Steelhead Scalability
Steelhead is quite scalable. If a customer wants to add another site, like opening a new branch office in a third city, it is a straightforward process. You just need one more box with the necessary license. Setting it up involves creating two rules - one in the existing HQ device and another in the new remote office. This scalability makes it easy to expand the network without significant issues.
None, the licenses were easy to deploy to upgrade and new appliances were just a drop in replacement. We scaled this up from an initial PoC to a fully fledged production appliance without any issues.
View full review »The scalability is not the best. If you find that you have outgrown the capacity of your appliance you are forced to repurchase the license and the appliance with very little discount even if your appliance is still under contract.

Currently what we have in the system can not support the software-defined networks, so I won't say it's scalable. However, newer iterations might be.
We currently have about 2,000 users on the solution.

Not really.

I did not deal much with scaling as the network didn't grow while I was there, but we did have the Riverbed CMC (I believe is the acronym - central management console?) Having this would have made scaling easy, I assume.

The device mostly comes with a standard configuration with no options to upgrade the hardware. This means that we need to go ahead with a new or high end model in case the infra changes happen.
