SAP Cloud Platform Initial Setup

Taiwo Babalola - PeerSpot reviewer
Information Technology Business Partner and Enterprise Architecture Lead at Power International Holding

I have experience with clean-field implementations of SAP Cloud Platform, specifically working with the sales cloud and marketing cloud. The setup process is generally straightforward, especially when following the guidelines provided in the master guide.

We can easily configure the platform to meet specific vertical requirements and ensure data quality while complying with relevant protocols, rules, and regulations. This allows the business to operate smoothly and address complex sections based on our identified business requirements.

The initial setup is pretty straightforward and SAP has got a lot of YouTube videos where they explain how to configure different applications or subaccounts and how to integrate with the backend systems. With a lot of SAP-provided YouTube videos, it’s easy.

We have slowly started deployment. W haven't gone for a big bang approach. Also, we have started using the Business Technology Platform, the SAP cloud applications. We have developed some small applications. Once we are quite familiar with it, then we will migrate the SAP applications from the cloud. We’re going nice and slow.

There is no maintenance needed on our side. It's completely managed by SAP and the deployment of the applications is pretty fast. You have a different environment where you do the development and your production, so you will use the subaccount server. You can do the developments in the development subaccount, then you can transport them to the production subaccount. It's super easy.

The initial setup was straightforward. The only complexity we encountered was in migrating the existing systems. However, when it came to setting up the CPI itself, it was relatively straightforward.

It's not too difficult to maintain. We know what we're getting into from the maintenance perspective. Otherwise, it's not a big challenge.

SAP does the initial setup. So when we start the implementation, they have already done the initial setup. So it's pretty simple. For a user, it is very simple.

The product's initial setup phase is slightly difficult, as it needs a lot of expertise for one to do it in a reasonable amount of time. With SAP Cloud Platform, you may have to install bridges, connectors, and so on, so it's not very easy, making its setup phase seem like it is of medium complexity.

The initial setup is not overly complex or difficult. It’s simple and straightforward.

I’d rate the ease of setup at a four out of five.

The deployment itself was so long ago. I'm not the product owner of that infrastructure. I don't have details with me in regards to how long it took or what steps were involved.

I’m not sure how many staff members we need for maintenance.

It was difficult to set up.

We have some companies using it on-premises, while others are on the cloud. For example, we have SAP Analytics Cloud in the cloud, but the ERP system is on-premises.

The solution was easy to set up. It wasn't overly complex or difficult. I'd rate it at a five out of five in terms of ease of setup. It was very simple.

It took us about two weeks to get everything up and running. We were able to do a demo with the customer as well.

We had two users for the deployment and had maybe three or four people handling any maintenance requirements.

I don't have information on how straightforward or complex the SAP Cloud Platform setup is because the technical staff did it for the company. I'm a developer who builds and deploys applications, and I also manage the SAP Cloud Platform a bit, but I'm not involved in setting it up.

The initial setup was not tough, but it was not easy. We should have a qualified resource to get it done. The person should have knowledge of finance and S/4HANA to collect data from different sources and make it easily available for dashboards.

One consultant is enough to deploy the solution. They would need input from people from finance and other departments. If there is any change in the dashboard, the consultant must handle it. If we are just running simple reports daily, the maintenance is easy. The ease of maintenance depends on the business requirements.

I would say that the initial setup process was not straightforward and was not complex, but rather something in between. I would say that this process took around one month. The issue with the setup is that in the beginning, it was difficult to understand and learn how every dependent works with other products and sub-products.

In comparison to other SAP offerings, the solution is quite simple. There is no technical installation so you just consume it readily. However, the business configuration can take up to a year depending on a company's complexity. In our case, it took seven months.

In terms of maintenance, the work is done by SAP, so it's a real low-maintenance solution for clients. For the responsibilities that the customer has to perform on their side, however, they might need one person.

The initial setup was pretty simple. I’d rate it four out of five in terms of ease of deployment. It’s very user-friendly, which makes it straightforward.

I don’t directly work on the implementation. I work in presales developing the architecture.

How many people you need to deploy and maintain the solution depends on the landscape. It varies.

The initial setup is very simple because everything is there in the public cloud and all you need to have is one small agent installed on your local system. This took us one or two days.

The total deployment was longer because we have a lot of data flows in and out from the integrated system. This took us at most between four and five months to complete.

SAP Solution Lead for US,Canada and Latam at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees

The initial setup is pretty simple. The time it takes to deploy depends on the client and the environment, however.

You need customer buy-in and for them to earn the system a bit as well. Many don't want to change right away. Many are working with legacy systems. For a medium to small setup it shouldn't take more than six or seven months to deploy fully.

The amount of people you will need for deployment and maintenance also varies. If a company is into manufacturing, logistics, sales, service, finance, HR, supply chain, planning, asset maintenance - if they have all the processes - then it will need around 15 different people. Not all of them will be required for hte full six months, however, you'll need someone from each area involved at some point.

The initial setup of this solution is straightforward. The only thing to make sure of is access. A few tasks, such as creating a server account and creating a database connection, are necessary but straightforward to do. It does not require an expert, as long as the authorization is given.

Once the initial setup is complete, the deployment to the cloud is very fast. In a few seconds, we can deploy this service and start posting.

The number of people required to deploy and maintain this solution depends on the landscape and the number of interfaces. In the case of our client, where we have thirteen or fourteen interfaces, two people are sufficient. This could change based on the criticality and time that we are allowed.

The initial setup is complex. Right now, SAP does offer the best kind of solution on the market.

There is some sort of SMS needed to authorize the code. However, the VPN connectivity isn't there because some of the solution is on the public cloud.

I'm not quite sure how long deployment takes. It depends on the environment and the requirements of the business. It's different from deployment to deployment. However, we're not fully deployed just yet.
