SSIS Other Solutions Considered

Sr. Architect - Data warehousing & BI at Molina Healthcare, Inc.

I did not evaluate other options.  SSIS was available, and it worked well.

I later changed jobs to another company that used SSIS, and worked to improve and grow their data warehouse solution.

After using SSIS, we have tried talend, informatica, and spark solutions.  I would go back to SSIS, even for a non Microsoft shop, if I were allowed to.

When comparing SSIS to other ETL tools, I find SSIS to be user-friendly but less efficient in handling large volumes of data compared to Oracle. SSIS could improve in managing higher volumes of data and enhancing stability, especially for data sets exceeding two terabytes. The enhnacemnets in indexing and data structure retrieval would be beneficial for managing data more effectively.

If you are considering alternatives to SSIS, I have worked with ODI in the past during consulting engagements. Colleagues have praised Informatica as a superior solution to ODI and SSIS, though I'm not aware of its pricing. While SSIS is lauded for its simplicity, there might be disadvantages compared to competitors like Informatica. However, our data warehouse team is highly satisfied with SSIS, and it is widely used in the industry. It is a common and reliable ETL tool with easily accessible solutions through internal resources and online searches, making problem-solving straightforward.

We looked at ODI, Informatica, and DataStage. All three we had in-house. ODI was the better option and after dealing with SSIS for only a few months, we ended up using ODI.

This solution was already in place. That's what is available and it's what people know. Going forward, this will most likely change.

We did not evaluate other products before choosing this solution. However, in the last couple of years, I have researched a few others. One of these solutions looks good, but I'm not sure how well it would be in a data warehouse situation.

We chose SSIS because it was a good financial decision. It was the most cost-effective option at the time.

There are many projects for the company that I work for that requires implementation for a client. I started with it because I just wanted to learn about it, and I had the chance to use it because there was an opportunity that opened up to implement it.
