Radware Alteon Initial Setup

HJ

Alteon is a hardware-based platform. We have two Alteon 6024s that run in active-active or active-passive modes. Each VX runs seven virtualized load balancers. The deployment process was terrific. Radware's sales engineers took our F5 code and converted everything for us. We built it, installed it, and turned it on.

We had to go back and double-check a few minor things like sessions, retention, etc. Overall, it was a seamless transition from one platform to another. Getting the team trained on the AppWall feature took a few months. Our documentation is excellent, and the support team is great. We learned it quickly.

I deployed Alteon with one other person from my company, but we also had Radware's support team assisting us. We didn't pay for the implementation. They helped us convert the code. Then we did it ourselves with their guidance.

The initial setup was straightforward. The product documentation was the best piece.

We received virtual training from Radware on Alteon and it took about five days for our technical team to become familiar with it. The learning curve is probably one of the biggest benefits. If you're familiar with basic networking, it shouldn't be a big learning curve at all.

And it doesn't require any maintenance other than regular software upgrades as they come out. Compared to a competitor, maintenance with Radware is 50 percent cheaper.

The deployment is private. We have the Alteon equipment onsite in two physical data centers.

The complexity of the deployment depends on how many and what types of services there are, but it was simple because of the accompaniment and support we had from Radware. Radware itself came in and installed the service; they gave us tutorials too, so it was very simple.

You need to consider what your services are and what you are going to exhibit. It is important to have a work plan. We divided our implementation into three days. On the first day, equipment was installed, on the second day it was configured, and the third day was a day of monitoring.

Becoming familiar with Alteon was very easy. We did the training for a week, but we quickly became familiar with the platform. If you're thinking about Alteon but concerned about the learning curve, Alteon is very dynamic and easy to learn. In addition, Radware's team does not leave you alone. Their technical team is always there to support you on any questions you may have.

Soon we will renew our equipment; we have already bought and received it. And we will go through the same process again, installing, configuring, and monitoring on the third day. It is very fast.

There is no maintenance. The platform works pretty well on its own. It has reduced our maintenance overhead by just about 100 percent because we do not have maintenance related to Alteon.

Our deployment model is private cloud and we have Alteon set up in different locations. The initial deployment was simple. The migration was done without affecting our services and the implementation took about 15 days.

As we already had hardware services, we migrated the services to the backup, the main service was installed and, when it was established, the services were migrated and, thus, the backup was also migrated.

The monitoring team simply informs us of the health status of the equipment. If a change is reported in the firmware version, a change that affects us, we do an update. Otherwise, there is not much maintenance. Right now, we only have three people who work with Alteon.

It is a hybrid model. In the first implementation, we did not face many issues. There were some traffic issues related to utilization, but they got resolved. We are now implementing the second one, and we are also going to implement global load balancing. Overall, things are much simpler now. They have improved its simplicity.

Its maintenance includes only firmware upgrades and nothing else. We do not see any maintenance issues.

The setup is relatively straightforward. To do clustering is very easy. It's way easier than F5, I would say.

The deployment was quite fast. The problem was that migrating from F5 took a lot because we had to add the Windows in place and handle the service impact. That said, deploying is fast. If you are in the integration field and you don't have to migrate, it's pretty fast.

How many people you need to maintain the solution depends on the size. However, you might need four or five people.

I wasn't involved in the initial deployment, but I received virtual training from someone at Radware when I started working with this company. A month later, I did the basic Alteon certification. It took me about two months to understand the magnitude of the benefits we have from using the Alteon load balancers.

My colleagues who were here before Alteon told me that it took them five or six months before they received any formal training, and when they received the training, they became more familiar with and had a deeper understanding of the Alteon operating model.

If you are thinking of switching to Alteon but worry about the learning curve, Alteon's management is very simple and intuitive after you acquire a certain level of basic knowledge. The most complex part is the configuration, but that is usually done by the supplier, so I don't think that that would be part of the learning curve. Overall, the platform is easy to learn when it comes to managing it.

The solution doesn't require almost any maintenance on our side. It is not constantly in preventive maintenance, so it has reduced our maintenance overhead. There might be some version update scheduling, but there is not much to do.

The deployment was pretty straightforward.

In terms of maintenance, every year we try to upgrade the code on the Alteon, but that's about it. It has reduced my maintenance overhead. It's a very low-maintenance system.

In terms of the deployment model, it is a private data center, and the cloud provider is AWS.

Its deployment was straightforward. There was no complexity. We received multiple training sessions from the Radware team on configuration, taking backups, etc. We had also used the Alteon product previously for other engagements, so it was not a critical task. It was just a one-day or two-day learning process to get familiar with the environment. We already had the product knowledge.

The initial deployment was pretty straightforward. It took a few weeks and the fine-tuning, as per the customer's requirements, took one or two months.

We have it in one location but in multiple departments. Alteon is sitting in front of the server farm and the users in different departments are accessing these servers. Alteon acts as a security layer before the traffic gets passed to the actual servers.

Maintenance is required, of course, and we have two people involved in that process. But Alteon has helped to reduce our maintenance overhead by about 20 percent.

I rate the initial setup an eight out of ten. It was not straightforward because we needed to set it up. Radware Alteon has a specific syntax requiring navigation of all menus and venues.

Deployment depends on the area and configuration that needs to be applied. With setup experience, deployment of Radware Alteon could be reasonably fast. The initial deployment was done in-house. But now, connecting to a third-party coworker in the data center is easy. We can rack the device in the data center and plug the cables into a laptop that can plug into the Radware Alteon. The user can connect to a smartphone data plan and easily configure the device remotely. We need just two people for maintenance.

The initial setup is not complex. It is easy. You have access on your personal dashboard and you can upload the application. After that, you need to change the DNS settings in order to make a point with the DNS portion of the hardware. It's very easy.

The initial setup took about a week due to the fact that the provider needed to make an area where we could upload the configuration. After that, you have one day to make the configuration in the web application firewall. This is the part that takes a bit of time, however, it is crucial for the upload.

You only really need two to ten people to manage the deployment of the process, although there may be other teams involved. You only need one person to handle maintenance.

It is easy to install. We didn't have any problems. Customers don't know about load balancing products.

If it is LLV or SSLV it can take three to four days. If it's in a single device, it takes around two days.
