Salesforce Platform Initial Setup

KrishnaKumar10 - PeerSpot reviewer
Director at Cyient Limited

After considering many instances, I can say that the solution's initial setup is easy. I rate the initial setup of the solution around eight or nine out of ten. The deployment process takes place on the cloud. The deployment process for a small project may take three to six months, while that of a medium-scale project typically takes around nine months on average, and larger implementations can take up to twelve months.

The deployment process includes solution discovery in the initial phases, followed by the build and testing phase. After that, there is the launch phase and post-launch live support.

I would say that the initial setup process was complex. We haven't been able to have all the resources available for this, so we had a Salesforce admin help us. I would say it takes about five or six people to deploy this solution.

We had a large Salesforce deployment in our pharma and medical device organizations. Therefore, we ended up getting enterprise licensing. We ended up having a good set of knowledge. We ultimately used Deloitte to do our development, and Deloitte had some very, very strong capabilities in Salesforce, specifically around case management. That got us going pretty quick. We had a very successful deployment in Salesforce.

From a capability standpoint, Salesforce has really met our needs. It was pretty easy to deploy. We kind of stuck to the basic versions and tried not to customize. We did configurations, however, we tried to stay native for most of Salesforce.

For maintenance, we need around four members. I was not involved in the implementation process. After I did Salesforce admin certification, I came to know that it was really easy to migrate all the data from Hyperionix to Salesforce. The implementation process took approximately three to four months. For deployment, around ten members were required.

Deployment is something that is taken care of by the backend team. However, we have never faced such an issue migrating from a different CRM platform, a home-grown CRM platform to Salesforce.

The initial setup has a moderate level of difficulty. It can be a bit complex. It's not overly easy.

We are going through a CI/CD process using metadata.

We didn't need too many resources involved in the setup. One developer can handle the implementation.

The maintenance is pretty straightforward. Once it is completely set up, there isn't too much to do.

I rate the solution's initial setup a seven out of ten.

The deployment process takes around the day in a normal case scenario.

For deployment, we had two members from the DevOps team who worked with a technical architect. So, overall, three people were involved in the deployment process.

Salesforce is cloud-based, so there's no installation involved. You simply log in using the provided organization login. There's no need for installation.

There are two approaches, managed and unmanaged packages. For maintenance, a team is required because new features need to be developed regularly. Everything is managed within Salesforce itself, including DevOps. The team is needed not just for maintenance but also for feature enhancements.

A customer who is coming to Salesforce for the first time, and doesn't understand CRMS, may need to take time to understand business practices. However, if a person is in IT or software, they usually get it a bit faster. They can handle the complexity.

During implementation, it's best to take baby steps before getting into complex cases. There's a learning curve, however, the level of the learning curve varies from customer to customer.

The amount of time deployment takes depends on the kind of project.

The initial setup was okay because we paid for the configuration using an external partner and we didn't have the internal resources for that. We defined the process and all the designs with the partner in the first week. It then took another month to define the environments and some functionalities. The process took a total of five weeks. We currently have one IT leader who spends about 20% of their time on it and then an admin who spends about 10% of the day making changes and administering. We are going to increase usage in the coming year in the sales team and maybe increase some functionality.

The setup of the Salesforce Platform is complex. You have to be very well-educated; no one can set the Salesforce Platform up on their own. They have to be a trained Salesforce developer in order to set it up and in order to maintain it. It's not something you can do overnight; there is a lot of work involved.

Much of it was straightforward, with the only complex areas being areas that we wanted to customize for items like inquiry routing (our rules were very complex) and analyzing how we wanted to configure the data best to allow us to also report they way we wanted to for operations, executive and historical comparison reporting. Thinking those concepts through was difficult and I'd suggest spending more time on those activities than anything else during design, and test your design concepts early so you can adjust if it turns out your assumptions don't work out the way you thought they would when you see real data being put through the system.
