all the information automatically without the need for data entry. It helps us make a low code integration without developing much more software which is easier than what we had to do in the past.

Nutanix offers a unified platform for managing databases, virtual machines, and applications. This simplifies management by consolidating everything into a single interface.

While Nutanix may have a higher upfront cost compared to other hypervisors, it can significantly reduce the resources needed for infrastructure management. With our previous hypervisor, we needed nearly ten IT personnel. Nutanix has allowed us to streamline our team to just three members.

We use a combination of database technologies, including SQL databases and web servers such as IIS, BHP, and NGINX.

Nutanix features helped our organization reduce downtime. I don't recall the last time we had downtime related to Nutanix because it is such a stable product.

Nutanix, a reliable product, helps us streamline our processes, which in turn improves company revenue. We began to see the benefits after two years, with a 40 percent reduction in operational costs.

We migrated 200 servers from AWS to Nutanix.

Nutanix may not consolidate applications, but it helps us run them more efficiently on its platform.

Updating is simple with one click. I would rate the updating processes 10 out of 10.

Adding compute and storage on demand is not difficult. However, we need to factor in the existing and new firmware and software requirements.

By using more than one cluster, if any node is down, the VMs can be moved to a remaining node, and that helps us to work without any downtime. A node can be moved, online, to another node, which minimizes downtime as much as possible.

Flow Network Security for microsegmentation also helps in maintaining security. For example, we can protect servers with policies between an application server and a database server.

Previously we had our own storage, stand-alone servers, and stand-alone network. For any new project, it would take us at least six months until we could provide a new server. Now, when we have a new product, we can avoid that long wait and provide a server in hours.

We have also moved all our servers to Nutanix and have been able to eliminate our legacy servers and infrastructure.

And it keeps our IT staff informed by email regarding any error or alert. They log in and get a full view of all our servers, including memory, storage, and CPU usage. It helps our IT staff to be more productive.

Any single server or one-plus-one server is very difficult to manage if there is hardware failure. But with this solution, the transition is seamless because a 10-plus-one redundancy is built into the system.

With the click of a button, we can migrate the services to other servers. We have never had any downtime and we are a 24/7 operation. Production has continued,

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure also helps us to optimize power utilization and the rack space used in the data center, resulting in overall energy savings.

These were immediate advantages because, eight to 10 years back, this was a new technology. We tried it with our less critical operations, and we slowly introduced more production-critical workloads.

Also, we were using Active Directory and other SQL databases on individual servers. We were able to consolidate them into a single database. That helps with ease of operations and enables taking backups from a single place. We migrated all our standard database structures and we don't need a cluster mechanism because the cluster or failover mechanism is built into the Nutanix architecture.

It is a single platform to manage services. It starts at the infrastructure level, but Nutanix also offers other products that are more about services, not about infrastructure. Typical IT organizations know a lot about IT infrastructure, VMs, storage, and network. Nutanix is trying to reduce this workload and give you more time to think about services that are of benefit to your business because knowing about infrastructure is not of benefit at the business level.

Our clients run SAP HANA, Microsoft SQL databases, Oracle databases, and even MySQL databases on Nutanix. There are no limits. In 2012, they started with a high focus on VDI use cases because they were able to solve the problem of the traditional infrastructure solutions. Server virtualization and enterprise or mission-critical applications are also among the broad portfolio of use cases. I am sure you can run any use case on the Nutanix platform.

NCI’s features have helped our clients' organizations reduce downtime. One of the most impactful aspects is that once the SLAs of your services are declared or you know what your SLA requirements are, you can just implement or move the services to match the SLAs. This is one thing, and then you also have runbooks. High availability is not something you do once and it is done. It is a constant process of changes. You need to look at things, fix them, and test them. With Nutanix, you are able to do all of that. You have the ability to have runbooks where if there is an impact and something is down, you can specify how to start it again. This can be written in a runbook, so you have not only the technical ability but also the operational ability to recover from failures.

