Helped handle the high cancellation rate in hotel management and slowly rearrange to the normal, pre-crisis level of bookings
Pros and Cons
  • "Unique data visualizations created based on - among others - customer reviews and hands-on experience. Qlik is an experienced company in the Business Intelligence / Data visualization area, that doesn't necessarily mean it is the best solution, however, based on my personal experience it is much more complex than Power BI and Tableau as I've had some things to do with these two concurrent softwares."
  • "Even though a huge set of learning material is available, anyone starting his/her journey on learning the software doesn't even know where to start it. The so-called Continous Classroom service is not cheap, but there are many free tutorials, they are not sorted or enlisted adequately though."

What is our primary use case?

During the COVID-19 crisis, we used our live dataset to be visualized adequately by Qlik Sense and present them to the leadership in order to let them make the best decisions. As it turned out, they had to concentrate more and more on the never-seen-before cancellation rate in the hotel industry, and besides turning the deposit - where it was possible based on the contract - into cash-flow. Even though there were obviously many other factors on the spectrum, which couldn't have been influenced by our decisionmaking, Qlik helped a lot during this uncertain period.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution helped handle the high cancellation rate in the hotel management and slowly rearrange to the normal, pre-crisis level of bookings. Parallel it forced the company to figure out new plans to boost the new reservations, and since the outcomes of these ideas could have been translated into data, we had a chance to measure and visualize them with Qlik Sense, helping us select the best methods in the long term and turn off the ideas that didn't function as well as it was planned before.

What is most valuable?

Unique data visualizations created based on - among others - customer reviews and hands-on experience. Qlik is an experienced company in the Business Intelligence / Data visualization area, that doesn't necessarily mean it is the best solution, however, based on my personal experience it is much more complex than Power BI and Tableau as I've had some things to do with these two concurrent softwares. Even though you need to learn a programming language similar to SQL to bring out the most of it, it's totally worth it.

What needs improvement?

Even though a huge set of learning material is available, anyone starting his/her journey on learning the software doesn't even know where to start it. The so-called Continous Classroom service is not cheap, but there are many free tutorials, they are not sorted or enlisted adequately though.

Moreover, I'd personally be delighted with a hover function over the certain buttons in an app, I'm sure it will soon be a part of the package like many other ideas coming directly from customers and developers.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support could be better, but we don't need to contact them so often.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Tableau and Power BI, I switched companies, not solutions, but I'm personally happy with Qlik Sense due to its complexity compared to the others.

How was the initial setup?

A 3rd party company created the first apps then we learned the programming language by ourselves and based on the created apps.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented with a highly expertised vendor team.

You can build a very nice dashboard and/or report very quickly, even if your data is scattered between different files or even platforms.
Pros and Cons
  • "You can build a very nice dashboard and/or report very quickly."
  • "Qlik has a fast learning curve due to great online training resources (Qlik continuous classroom), but those are lacking the advance features like building extensions and using the API."

What is most valuable?

Rapid Development is the most valuable feature to my humble opinion. You can build a very nice dashboard and/or report very quickly (simple reports can be ready in a matter of minutes!) even if your data is scattered between different files or even platform (excels, DB, etc.)

How has it helped my organization?

1. Managed to aggregate data from several separate legacy and cloud systems into one dashboard to validate expected correlation and insights.

2. Managed to save valuable time to managers by building automated quarterly report, which serve them in the business plan meetings with their reps.

What needs improvement?

1. Qlik Sense (as for ver 3.1) is still missing some key functionality that Qlikview has.

2. Qlik has a fast learning curve due to great online training resources (Qlik continuous classroom), but those are lacking the advance features like building extensions and using the API.

For how long have I used the solution?

QlikView - 2 years

QlikSense - 1 year

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Was not involved in the deployment of the tools.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Not with the Qlik server.

I did found out that our daily backup process fail to backup QVW files from the desktop.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Cannot rate since I hadn't used it yet.

Technical Support:

Technical support is very good due to the large active community.

Most of the technical advise which I implemented came from posts of members in the community.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No, I didn't use any other solution previously.

How was the initial setup?

I was only involved in the setup of the desktop edition tools, and they are straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

Used mixed teams. The vendor employees are very experienced and professionals.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you have users that don't need/want to do self-service analytics (which is the main advantage of Qlik Sense), consider buying less licenses for Qlik Sense and instead by a license for Nprinting tool (also a product of Qlik) which can be used to build and automatically send periodical reports extracted directly from the solution you already developed in QlikView.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No, I wasn't on the team who did the evaluation.

What other advice do I have?

