Oracle Data Guard Valuable Features

There are various advantages. First of all, easy to deploy. The only difficult part is the cost factor, licensing. In other ways, the implementation is very, very important.

Like, we have not encountered any major challenges with replication. We were able to achieve near-real-time replication. Also, with the switchover failover, we were not getting any technical issues. It's a pretty stable product.

Once you configure it, it goes through the rollback, and then Data Guard introduces this snapshot thing. So once the restoration happens, we can go back to the original thing, and we make that a standard.

It's a pretty decent and key function for Oracle. So, enterprise organizations go for Oracle only for features like these.

The most valuable thing about Oracle Data Guard is the active data guard feature, which allows us to have an active site rather than just a standby one. This is particularly handy during failover situations, keeping things running smoothly and reducing downtime.

Snapshot and Data Guard Manager are awesome features. Switchover and failover during disasters are also good. Oracle improves its products’ availability. It increases the number of features with each release and update. The product can be integrated with different platforms, but the platform must be homogenous.

The most valuable aspect for me is undoubtedly the failover capability and the assurance of data safety provided by Oracle Data Guard.

The most valuable feature is the application or promotional code used in the production protocol to transfer data to the secondary database, situated on the DR site.

The most important feature is that if I want to test the database at the disaster recovery site, I can take a snapshot, test it, and then revert it back to the original state without needing to restore the complete database from the primary data center to the disaster recovery.

It is excellent as a data guard broker. You can see how the logs are applied, check the apply time, and how far behind the standby is at any given time. It can help you make sure all the parameters are set up correctly, much easier to switch over to the standby side and back to production without data loss. Also, you can put into snapshots a clone to do a quasi-DR test to make sure standby is set up with the application and everyone can connect. The app performs as expected before a DR happens.

Running reports and scripts from the standby side to tune in advance.

Oracle Data Guard has a nice feature called the DataGuard snapshot to open the solution in the read-write mode and make some changes to the database. When you finish your work, you can do a rollback to the point that you started the snapshot and continue working.

If you have a problem with your primary site and can't access your primary database, you can continue working with the database that you have as standby on the other site, by changing its role to primary.

Another valuable feature is the possibility of backing up the database from the standby database instead of the primary database, to avoid backup process overhead in the primary system.

Active Data Guard is other feature with advanced capabilities that extend basic Data Guard functionality. Some of the functions of Active Data Guard are:

  • Real Time Query - Offloads read-only workloads to an up-to-date standby database
  • Automatic Block Repair - Automatically detects a block corruption and repairs it.

The Active Data Guard and Fast-Start Failover features are excellent. The Active Data Guard helps in providing read only data for reporting purposes. The Fast-Start Failover is an automatic feature that allows failover from primary database instance/server to the preferred standby instance/server.

The most valuable features are the backup and restore. With this in place along with the clustering, the database is safe from hacking, hardware failure, power failures, and system crashes.

If anything were to happen you can immediately recall your data and bring your production server back to business.

It's flexible and easy to maintain because you are configuring your primary database and a standby database in one or more locations.

I'm constantly looking for the best solution for protecting my data in data filters, and most are powerless in terms of protecting our Oracle database. The Oracle Replication Solutions and Oracle Data Guard are the best in this area, however. The stability and resiliency are closely monitored, and you cannot find the same protection solution outside of Data Guard or Oracle RAC for protecting your data.

It's a very good solution if you want to protect your data across two data centers, or you have a middle man or many administrators who use these solutions for protecting their data. It's very reliable compared to other solutions that are most often not storage-based.

I have found its switchover functionality to be most useful using which you can perform disaster recovery within no time. Its feature of FAL is also pretty useful that helps to keep both sites (primary and standby) synchronized. Logical standby database is also a pretty handy feature for reporting purposes.