It helps to know the resource consumption. You know which resources are being consumed and which systems are over-provisioned. You can right-size them. You see the applications that are affecting other things. There is machine learning or artificial intelligence running at the backend telling you, "Look, these are the things we see." If there are any anomalies, you get messages saying that something is strange or going above the expected limits or below the expected reserve usage. You get to know if there is something going on that is different from the past. You can also do capacity management and planning. For example, if you have to run 20 more databases, you can assess if there are enough resources in your environment. In the end, you simplify things. You do not have to do the things that you did in the past but are of no value to the business, such as capacity management. If you are good at it, you will spend less on hardware, but it is not the business. It is just efficiency and consumption of resources, and it is automatically done for you with Nutanix. You do not have to do it.

For a client, we moved the complete IT infrastructure to the Nutanix infrastructure based on NCI. We moved hundreds of virtual machines or services. There is also a tool to do this, which belongs to AHV, not to AOS. AOS is for multi-cloud infrastructure. It is hypervisor agnostic, which means you can run the hypervisor you want such as AHV, Hyper-V, vSphere, etc. You can even select different hypervisors for different infrastructures. Generally, you move services at the hypervisor level, and it is easy to move services within the same hypervisor. If you want to move services across hypervisor where, for example, you decide on Nutanix and you also decide to switch from vSphere to AHV, there is a tool called Move that allows you to plan the migration process and deploy.

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure has helped to improve our organization by reducing cost and complexity, and giving us more visibility. It has helped with the continuous integration and continuous development approach, and through its compatibility with the major cloud service providers.

Because NCI has hybrid cloud capabilities, we can integrate it with multiple cloud providers and that means we have complete geographical redundancy. There has not been any downtime and, with the help of containers running our platforms, we haven't faced any critical challenges. Since the deployment, we have not faced any type of SLA agreement-related issue or any type of situation where we lost revenues.

When it comes to reducing downtime, the most impactful features are the automated self-healing and recovery of the hosted applications. If a particular host is having some type of critical issue, a physical problem, a high-level process issue, or any type of high CPU utilization, there is an automatic internal alert and the self-healing and recovery automatically place the application on a new host. The user does not face any challenges, latency, or downtime.

The solution also has very robust security features, like integration with third-party authentication platforms and role-based access controls with different access levels. These are key features that help reduce operational challenges. We have complete visibility into which users we go with for administrative abilities and which users have certain types of role-based access privileges. These are very robust capabilities.

It has also helped us with application consolidation and that is very important in terms of reducing the cost, by having those applications on a single platform. Once we deployed NCI, moved key portions to it, and were completely satisfied that everything was working per our requirements, we decommissioned most of our legacy systems.

We eliminated our on-premises host and clusters because they cost a lot in the consumption of space and overall maintenance of the infrastructure. Compared to the cloud, hosting and managing applications requires more team members for operations, implementation, and field engineers. By working with those platforms in Cloud Infrastructure, we have seen a lot of cost optimization.

In addition, with the ability to accomplish most of the important day-to-day operational tasks automatically, we have gotten rid of manual tasks and require less human effort. On a daily basis, without NCI, the team was utilizing three to four hours on those day-to-day operations, handling the applications and platforms that were hosted on-premises. With those things hosted in Cloud Infrastructure, they need just 60 minutes. So we have saved about 75 percent of that time.

Overall, the primary benefits are that it simplifies operations and we have less human error with more automation. And there are robust security features, integrated with third-party security and monitoring tools. With the help of a complete and robust platform, we are going to achieve the best product.

Before Nutanix, our customers were using VMware with external storage from HPE, IBM, and others. They have been able to consolidate all the external data in the Nutanix clusters. That has reduced their server footprint as well as power consumption, which is important for the environment.

Nutanix has a very rich feature set and product solutions that are good for our customers. Instead of using different types of solutions, Nutanix covers all of them. That is a very big advantage. Often, to get the best feature sets, you need a lot of vendors, each one having different products. Vendor management, in that case, is difficult. But with Nutanix, everything comes from the same vendor, making vendor management easy.

The number of servers we need has been reduced with NCI's performance, and it reduces the space we need and provides energy savings on top of that. The major benefit is the consolidation of all the physical and VMware servers into the Nutanix AHV platform. That's the baseline of the entire application, the core platform. We no longer use our old HPE and Dell servers. The three-tier architecture has been eliminated. NCI has eliminated that complexity and the costs associated with it.

We were content with the previous solution, which was NetApp Storage and Dell Blade-Servers for compute. We did not miss a thing besides the performance. Now, after three years in production, we would not go back to that solution.

