Slack Other Advice

PaulButticaz - PeerSpot reviewer

Slack has been around for a long time, and it's an industry leader. Of course, Salesforce owns Slack now and is starting to integrate into it. I have attended Slack conferences and met with product and support managers. They're an excellent organization.

Choosing Slack depends on the organization's size, so you need to plan your deployment and make sure you put some controls and standards in place and not just turn it on.

If you're a Slack shop, you will have to have something like a Zoom or Microsoft Teams platform for when you need to do video conferencing internally or externally. Many shops have both products, but they use Slack for collaboration, chat, and so on, and use Teams for video and audio conferences. At the end of the day, Slack is missing those capabilities, so either you're going to be a Slack/Zoom shop or you're going to be a Microsoft Teams shop. I rate Slack an eight out of ten.

Engineering and product management teams should always have Slack, as it is an excellent tool for collaboration. If it is a small team, especially one that requires collaboration to support engineering development. Slack is a great tool because you can also share code snippets, which will be formatted in a code-friendly way. Slack is a good tool for these teams and is portable for everyone.

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

I would rate Slack at around eight out of ten. It's a pretty decent platform that many startups and new companies prefer today, especially for larger audiences. One of the drawbacks or areas for improvement is the learning curve users from Microsoft-based products like Link, Skype, or Teams might face when trying to adapt to Slack's architecture. Slack's structure is quite different, and it can take some time for users to become acclimated to this new orientation. Once users overcome this learning curve, it proves to be a robust and highly effective tool that can benefit many users.

I would recommend using Slack. You can also consider Microsoft Teams. They are a good alternative. In fact, if you are using Microsoft Azure cloud, Teams can be more cost-effective for you compared to Slack. However, if your company is on AWS or Google Cloud and not using Microsoft Cloud services, then Slack would be a more affordable option as a standalone system. It's worth noting that Teams comes bundled with a license for Microsoft Cloud subscriptions.

I would rate Slack a nine out of ten. They have had very few outages, and the software's features and GUI are impressive. However, there is room for improvement in the calling experience.

I would definitely recommend it. However, it depends on the situation. There may be other Slack alternatives available now. Especially for internal communication and coordination, there might be better tools suited for specific use cases. So, based on my personal experience, I would recommend Slack, but it depends on the specific use case.

I would rate this product overall a nine out of ten. They are delivering on what they claim. Whether it meets my specific use case or not, it's more about the product fit for what I wanted to achieve. But considering the extent to which we used it and its alignment with our goals, I would rate it around nine out of ten.

Slack is deployed on-cloud in our organization.

Since it's very easy to collaborate with the tool, I would recommend Slack to other users.

Even though Slack is a very useful tool with many incredible features, the fact that it tends to crash once a month makes it a little bit difficult to work with.

Overall, I rate Slack a seven out of ten.

One thing I appreciate about Slack is that when there's new information or a request from Excel, based on your settings, a notification pops up and informs you that a new update has been added to the team. It's called "Wish It," and it's really helpful for my work. I love that feature.

Additionally, if you need to save any important information, you can easily do so. Even if you accidentally close the app, the information is still there, which is really cool. Personally, if I were to rate it, I would give Slack a solid ten out of ten. Initially, when I logged into my system, I received notifications for all the information and feedback from the team I needed to access. It automatically directs me to what I need to see.

I would suggest familiarizing yourself with the application, especially its features. Personally, I haven't explored all the features, but some of my friends have, and they highly recommend them. Slack has a lot of useful information and features that you can benefit from. Additionally, you can even create side calls or group calls for your team, like after a game or after work, which is super fun.

When you're partnering with teams outside your organization, you can't really do without Slack. It becomes a necessity. We chose this solution because Slack was the most widely used solution. A lot of companies that we partner with and a lot of our customers end up using Slack. So, for us to partner with them, we needed Slack.

I would rate it a nine out of ten. It is widely used, but they need to work on its features.

I use Slack on my desktop. I have it on my phone too. All communications reach me as soon as they are sent, whether I’m in the office or outside. I don't look at the product for improvement. I appreciate what the product is doing. I'm not an administrator. I am a typical user. I joined the Slack channel because I was invited. I have access to Slack as a user, not as an administrator. I used IP Messenger as a software developer for a medium-sized organization in Kenya. We could share files. We could send text messages and all of it. We couldn’t use IP Messenger outside the office. It did not have channels.

For people who need constant communication and don’t want to rely on emails, Slack is the right tool for them. We can work on the mobile phone to communicate on the go. As long as we have internet connectivity, it is secure. We can create as many channels as we like and collaborate. We can also do voice calls and send voice notes. Overall, I rate the product a seven out of ten.

Consider the resistance to text based communication of people not used to it and those with a fear of transparent communication who are worried about the saturation of technologies.

Some gamified training can help and advocate in order to guide, moderate, and curate the channels, set some "netiquette", and encourage use and constructive behaviors.

People are getting used more and more used to text based communication through Whatsapp and other apps.

Consider that it has a strong community across the world and that is a powerful source to leverage.

This product is so flexible and powerful that it can be used as:

  • Virtual space for teams
  • Topic or action based rooms
  • A bot answered service channel
  • A back channel for events
  • A lot other use cases depending on team appetite and creativity

Certainly within the right culture, it will enhance and reduce friction in communication.

Make a significant effort to get user buy-in right from the start.

If people see it as just another system, not a powerful email reducer and productivity booster, adoption will lag.

You really need everyone on the team to be on board for it to succeed. If even one person sticks to email-first communication, it makes everyone else rely more on email, which defeats the purpose of having Slack.

From my perspective, this is a good product and I definitely recommend it. My advice for anybody who is implementing this type of product is to first consider what it is that they want to achieve, and then make the decision about which product to implement based on that. If you're trying to pick between platforms, like Teams versus Slack, I would recommend Slack for a variety of reasons. Even if you are using Teams already, I would suggest using Slack in addition because you can't go wrong.
