Oracle E-Business Suite Previous Solutions

At my previous company, we used both Oracle and SAP. While SAP is known for manufacturing, the decision to choose Oracle was driven by the superior financial capabilities, especially in EBS, and the robustness of Oracle, being a true cloud solution. Unlike SAP, Oracle's approach to the cloud is more native, offering a distinct advantage.

We were using different solutions in silos. For example, there was one for inventory called Maximo and another for finance. All those systems were in silos, so we wanted to replace them with a single ERP system that offers a 360-degree view of data and precise reporting without the need to change many things in the data.

We wanted to avoid many manipulations by manual editing errors. Having everything in one system gives you complete native automation built into the system.

My company previously used a different tool, and the reason for the switch to Oracle E-Business Suite is that the instance shifted from Hong Kong to India, so it was a greenfield implementation. The pricing was good. Licensing was also good. The offering which included cloud services was also attractive because Oracle became a one-stop service provider with Oracle E-Business Suite combined with Oracle Cloud. The integration of various packages also seemed to be okay.

SAP, on the other hand, was facing a lot of issues in terms of Ariba Integration with S/4HANA, and it was a mash-up of on-premise products and subscription-based products, while most of the Oracle modules were on-premise solutions and tightly integrated, so that has been helpful.

Oracle E-Business Suite is a complete business suite, while SQL Server is only a database. All customized applications in front-end development use SQL. If they have a high budget, they use Oracle.

We have over 200 customers and use a variety of solutions on Azure, including SQL Server and Oracle E-Business Suite. We primarily provide technical support for our customers.

My customers and my ex-companies have used several custom and packaged applications before switching to EBS. They were using different application for different purposes. The applications they were using weren't modular..

The decision for switching to EBS was to have a centralized software system for bringing all the required functionalities and applications together. For one of my customer, the decision was made by head quarters which was located in another country. It was a big, global holding company and the head quarters decided to use the same software for all the companies under its control.

They did a great job of taking the best features from PeopleSoft, Siebel, and other Oracle products to create Fusion. It has a lot of features, although I find that clients don't use it to 100% capacity. I see some clients buy the license but they can't use it because they don't know how to.

Well APEX is a kind of a funny product in the Oracle space. Number one it's a no cost feature of the database. It doesn't get a lot of attention from the Oracle sales people. That's a fair comment, there's no commission for it. Therefore it's kind of like a hidden thing inside the database and a lot of people at organizations that have Oracle and very good Oracle people actually don't know it exists. That's part of what we do is we try to raise the awareness of APEX in the Oracle space. One of the big features of Oracle is if you want to do some customization and make a web application on top of an Oracle database it needs to be considered because it is a world class tool right now. Scales beautifully, it's got in their mid-tier the ORDS product, the Oracle Rest Data Services, mid-tier portion which is very light and small that has restful services which opens up the entire world to an APEX application. It can touch any database that has rest services exposed and it can go on to the cloud and if you want your list of Amazon books or go to Netflix, all of that stuff is easily available through that ORDS technology.

The previous solution wasn't our system, so we had to do something else. At prior companies, our executive management and some of the leadership team had experience with Oracle and always had good success. We did a lot of homework and research. There was interest in considering at least one of the manufacturing ERP systems, and we did give that solution a consideration. But from a pure finance, non-manufacturing perspective, Oracle was the way for us to go.

Oracle Analytics is totally different from Oracle E-Business Suite because one of them is a reporting tool and the other one is just a generation tool. One of them has a sequence where you enter operational and transactional data using a sequence or integrations, et cetera. You collect data with Oracle E-Business Suite. And you use Oracle Analytics to repost them. So they are two different products.

Oracle Cloud is nice. With on-premise products, people usually emphasize the setup time. The main difference between cloud and on-premise products is you don't have to provide service and you don't have to scale your service according to your needs. When it's on the cloud, it's easy to scale.

Also, the cloud version of Oracle has new functionalities available. Oracle made an investment with the cloud version and they implemented customer needs and customer requests surrounding features that would benefit them — on the cloud, not on-premise.

So the cloud product is highly functional compared to the on-premise version. That's the main difference between the cloud and the on-premise solution.

Principal - OATC "Oracle Applications and Technology Consulting" at OATC, Inc.

I think investing into, or even investigating into the products, typically, some organizations might buy the E-Business Suite, they own more product than they realize. If they buy 100% of the product, they're only using maybe 20% of the functionality. It's taking advantage of that other 80% and implementing those features and functionality into their business, that's a return on investment that some organizations don't take, for various reasons. They don't know they have a product, and perhaps they start investigating their maintenance agreement, and they find that they own something, and now they want to implement that.

Looking at some organizations, they have some folks that are dedicated to looking at new technology, it's constantly looking out to see what can be applied to the business. Some organizations don't do that; they don't have the time or resources to do that. Organizations that do, you look at them, they're fairly progressive. It's trying to, at least, maybe identify someone that can help, I'll say, support the investment that they've made into the organization. You have companies that are investing millions and millions of dollars into these products, and really only taking advantage of a very small footprint of their total ownership of the product.

For one thing, there are not many things available out there. Oracle bought them all, basically. Oracle is basically a local company for us. It's pretty easy to use, so that was another one of the reasons. Also, at the time, my company was trying to go IPO. They couldn’t really claim all the financials from the spreadsheets. You have to have some kind of ERP system, so Oracle was one of the options.

We didn't have a consolidated ERP system, so that's why we migrated to Oracle ERP. We had several small applications working together; the integration is really a challenge.

When we select working with a vendor such as Oracle, we like to choose the industry leader, because the company will be there for a long time. They have the reputation, they have the knowledge, they have the full suite. With some companies, one part of the product is very good, but they don't have the whole solution. We want a one-stop shop to solve all of our problems.
