We used the free version of ESXi, however, it didn't have very many features that we needed.

We used to other products also. However, this product is better actually. In terms of display metrics, et cetera, the infrastructure, and geo-mapping as well as developing the dashboard and all the additional features have been good.

We did previously work with Citrix. We moved to this solution for a better user interface and stability. Citrix also changed the way it handled licensing. We preferred Proxmox’s licensing approach.

Before Proxmox VE, I used VMware. I switched to Proxmox VE because I love Linux. I can install online logs and automate some stuff on Proxmox VE. Also, people recommended I use Proxmox VE.

We did use a different solution prior to Proxmox VE, and that would be VMware. At this point, we have been able to migrate from VMware completely and we just use Proxmox.

Before I got here, the company was strictly using VMware for this type of solution. I am not really sure if they looked at other solutions. When I got here I did not even know about Proxmox. I just assumed we were a VMware shop. But after I started, someone had discovered Proxmox and I started reading up on it. It was interesting enough that I started using it. As I did, I thought it felt very familiar. I kept testing and as far as I was concerned I could do everything in Proxmox VE that I was doing in VMware.

The initial deployment of Proxmox did not really have all of the same features as VMware, but that was kind of the expected in a newer open-source product. They added the other features very quickly. How much the product is advancing is especially apparent with this latest release where it has got the same failover concerns as VMware does. They are called "high-availability" features.

So now that you can get all the HA (high-availability) features that VMware has, there are not too many major differences between VMware and Proxmox. The only difference is you get it for no cost. It is easy to use, easy to manage, easy to scale, and there are probably going to be a whole lot more and better things coming down the pipe from them. It really has been a great effort on the part of the developers.

Yes, Citrix XEN Server and EMC VMWare Server. I left Citrix for security, there are too many "black box" in the binaries that cannot be audited. In the VMWare case, for licenses politics, it uses a "per socket" schema that punishes high density servers with 2 or 4 sockets .

Is is the tool of choice used in the entire Facebook infra-structure, so it must be "at least" good enough .

I have experience with VMware. We had VMware in our company, which is only for service and not for the VDI part. We did not continue with VMware in our company because it was not an open-source platform. My company mostly prefers to stay on open-source platforms over paid tools.

I was using Hyper-V from VMware, but Microsoft kept crashing. It takes a lot of investment here in Africa. I need to invest a lot in power because master machines crash. Windows and power are not the best of mates. After that, I moved to Huawei Desktop Protocol and Huawei Desktop Cloud. That also had issues with the support and licenses. Then we moved to Proxmox, and it's been working.

Prior to this solution, I used VMware VSphere 5 and 6, but it requires mostly professional (certified) IT equipment. The performance impact of the hypervisor and control panel is very heavy and it requires an independent backup solution. It also does not support Linux containers.

We also use VMware or sometimes Citrix as well. We use a variety of virtual environments and compare them. I use them as learning devices for my students.

If you look at the overall market, VMware is the best in terms of offering and popularity, however, I personally prefer Proxmox and will continue to use it and advocate for it.

I have used previously VMware and VirtualBox. Both are installs that have been on Microsoft Windows, and I found them both to be very limiting, very difficult to set up and manage. Proxmox VE, I found to be the easiest to use, quickest in terms of response, and has the best functionality.
