Sophos Cyberoam UTM Scalability

The solution's scalability is limited. People normally use Fortinet, and small sectors use SonicWall. I rate the solution's scalability an eight out of ten.

Sophos Cyberoam UTM is scalable, but there seems to be a tiny problem when integrating the older version of the solution.

My company has virtual appliances on the network, and in enterprise networks, you want to launch a ComNet hook or everything at the cores rather than patches. It would be best if you first thought about scalability in the microservices. If you have software-defined appliances to launch in that infrastructure and integrate that with the infrastructure, that would be very useful, so you don't need an appliance.

On the other hand, if an appliance is required in your network, you sometimes don't want to use public or cloud services, and the solution should be okay with that or should still work.

Sophos Cyberoam UTM's scalability is excellent. I rate it an eight out of ten. The scalability, addability, and all the features are good. The number of endpoints depends on the client, and we have certain clients with more than 700 endpoints. We focus on small and medium enterprise clients.

When we have a higher number of endpoints, we then do a study of the rate of data transfer, the kind of bandwidth available, and whether a single firewall will be suitable or not because that should not become a bottleneck when you are interacting with or your information is flowing into the Internet. Sizing up the product is very important.

I have not explored the scalability. It is tied to the hardware. The unit we have would support zero to 500 people. After that, you would need to get a new appliance However, we've never exceeded that appliance limit. If we ever exceed the appliance, we'd look to see what other options are available in the market. Most products in the market are quite comparable to Sophos.

I would rate the scalability a ten out of ten. It is a scalable solution. We have lots of customers using this solution.

We have 6,000 to 7,000 customers across India. And we are using and providing Cisco, Netgear, McAfee, and other products to them.

We often use NETGEAR for layer two configurations because NETGEAR  doesn't have firewall software like Sophos, and we use Sophos for layer three configurations.

It is not a scalable product. This is because if you want to increase the capacity of the solution, then you have to change the device. Presently, there are 200 users working with the solution in our company. Also, we do have plans in our company to increase the number of users using the solution. Though the solution is in production, it gets used in our company. So, utilization of the solution is around 25%.

We have not explored the scalability very much, so I will give it a 7 out of 10 as far as connectivity or support. As an IT manager, I don't get the complete report of what users are doing, so it would be great to have that also. That would be much better from an organization point of view in case my users are doing something wrong.

Usually, I have 25 licenses, so we have increased that number by 10 this year and now we have 35 licenses.

One of our clients has 200 employees and they are all relying on protection from Sophos Cyberoam UTM. Nonetheless, it is all on-premises and it does not work through the cloud, so I don't consider it to be a highly scalable product. I would say that it is better for a company with a single branch, rather than for one with multiple branches or with branches connected to a head office.

The XG series is much better compared to the previous UTM. Because with the XG series you can actually approach the enterprise level. Previously we tried to go for these large enterprises when we talked about the Sophos Firewall. When they moved to Cyberoam XG series Firewall they were much more scalable and they're much more robust compared to earlier ones.

Most of our clients are enterprise-size. We have one customer that's using almost about 200 units of the XG series firewall. Then we have other customers using it on their larger network, so they cater to about 300 to almost 500 users

There are modular firewalls. The entry-level devices do not have the slot for adding more network ports or things like that. Therefore, it depends on the organization as to what level of configuration they want. If it's a small organization, then the entry-level product, something like XG86 or XG115 et cetera, all those are sufficient. However, if it's an organization that requires adding more ports or more cards to their plans, then starting with an appliance version XG125 is ideal as it has the optional modular port whereby you can add additional cards.

I managed to scale up, but not from the model perspective. It began to fail only when the number of users grew significantly. I had to replace it but that was because we planned for 50 people and, suddenly, the organization doubled to 100 people, which was a significant jump.

Since all the products models from the smallest to the strongest have the same features and capabilities, I can say that the product is extremely scalable. However, if you need to upgrade the whole device to a stronger model, I would say scalability is 8/10, which considering the differences between the number of ports in different models (I could even give 9/10, but let’s stay with 8/10!).
