Oracle OBIEE Benefits

One of its main features, which is a feature in pretty much every enterprise product these days, is the ability to see a single source of truth (SSOT). It means that of all the different pieces of information in today's contemporary enterprise, you can identify one set of financials, one set of production data, one set of sales, and one set of marketing data, and you can call that the truth or the gold standard. Everybody who accesses the application can refer to the same truth. This is a major benefit of not only OBIEE but many other products, but OBIEE has been doing that for a long time. Being able to access multiple data sources, being able to pull them all together, and being able to establish the same information that everybody can refer to are some of its benefits.

With a good model implemented, businesses can easily take decisions to improve anything they want.

An example I like to give is a retail company for which we developed online BI for sales. With this model, the managers follow the sales in real-time and can make decision like when, how much, and where to start a sales campaign during the day. This helps all managers to fulfill their quotas easily.

For advanced users, they can build their own custom reports. You can actually create a custom dashboard for your upper management, and for your middle management. You can provide required reports at all levels of management for decision making. You can get data from different systems into it. It works well with other products, where you can bring in data, and then project it. It's got a very good ETL process, which makes it easy for you to bring in data.

It is beneficial for us because most of our reports are on OBIEE. It's not only for data analysis. We use it for corporate year-end financial purposes as well. We use it for the backlog management, for example, to check how much is the backlog or how much is the shipment amount and for similar kind of data. We are using OBIEE for such purposes.

We are into the Oracle Supply Chain which involves the process from auto-booking to shipment. They bring the data from Oracle apps to Oracle Arch Work. There is a middle layer which is called ODS. From ODS, they put the data in the OBIEE product. From there, the IT teams create all the attributes, we bag them there and in this way, we can generate our own reports. That is how we have been using this product.

It is useful for us especially for the quarter-end data analysis or to improve any metrics; in this way, we use OBIEE for data analysis purpose.

Taking top five features in mind:

  1. Build adhoc reports (drag & drop) - our team and stakeholders build analysis everyday to find different ways to slice and dice the data to better analyze the business and produce actionable insight
  2. Schedule set cadence reports - very heavily used feature across organization
  3. Visualization and Dashboards (basic & advanced OBIEE offers both) - even executive dashboards are built using OBIEE given the flexibility of the tool
  4. Offline data availability - used while traveling with peace of mind without having to worry about internet connection to stay connected with the data
  5. Customization - we customized the tool to standardize to the corporate color pallet and to stay consistent.

These reports are used all day by the company’s sales representatives as they travel between regional outlets, customers and suppliers. Having access to this data quickly via a tablet/mobile phone meant spending less time at a desk and could ensure that they have up-to-date information during their meetings. It has therefore greatly increased the time the sales reps can spend out on the road and positively impacted on the deals they are making. Their managers can also monitor during the day what the sales reps are up to and provide better guidance.

Once fully used, the Visual Analyzer has great promise. However, you're allowing end users to upload spreadsheets that can mash with your existing data. This is a great idea (Tableau attack on Oracle's part), but it can be dangerous if the end-user data is wrong. In that case, the great report will be wrong. It still needs a data manager's blessing to check it, IMO.
