Symantec Data Loss Prevention Other Advice

Serif Muammer Sak - PeerSpot reviewer

I work as an integrator.

While the solution may support Mac and Linux, Windows endpoints are more important. Every business uses IT directories and manages internal clients with Windows. Symantec already supports Mac endpoints, just not Linux clients or Linux agents. However, that's not a common thing anyway. It's a special condition. You will need a Linux agent if you are using those servers in your environment. Generally, we don't need to install a server-level agent. We also monitor a gateway-level inspection. For example, if your server is open to the internet, generally from a security perspective, the security personnel must follow a gateway-level inspection.

And the end of the day, this works for a Windows client. Generally, we don't require Linux agents for the data loss prevention solution. However, it depends on the business and it depends on the environment.

If someone just wants to use the cheapest option available, they likely will get just keyword detection. They might not get OCR or email attachment monitoring.

I cannot say that Symantec has helped reduce operating costs. However, I can say that, in general, if you don't lose data, you don't lose money.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. The reporting and technical support are not the greatest; however, overall, the product is good.

If an organization has a proper data classification solution or qualification levels in their organization, a DLP implementation will be much easier for them. Otherwise, they will have to work on their DLP deployment policy creation, and then they have to create a data classification policy.

If you're thinking of using a cheaper solution, often, it's only when a breach happens that management puts money into cyber security. These are very critical functions and these controls are necessary to know what your employees are doing and what kind of data is going out, is in ingress, or in motion. Security can't be compromised. There is no cheap product. Evaluate what your company requires.

If that kind of security is required, I would recommend Symantec DLP. It depends on your needs.

The advice I would give to others looking into implementing Symantec Data Loss Prevention is to make sure they have a lot of resources on their servers, particularly in terms of disc size, CPU, etc. The bigger the box is, the better.

There's no perfect solution, so I'm giving Symantec Data Loss Prevention a rating of nine.

My advice to people who are considering implementing Symantec DLP is to request a demo to see how it works and experience its features. Subscribing to these features, applying policies, and learning about the advantages will help them make an informed decision about whether it meets their specific needs. Overall, I would rate it as an eight out of ten.

We are implementors.

As of now, in my current company, I was designed to DLP around seven months back. My previous company is a service-based company. Normally we will connect with other partners.

Usually, we are service providers, so we'll take the project from Symantec and we will implement the approach for our business partners. Then we'll go directly to the onset location and we'll stay there and we'll do the implementation and we'll create a policy, as per the requirements. We'll do the handout documents to the management team, and we'll relocate them to the local engineers. These kinds of activities I've done. For around four years, I've continuously been doing this DLP and encryption.

I'd recommend the solution. I'd rate it at a ten out of ten.

I have experience with Symantec Data Loss Prevention. I've implemented it. I was the Symantec expert, and I've also implemented Symantec Endpoint Protection, Symantec Mail Security for Exchange, Symantec SharePoint, and Symantec network storage devices, in my previous projects.

Symantec Data Loss Prevention was deployed on-premises only because the customer requirement was to not forward the logs through the cloud directly, so the solution was installed on-premises.

In terms of the number of clients my company has for Symantec Data Loss Prevention, there are currently two thousand clients.

I would surely recommend the tool to others. Whenever my company goes to the customers, the team always recommends either Forcepoint or Symantec Data Loss Prevention.

My rating for Symantec Data Loss Prevention is nine out of ten.

The solution is deployed mostly on-premises, however, you can have agents on the cloud as well, and data classification can be done there. The server can be deployed on the cloud. It can be a hybrid as well. That said, it's mostly deployed on-prem.

My advice is that the DLP solution is the emerging platform in the world at the moment. First, we had to get some idea on how data works at the customers: data in motion, data in rest, data traveling, etc. Typically data travels through emails from the endpoint by USB, email and CD writing it to a CD or copying it to a network share or from a network share. Those are what you need to know before starting the day of implementation. How this data travels inside and outside the environment.

I would rate this solution as nine out of ten, because they are a leader, competing with some other vendors, providing updates, releasing new versions, and providing technical improvements on their side. I would say it's fine.

We are Symantec partners.

We are using the latest version of the solution. I'm not sure of the exact version number, however.

Overall it's an excellent product. It helps you reach your goal and solve some issues. We did it in six months. It's really an excellent product. There is a bit of a legacy component about the database and the way it works. We can see that the evolution of the technology was a bit slow for the backend, however, the product itself is solid.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten overall. We've been largely quite satisfied with its capabilities.

Take the following steps:

  1. Go to monitoring for 90 days.
  2. Start to reduce the allowed events. Start at 100 and reduce by 20 per month.
  3. Communicate any failures. (Allow for application changes, as legacy apps may be guilty of data transfer that is embedded in the architecture/file transfer.)

We do have many built-in components on the policy tab. So, if you're in the UK or anywhere else, we have some pre-built policies, making it easy for users to configure. These policies cover SSN, driver's license information, and other sensitive conversations. Additionally, we have some import policies, making the process even easier.

We have almost 65 components, and we are the ones handling the stack for Broadcom. We are responsible for both level one and level two support for Broadcom.

Automated monitoring of sensitive data is a much needed feature. However, the machine learning algorithms that wrongly classify documents is a major problem, when it comes to applying security policies based on document categories. A good feature is the blocking of sensitive data copying to removable storage. DLP is specifically targeted for mid and large enterprises. View full review »

I would rate it an eight out of ten. Not a ten because there are certain things that need improvement.

My advice to someone considering this solution is to look at your needs. Try a few products because there are some features that exist in other solutions like Forcepoint that do not exist in Palo Alto. You should choose a solution based on your needs.

I would recommend Symantec depending on the needs of the clients, but for me, Symantec is the best on the market.