Qlik is using what they call "Associative Model". While this is what give Qlik one of its benefits and for you (the developer/user) the ease of building rapid dashboard and reports, Make sure you truly understand this "Associative Model" before you are stepping into the role of building the data model for the solution.

Modern and intuitive user interface that makes designing dashboards quick to do
Pros and Cons
  • "Qlik Sense has a modern look and feel and a very intuitive UI, so non-technical users find it very user friendly."
  • "The on-demand report generation button in Qlik Sense currently doesn't work if NPrinting requires Okta verification, which our company uses."

What is our primary use case?

I work in the Data Solutions team at Marsh (Insurance company). We build Qlik Sense dashboards for Client Executives in the Specialties team, tailored to their requirements.

The Client Executives can view their client's portfolio over several years and also see how Marsh is performing in the space. These visualizations help them with client and insurer meetings.

Currently, it is being used for new client wins, client retention, negotiating with insurers, providing time efficiencies, and providing consistency in presentations.

How has it helped my organization?

Qlik Sense has a modern look and feel and a very intuitive UI, so non-technical users find it very user friendly.

Our team has been able to deliver some very complex analytics that was possible only due to the powerful back-end functionalities and availability of extensions.

The NPrinting functionality has also been very helpful for us, as it can deliver canned reports. It has saved a lot of hours for our business users.

Dashboards we built on Qlik Sense have helped with new client wins, client retention, negotiating with insurers, providing time efficiencies, and providing consistency in presentations.

What is most valuable?

The time required to build a dashboard is very good, as it only takes a couple of hours to build a basic dashboard. We use this basic dashboard in our Client Executive meetings where we then start the ideation process and consolidate requirements for the final dashboard. We are able to show the Client Executives the art of possible, which helps them understand what can be done.

It has helped us immensely with Data and Digital Literacy. Business users now understand the importance of data and data of good quality!

What needs improvement?

Several things can be improved, including:

  1. Ability to add and customize reference lines (average, linear regression, etc.) on all charts.
  2. There are features of QlikView that have still not come to Qlik Sense. These include "Always one value selected", option buttons, and checkboxes with extended functionalities in the Qlik bundle. I am currently using an external plug-in for this, but its performance is poor.
  3. Legends for charts that are being colored using a formula.
  4. Ease to add company color palette to Qlik Sense dashboard.
  5. The on-demand report generation button in Qlik Sense currently doesn't work if NPrinting requires Okta verification, which our company uses. So, we are not able to deliver this to our business users. This is a very powerful functionality and we want to use it!

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Qlik Sense for more than two years. Prior to that, I have also used QlikView for one year.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

The large number of graphs, tables, and other objects available for data analysis enables users to understand and discover new relationships between the data they are analyzing
Pros and Cons
  • "Obviously and considering that Qlik Sense is a data visualization application, the most attractive feature is the fast handling of large amounts of data and the attractive visualization of the same."

What is our primary use case?

Our organization uses Qlik Sense above all for financial reporting to management, as well as for reporting sales, collections, stock to the commercial department, and payment-purchase reporting for the administration department.

We use ERP SAP Bussiness One for the management of the company, which is why we needed a solution for information extraction due to the limited nature of this application in the reporting area.

The version we currently use is Qlik Sense desktop, April 2020 version, and its implementation began at the end of 2018.

How has it helped my organization?

The most valuable thing for us is the speed in obtaining data and statistics of our business because due to the complexity of our corporate structure, many times we lost too much time in collecting the data. Currently, that time that we previously dedicated to compiling and refining the figures is dedicated to analysis for data-based decision-making. On the other hand, the analysis has improved the information that the organization manages at all levels, not only at the management levels but also at the operational level.

    What is most valuable?

Obviously and considering that Qlik Sense is a data visualization application, the most attractive feature is the fast handling of large amounts of data and the attractive visualization of the same. The large number of graphs, tables, and other objects that Qlik makes available for data analysis enables the advanced user to understand and discover new relationships between the data they are analyzing. Also noteworthy is the fast pace of updating the program, which I hope will continue in the future.

    What needs improvement?

Qlik Sense advertises itself as a more focused solution so that the end-user can carry out their own reporting, in contrast to its other Qlik View application, which would be for a use more directed at IT professionals who launch static reports that are then used by the entire organization. From my point of view, the possibility for end-users to make their own reports in Qlik Sense is limited to very advanced users who have deep knowledge of the application. I think that in this sense the application could be improved much more so that a less advanced user could get more out of it

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Qlik Sense for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    Fantastic.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    Good.

    How was the initial setup?

Yes, which is why a good partner is required.

    What about the implementation team?

Vendor team. Not a good experience.

    What was our ROI?