Nutanix gives us fewer headaches with managing and other administrative operations. Having a single-vendor-solution is much more straightforward. We don't have to deal with VMware because it simply is not necessary, besides setting up new GPU-machines.

Creation of VMs can be done with Prism Element, the web management for each Nutanix Cluster. Nutanix also covers any problems we have with the ESXi software.

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure is very cost-effective and reliable. We get notified if there is any issue in a snapshot or replication.

NCI definitely helped improve our organization's security posture. We have used many solutions from a security perspective, like the Nutanix Flow, micro-segmentation, and snapshot that we have over the Nutanix site to help us recover and protect our VMs from any attacks. Having the snapshots and having the flow on-prem helps us to know the flow between the VMs and the nodes. It gives us the visibility to see if any unusual things happen within it.

NCI helped our organization save time and cost. We don't need to spend time and focus on things that Nutanix is doing for us. We got the DR up and running for the cost of a point-to-point connection between our on-prem and existing DR. So it's a massive saving of time and cost.

We used to have one person dedicated to ensuring that snapshots and replication were happening on a daily basis. Nowadays, we get notified proactively by Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure if something is not working well, and my staff gets time to work on other projects or tasks.

The DR solution in Nutanix has helped us reduce downtime. There are periods of downtime, intentional as well as unintentional, but because we have another site already replicated, our downtime is minimal. The protection policies have the greatest impact in reducing downtime because they help us replicate our data. We're able to do synchronous replication to the remote site and that keeps our machine ready there in case of the need for DR. We just go there and manually power it on.

Nutanix has also helped us free up IT staff. Since I joined this company, I have been the only one managing the solution. Prior to that, there were multiple people involved. The more we move toward Nutanix from vCenter, the more we reduce the number of resources needed. We have freed up almost half of the time we used to need.

We are not fully in production yet and we are still busy testing Nutanix. A couple of things that it makes a huge difference in is our company's power consumption because we don't have to use computers for all our employees. We can simply put down a Raspberry Pi or a little nook, and in the Inuvika environment, everything is up and running immediately. It gives the users a lot more freedom in connection with what they usually have in a standard setup. With everything operating in the cluster, the chances of losing data is reduced by about 90%. We use this move from one site because we've got about seven sites that we are running from the one Nutanix cluster.
We can move a user from one site to another site without having to move hardware. It is very user-friendly. Another thing I like a lot about Inuvika is the deduplication that you can do on different containers. You don't have to do everything on one container or on one VM itself.

Our company was in a high growth period, tripling in size within 30 months. Our demand was outstripping our ability to provide additional capacity.

With traditional converged infrastructure (Vblock), the length of our acquisition cycle (analyze, predict, design, justify, procure, manufacture, deliver, install, configure, and provision) was in excess of six months.

We were able to respond to demand more quickly and with less hysteria with Nutanix.

When I left the company, we had decided to use Nutanix to build out our non-production development environment and use the Vblocks only for production and bare metal.

We've had customers that are mid-market, and they have one person for deploying, running, managing, reporting, updating, and upgrading. When you look at the total cost of ownership and you look at what it takes to run that environment, you're simplifying how you manage your environment, which reduces the number of people you need to look after your infrastructure. So, you can put those people into more productive areas.

For us, the Nutanix 3060 was a fantastic solution because it was an exact fit for the purpose of refreshing our hypervisor (VMware) infrastructure. For example, our existing VMware licensing allowed for a total of 8 sockets, which fit perfectly since the 3060 consists of (4) nodes with (2) sockets each. Our fiscal planning called for the replacement of two of our hypervisor hosts and an HP P2000 G3 SAN however, we were able to justify a Nutanix 3060 appliance due to the hyper-converged features. We also went from a 1G iSCSI storage network to 10G and we didn't need to purchase a 10G switch for the storage traffic since we connected the 10G nics in the Nutanix nodes directly to our end-of-rack switches. The simplification, cost-savings, and across the board performance increase made the Nutanix a great decision.

From an operator's perspective, we released from two to one person managing it, and pretty much the main benefit is the ease of use, ease of install, and ease of protecting, et cetera.

From a grander view, it's allowed our customers to actually reduce the amount of software that they have to purchase. Not only do they have to purchase the hypervisor, and if they're in VMware, in most cases, they're purchasing disaster recovery tools and a whole bunch of other things. However, Nutanix has it all built-in so that users have one area to manage and maintain.

