SonicWall SMA Initial Setup

SonicWall SMA isn't complex. I rate it eight out of 10 for ease of setup. The more features a solution has, the more complex it is. Any administrator can do it.

For my company, the initial setup and implementation of SonicWall SMA are easy because of working with SonicWall for a long time, and because my team has a lot of experience with the solution. If the customer chooses to do the setup and implementation himself, it won't be as easy. If it's just basic integration, it can be very simple, but if it's something more sophisticated, you need to be a real expert to set up and implement SonicWall SMA. I'm scoring the basic setup of the solution a four out of five.

The initial setup was straightforward for basic configurations, taking only a few minutes. However, more complex setups could take three to four hours. It can be deployed on the cloud or on-premises. I rate the process a ten out of ten.

SonicWall is not very difficult for me to deploy. I think even the layman can figure it out. They would probably configure it by following wizards, but it would work. If it is installed by a technical guy, then you can get detailed in the configuration. There isn't always a reason to get very technical and you ought to know how to do it. That's the thing.

For us, working as an integrator we can do whatever we have to. The client doesn't have to bother whatever is complex. It is our job to solve the issues. For us and our experience, it is pretty easy to do and everything is okay. The more you work on it, the easier it becomes. Usually, the more you work with any product the more you come to know the hidden portions of it.

The first time, it took us a bit longer than it does now. With any firewall — because of the recent changes, upgrades, and advancements to firewalls — a small firewall takes around three to four hours to configure. That is not meaning just a basic installation, it is with a little bit of customized configuration with the DLP's (Data Loss Protection) and that level of configuration details. If it is a bigger firewall for a bigger client, it can take around one day for configuration, testing, and performance adjustments. That is it takes almost a day altogether to finish off the installation. Not just one part alone, it is a total, completed configuration.

The initial setup was very easy for us. It is not complicated and the manuals are very clear.

We did have a slight complication on how to configure it on the firewall. This is a solution that is linked to the firewall, so having that type of configuration experience would have made it a little bit quicker. At the same time, the support from SonicWall was great. When we asked for help on this, they answered it very quickly.

When we changed to our most recent model, the users had no trouble adapting to it.

The initial setup process is easy. We have deployed the product on the cloud and on-premises. It can be hosted on private and public clouds. The deployment time depends on the customer's environment. It takes five days to complete and requires two engineers to execute the process.

It is easy to maintain and requires one engineer for it.

The initial setup was straightforward. If the ISP is good and the broadband connections are good, and, if the static IP is available, it only takes one to two days to deploy. After that, it's ready for testing and user training. With everything considered, deployment takes about three days.