We will see it in the future, it is still too soon.

A very powerful and useful tool
    Pros and Cons
    • "Qlik Sense is a very powerful and useful tool."
    • "The one thing I would probably try to add is some kind of tutorial since the tool has a lot of options to work with, and for someone who is just starting and does not have any prior experience, it can be a little overwhelming."

I have been using Qlik Sense as a Data Analyst Trainee. At Siemens, I am doing a data academy to fully integrate myself into the data world and way of work, and the main tool that is used, from a visual standpoint, is Qlik Sense. In that context, I have been using this application to develop small dashboards on my own, which are later evaluated by my tutors, so I can learn how to make good and effective dashboards for someone who was no idea what Qlik Sense is, since the client usually only cares if the data is shown in a "pretty way."

I can't say for sure if it has highly improved my organization, since I joined only two months ago, but the overall feel I get from my peers is that Qlik Sense is a very powerful and useful tool, and it is very worth mastering, especially for people like me, who are much more "visual" than "coders."

The one thing I would probably try to add is some kind of tutorial since the tool has a lot of options to work with, and for someone who is just starting and does not have any prior experience, it can be a little overwhelming. Even so, I do believe the "Insights" button is a great addition, not only for beginners but for experienced users as well.

Easy to use with good customer support but on-premises models need better pricing options
    Pros and Cons
    • "The visualizations are good and keep improving."
    • "They need to make security rules to access applications and data security easier and customizable."

What is our primary use case?

I've been an user for many years and also a developer that's working as a consultant. I use Qlik to develop apps to extract, load, and transform data from different sources and then use this data to make apps for different departments in my organization.

I am a consumer of this data as well, as I work for the Controlling Department. We also use NPrinting to send reports to different people in the organization and this saves us a lot of time on manual tasks.

We extract data from: SAP, SQL DB, Excels, Success Factors, Sharepoint, Oracle, and more.

How has it helped my organization?

Qlik Sense is highly used in my organization as it helps our users to derive insights from the data accurately.

The visualization objects in Qlik Sense are really good and interactive and help my users to get an understanding of the whole story behind the data.

Unlike query-based BI tools, the associative model of Qlik Sense has helped them a lot in deriving insights and metrics for the business. Also, it has helped to reduce the time consumed in doing complex reports and sending them to different people.

    What is most valuable?

Qlik Sense has a lot of features that I find valuable.

It's easy to use. As a user, you can learn the basics very quickly and they provide you with free material that makes it easy to learn.

As a developer the tool is easy to learn as well. They keep making improvements to make it easier for users to make their own reports without knowing too much about coding.

You can accurately manage a large volume of data in less time.

Qlik Sense uses an in-memory data model.

It can read a wide range of different sources.

The visualizations are good and keep improving.

The customer support is very good.

    What needs improvement?

I would love to see some improvements in the following areas:

    • They need to make it easy to generate documentation of apps, giving information about legacy.
    • They need to make security rules to access applications and data security easier and customizable.
    • I would love it if they could make a "recycle bin" as users sometimes may delete an app and then cannot recover it unless they have made a backup of the server recently.
    • There needs to be better pricing options for on-premises clients Right now, they are focusing more on SaaS.
    • NPrinting needs more enhancements in its configuration and error handling.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We've never had problems with stability due to the fact that we use an on-premises deployment.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The scalability is very good.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very good and quite fast; they have always provided help when I needed it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a different solution previously.

    How was the initial setup?

It's really easy to install and they make it easier each year.

    What about the implementation team?

In some companies yes, we did get help and they were very capable.

    What was our ROI?

    We have not measured ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'd advise that users always try to have more RAM than they think they will need to make it easier to expand in the future. This also applies for CPU cores.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did look at Power BI.

    Pros and Cons
    • "The data is incredibly easy to share with colleagues."
    • "There is no downside."

What is our primary use case?

We use this product for data visualizations and interpretation. We are having success with identifying opportunities through seeing our weaknesses. In my time coaching the sales team, I had to find a way for everyone to have access the as much information as possible. Qlik made this very easy for us. Giving the sales team access to data empowered them and also provided them with confidence and the resolve to take all the opportunities that were available in the market. I am amazed at how well this worked.

    What is most valuable?

The data is incredibly easy to share with colleagues. This enables us to sit together to identify opportunities. Having the sales team sitting around a table accessing the same data made it very easy for them to work together. In an industry where co-operating is a dirty word, my team relished the opportunity to build a strong team to take on the rest of the industry. They excelled at following up and reminding customers that the opportunity was theirs and not ours. Being able to have your say at the right time really helped pave the way for the team to win.

    What needs improvement?