Our current production solution is complicated and requires many different management consoles to configure and monitor the solution. Inevitably, something gets missed and requires us troubleshoot resources. The Nutanix PoC appears to eliminate some of this confusion. The AHV integrates with the solution and most of the complexity is hidden from the admin's duties.

The Nutanix clustering provided by AOS has ensured more uptime and speed of delivering existing applications. AOS also offers fantastic ease of expanding our infrastructure. Initially, Nutanix was our VDI Backend solution, then we started migrating all virtual server infrastructure over to an entire Nutanix solution as well. Since then we have been expanding on both and providing end-users an amazing experience.

Now, all of the systems run on the same hardware with the same software, which can be managed from a single pane of glass. All you need to know is AOS. You don't need to learn about storage, SAN, or virtualization. It's easier to start with Nutanix than start with classic architecture.

The software features which really can improve the organization are deduplication and compression. These really can help to save a lot of space. On the non-homogenous systems, we achieved approximately 2:1 space savings, which is great.

We can troubleshoot customer issues (e.g. crashes, performance issues etc.) very quickly and efficiently since we know exactly how the infrastructure should behave and what performance values are to be expected.

Nutanix delivers full visibility down to a single virtual disk (e.g. a VMDK file) and every single hardware component. Predefined health checks are executed during a support case which will in most cases already narrow down the root cause considerably if not point it out directly.

Most of our customers actually don’t manage their Nutanix environment at all since common tasks such as LUN provisioning, zoning, permission settings etc. don’t apply any longer.

The biggest change we had was the time it took for our IT team to perform all the tasks of administering and automating the environment. Although everything worked before, with Nutanix, things work even better, almost without administration, since it is a software that allows you to analyze down to the last detail. Tasks that were previously performed manually can be automated.

On the other hand, our development team can consume its customized resources from our datacenter without our intervention, and the Acropolis integrations via API with other environments turn the software into a complete and flexible solution.

We deployed Nutanix three years ago and now we see all benefits of AOS. It doesn't require a lot of engineers for managing the virtualization environment. We see a nice reduction of using storage resources. AOS can run any workloads such as business-critical DBs. Also, AOS provides great features for backup and DR.

AOS optimizes capacity utilization without hurting performance or resiliency by dynamically compressing, deduplicating, and erasure coding blocks of data based on potential capacity savings as well as application access patterns.

Building a beautiful, empathetic and intuitive product is core to the Nutanix platform and something we take very seriously.

We use Nutanix Acropolis to look after the cluster, the migration, etc. and run the data center. We have around 300 users here using it.

We deployed a basic setup, then afterward one-by-one, we re-migrated the servers.

Only four people are needed to deploy Nutanix Acropolis and maintain it. I'm the main keeper for maintaining the original deployment and everything I must do.

At a cost level, it compared well with the other vendors. Nutanix is very costly compared to others, even HP but, it works very well.

We recommend Nutanix to the management because of scalability and time efficiency. These advantages aim at the next level of relationship for our current management, then we'll decide on future deployments.

Nutanix Acropolis allows us to manage our company with a smaller team of IT technicians. It doubles the number of servers that we manage without having to increase the number of IT personnel managing it. It allows us to build more with less. This would be a great example of why we use Nutanix.

Also, every time we have a new stack or when we need to expand the cluster, it is no hassle. It takes less than five minutes. When we have to upgrade, everything runs automatically, so my team can basically just start an upgrade, go and have a coffee, and three hours later come back to see that everything is finished and upgraded automatically.

We use Nutanix hardware, so we have a single vendor and a single stack for everything, which makes the life cycle management very simple and very forward.

If it was a three-tiered architecture, we would have to struggle with the HBA cards from the upgrade, storage area, networks, switches, and other hardware. The beauty of this product is that it is very intelligent in controlling the data set and metadata. It fully utilizes the memory, hard disk, and CPU, and leverage big data components such as a Cassandra database as a metadata database to hold each of the nodes for a redundancy issue if there's a node or disk failure.

Each of the applications can perform data access in read and write locally, and also distribute a second copy of data to other hosts in real time, which ensures data will not be lost if there is a hard disk failure, and this avoids storage I/O bottleneck issues.
