Oracle WebLogic Server Room for Improvement

They should improve the solution's garbage collection feature. Most frequently, it runs out of memory processes. Also, sometimes the solution gets slow due to the same. It needs to release the memory more effectively. At the moment, we have to restart the solution to release the memory. Also, the performance could be quicker to avoid getting stuck.

Identifying threats, especially when using Oracle WebLogic with connection pooling on an Oracle database, can be somewhat confusing. Having clearer mechanisms to directly map a database-level connection problem to the corresponding WebLogic thread would greatly enhance the administrator's convenience.

The pricing is a little bit higher compared to other products. It can be a problem for smaller companies that cannot afford the license for the WebLogic product. Pricing is always a little bit higher for every similar product.

Oracle WebLogic Server's configuration could be improved because we need to do multiple configurations when setting up anything. A UI-based wizard may help in the product's configuration. We used to go into the direct folder structure and look for specific config files to make changes.

Performance tuning-related parameters should be added in the next release of Oracle WebLogic Server. Backend server additions and load-balancing features should also be included in the next release.

The error handling area in Oracle WebLogic Server is an area of concern where improvements are required. The ability of the product to show the appropriate or correct error in the front-end application is an area where improvements are required. In Oracle WebLogic Server, whenever there is an error, my company has to check for the logs at the back-end, so it would be better if the errors were displayed in the front-end application.

In terms of what could be improved, maybe something related to the processes automation or starting and stopping the processes, because often WebLogic comes with something called Node Manager. Node Manager needs to be configured and administrated manually. That is kind of a setback because we don't how to configure it manually using scripting commands - it becomes complicated. In the next releases it would be good if it could be possible to have Node Manager WebLogic able to be configured and administrated graphically, also. That's a suggestion.

It is not easy maintenance and has some performance issues. Let's say you have a log file filled with information, and you put your tool in trace mode. It's not easy to diagnose or identify the root cause of the problem. It requires lots of experience and a lot of patience and time to delve into such deep-seated issues. You need a lot of time and a precise location to address the problem effectively because you have to read a lot and a lot of log files because there is no diagnostic tool available that is good enough to take you in the right direction.

In additional features, I would like to see diagnostic tools.

There's a bug related to the managed services, particularly when dealing with a substantial database load applied to the managed servers. They tend to crash under such circumstances. To address this, there needs to be a focus on configuring the managed servers to handle new configurations or accept a higher load. These are some aspects that need to change. Otherwise, it's a good product.

We have some pain points with the product. First of all, we know that the Oracle-related WebLogic updates tend to be a little volatile. That is in regards to their regular updates. They do quarterly security patch updates.

People do the updates and over a period and for some of them the updates lead to the product becoming unstable. The updates do not always apply correctly. If there is something that is a little bit off — say, if a customer has installed an extra piece of software or something to modify the system — this can create issues. There are a lot of reasons that can cause WebLogic updates to end up making the whole system unstable.

Having to do with that update issue, we would like to see Oracle add the Diagnostic Pack back in. They used to have it included with the product and it was removed. There is another piece that was also useful in helping with product analysis and stability that they took out after 10g. Right now these helpful modules are just add-ons. Really they should be part of the standard package.

We have got a couple of other smaller problems, but right now our main problem is the Oracle CPU updates. They are timely, but primal as far as installations.

Pricing for Oracle WebLogic Server and other Oracle products has room for improvement because the pricing model isn't easy to understand.

I'd like to see lower pricing from Oracle WebLogic Server. That's the main issue with the solution.

The one thing I really miss is the possibility to define a metric extension (on Enterprise Manager) that uses a custom WLST script on a managed server target.

Oracle WebLogic Server is not fully integrated with Oracle Enterprise Manager. Most of the operations are available from Enterprise Manager, but you still need the WebLogic Administration Console as a graphical interface.

Oracle Weblogic Server has its own web interface (Administration Console) to monitor/change the configuration of a weblogic domain.

Not all the operations can be done using Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, but, in particular, I would like to create metric extensions using wlst scripts to implement custom metrics.

I'd like to have a lighter version for micro-service architecture. In my experience, it can sometimes take 15-30 minutes just to start the server if we deploy a lot of applications. I think this may be in the latest version, although I'm not sure.

We have had some problems with cluster solutions when working with a WebLogic domain. It may be because the error codes and error information is poor.

Although WebLogic is fully supported with different Linux distributions and most installations run on Linux machines, on a clean installation there are no startup or service scripts, requiring time investment and perhaps external help for a robust set up.

We are satisfied with the current functionality, but I am concerned about the future of Java E8 and 9. Also the server, the EJB and the RMI, OOP and maybe a T3 protocol in the WebLogic server and the next Java E specifications. The financial systems are increasingly in our company now using RMI over OOP protocols, so we need more support for the future efforts with OOP.
