Oracle OBIEE Initial Setup

Yossi Belitasky - PeerSpot reviewer
BI manager at Clarivate Analytics

The solution's initial setup was straightforward.

The deployment process for the solution takes time since we have many users. But because we have been doing it for a while, we're getting to more and more users while improving our learning curve. Basically, the deployment process is not that complicated.

We're doing fine with the deployment process even though it takes time for us to train its users to give them the ability to understand what they're doing, what to do and how to do certain things on the solution.

For the deployment and maintenance of the solution, we have about six to seven people, consisting of engineers and developers, in our organization.

Setting up Oracle OBIEE can be challenging due to the complexity of installation and maintenance tasks, such as managing multiple product tables and configurations. Debugging issues and upgrades also require SME knowledge and can be time-consuming. Maintenance tasks are simpler, and upgrades are typically smoother.

The initial deployment of Oracle OBIEE can take some time due to the need to configure the setup and manage multiple developers working on the same file. However, its multi-user development concept allows for collaborative work and submission of changes, albeit with some integration and deployment complexities.

I rate the product's initial setup phase a five on a scale of one to ten, where one is a difficult setup process, and ten is an easy setup process. If you talk about Oracle Cloud Analytics, I rate the product's initial setup phase a seven or eight out of ten.

The solution is deployed on the cloud. I have used OAC in the past, but for my current project, I use Microsoft Azure. Within two or three months, I will be back to using OAC.

Oracle OBIEE's configuration settings and deployment areas are much more difficult than those of products like OAC and Power BI.

In my opinion, Ooracle has better documentation for installation, however, in our case, migration is a difficult challenge which involves lots of arrangements and importing and exporting of large amount of data. Even though I am not a technical person, I believe that upgrading on-premises requires creating a new installation, while on the cloud, it's simpler. I'm not exactly sure about the process, but these are the discussions I've had with my team.

The time for the setup phase of the solution depends on the client and how big the project is, along with another factor, which is the partner who will be a part of the implementation phase of the product.

The solution is deployed on a hybrid cloud.

For a customized deployment for Oracle OBIEE, the end user has to let me take care of reporting instead of the user adding custom dimensions and fact tables in the data grid level or business model. The deployment process is a replication. It's more of a repetition of processes.

I'm a developer, so I don't feel much complexity in the solution's initial setup. So, I will have to step into a user's shoes to see what complexity is involved in the setup phase. I think that there are three areas, in which one area is to connect to the database and create your own use and then drag that view into a middle layer. The middle layer is the data modeling layer, where you join different tables, and regarding such technicalities, if I look at them from a user perspective, it's a little difficult for them, which I think is solved with visualization by dragging, dropping and visualizing how the data looks and all that stuff. So Oracle OBIEE has tried its best to make the solution easier for users. Even though I try to look at the user's perspective, my mindset is that of a developer, so it is easy for me. I think Oracle OBIEE is doing a good job.

OBIEE's overall setup is really complex because it relies on Oracle Forms, the Oracle Fusion technology, which requires a middleware.

We require both the front-end and the back-end. It was really difficult to manage the entire setup. Dealing with OBIEE was tough in some circumstances when we had to make infrastructure-related modifications.

The entire setup is extremely complex, and troubleshooting any errors is incredibly difficult due to the large number of logs generated by the WebLogic Server.

Setup is really difficult, which is an area where they are lacking.

If you only consider Tableau, Qlik Sense, or Power BI, where you will simply download the software, all you have to do is apply it if you have an enterprise license. It's incredibly simple to install and configure these products. It's very easy compared to OBIEE.

In other words, for the setup, BOMs, scaling ups and other supporting requirements, you need to have proper domain expertise and product knowledge individuals for carrying out the setup properly. Otherwise, you will not get the proper output. It is very resource intensive. If you get the wrong output, then all your assumptions and forecasts goes wrong; so it's very sensitive.

The setup is quite straightforward, unless you need to deploy with a cluster. Components in a model/presentation layer can do it simply by dragging and dropping, if all the calculations are done in the database. Although, some settings, such as "Write Back", is not that easy. I wasn not involved in the initial setup. When I joined the organization, it was already set up. I would say that we're using only 20 to 25 percent of the features of OBI.

Setup and migration are very complex. Technically, Oracle accessory is extremely complex. These days, the industry demands a kind of Excel analysis, which is very easy to install, set up, and it's very developer-friendly as well as end-user friendly. OBIEE lacks all those features. We had to migrate from 11g to 12c and it took around six months because of the extreme complexity of the tool.

The initial installation and configuration was relatively straightforward. Installing the software is a little complex for someone doing it for the first time; there are quite a few steps, but it was just a case of slowly working through them.

The big boon for this client was that they already had a data warehouse containing the data required for reporting; it was currently being assembled by an overnight process and then manually downloaded into Excel. OBIEE was able to directly connect to this warehouse and access the table/view objects within. The client was quickly able to start producing some of the simpler reports.

It's a pity that they are moving from on-premises in a lot of ways. There are two changes in the cloud site because they have introduced a few new steps to configure OBIEE in the cloud. There are pretty easy steps to configure OBIEE in the cloud. As a service-oriented company, we are only using their interface.

Every technology now has been shifted to Cloud. Every technology now has been introduced to the cloud instance. If you're talking about Microsoft, they have also introduced Azure cloud as well as Amazon and Oracle clouds. However, now they want to shift their Oracle technology to only cloud and in the future, we are seeing that most of the companies will shift their data to the cloud.

I was involved in the setup of both the cloud and on-premises versions of Oracle OBIEE.

The basic difference between on-premise and cloud is the fact that we as implementers are responsible for the entire picture. We have to build and install the server then handle the installation configuration and then move the data from the source application tool to the warehouse. That's only for on-premise whereby the whole responsibility is taken by us.

The cloud, the infrastructure service, means that the responsibility is taken by Oracle. The cloud handles the technical aspects for the most part. We are only using to the warehouse because the source application moves the target in-house. The on-premise solution has three basic processes: infrastructure, installation, and configuration and then we do the implementation. In the cloud, you mostly just have to implement it.

Since we're a 24/7 manufacturing company, there's a lot of data that wasn't there that we've had to slowly bring in. We're still fighting through a lot of it, and since it's not a priority service, it's kind of a secondary function. Initial setup was relatively average in terms of difficulty. We had an Oracle consultant come in and help us. It ended up being pretty quick, and the consultant was good. We had it stood up in six months.

We first used Oracle 10, then Oracle 11, and afterwards moving to 11.3 until we got to Oracle 12. The initial setup was not complex. Although, in the past, when we had to upgrade, we had to install another version, and move the reporting to it. Now, we can do an in-place update. So, it is not so complicated.
