Symantec Endpoint Security Initial Setup

Hakeem_Abdulkareem - PeerSpot reviewer

Setting up Endpoint Security isn't complicated. You need to set up a management server to install the agents, then provide the permissions to the appropriate IPs to acquire the update from Symantec. After that, you set up distribution points for the updated data. It's not something that can be completed in a day. For instance, if you have 200 locations, you can set up three or four daily. It depends on the criticality. That's why you deploy distribution points.

If you are operating a centralized approach, all the workstations, irrespective of the location, can pull the updates from the management server and be managed centrally. However, because of bandwidth challenges, some cannot go to the server and pull the updates.

You have the flexibility to determine the components you want to generate. For instance, you can have different agents for workstations, ATMs, and servers by selecting the specific components you want to include. Everything is coming from the same management server. When it's time to update, you can do a workaround by leveraging the JDB from the Symantec portal. You must push that JDB  file to a specific path on those affected systems. It will execute and update automatically.

At this moment, I'm responsible for changing it from the on-premises to the cloud tenant.

We are working with a company, a reseller here in Brazil, that is helping us with some troubleshooting and some of the more complex things. After we tried many scripts, we found one that works really easily. But importing some things to the cloud version is not so good. For example, we exported device control from the on-premises version and imported it to the cloud version and it didn't work. So we will probably need to do it manually. This isn't great for us, because we have many devices and we will need to put them on the cloud one by one. But in general, it's not bad.

In terms of maintenance, on-prem we have to keep an eye on some features because some of our internal vulnerability tests have found that some patches had some CVEs and we had to do some updating. But that was on the management side of the solution that we use to control the devices and agents, not the agent itself. We haven't needed to worry about the maintenance of the agents.

The initial setup was really straightforward. We'd load the software on the server, link it with ID, and give it to the OU groups that we wanted to deploy the agents. We pushed out an agent installed to the machines, and then kept the agents up to date.

We had a centralized console screen that allowed us to look at the progress and check the point in time to see the stats of any of the machines. We were able to configure it so we could set thresholds for email notifications if we had certain machines that fell outside certain update standards or if there was anything that got flagged during auto protection scans or scheduled scans of machines.

I've also deployed it in smaller environments. They were standalone clients and not a server-client model.

The solution didn't really require maintenance. There were routine updates to the application whenever a new version of the application came out, but I never ran into any issues with installs and pushing the updated agents. It was always seamless.

We did the deployment and testing ourselves. The deployment wasn't as easy as we would like. The environment and network are complex. That's why we need to consider different types of deployment. We use our software configuration management and also some standalone solutions. We sometimes use DMZ for manual installation. Those were the pain points of the deployment. It's not one source of deployment that we use differently.

It took around three months to completely deploy Symantec and replace McAfee.
Our deployment team was a combination of IT and security operations. A few asset owners were included, as well. After deployment, maintenance is minimal.

Symantec is easy to set up, and it only takes about 30 minutes for a basic implementation. Once the console is ready, we need to configure the solution per the customer's requests for policies like USB blocking and application restrictions. If the customer doesn't need any custom policies, the default implementation takes 30 minutes to one hour.

Based on what I have seen and the feedback I have received, its deployment is straightforward. It takes almost a week because it goes through various stages, such as planning, designing, and deployment. It also depends on a client's environment.

The implementation strategy varies, and it depends on a client's environment, such as whether they are a huge organization or whether they have multiple remote locations.

After the deployment, the next stage is doing the configuration, which takes a little while because it involves engaging different departments of a client and doing segregation and restructuring.

It doesn't take more than four to six months for the technology to mature in the client environment. Immediately after deployment, we start making changes to tune the policies based on a client's requirements and define the exceptions. It takes four to six months to have a stable environment.

It offers flexible management and deployment options. You can install it by watching a video on YouTube, but for the implementation design, expertise is required. For example, if you are implementing it in a big bank where you have 5,000 to 6,000 endpoints and multiple branches, you need to have an implementation strategy and see how to take care of the database, replication, and other things. At that time, your expertise is going to be used for designing the solution.

It takes about 30 minutes to implement the server and the policies. The rest of the things are going to be installed by the agent, which is dependent on the network. In the same building, if you have SCCM or another deployment tool, it is a one-hour job, and it can be done by one person.

In terms of maintenance, you have to take care of your server and download the updates on a regular basis. This is only for Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SCPM). If you are a cloud site, you don't need that. Symantec will do it. For on-prem, you need a person to log in and do the updates, and there might also be a little bit of maintenance of the database.

It does not take long to install this solution.

Unfortunately, the order that we followed was not recommended. We just deployed and then obtained subscriptions after that. This is not a recommended approach for deployment. However, we have a good partner and a good support team.

Due to our limited bandwidth, we had to install manually rather than use the web-based deployment. This meant that it took us longer because we had to visit each of the physical workstations. In total, it took approximately two months to deploy.

The initial setup is a little bit complex. You need to have a certain level of training before being able to set up it. What is nice is that you can remotely install the set up on all of the infrastructures from the server, the SAPM, that is the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager, you can manage all the endpoints but it's not really easy to set up or to configure the policies. Sometimes customers find it a little bit difficult to implement for the configuration because you need some knowledge to implement the feature.

The setup depends on the issues of the network. The bottom line is if the network is really mastered, the policies on the network are really mastered in around three to four days for the new companies.

We only need one person who is well trained to manage and support this solution.

The setup is very easy, especially when done by email. You just add the end-users information on Symantec and they get an invite via email. Once they get the link they click on it. That downloads the installation file and installs it for them. Our IT team of four people work on it together.

We get the key from a local partner and we apply it on our portal. From there we push the installation files to the users and install them. Then we do the reporting system.

In terms of maintenance, it's mostly cloud-based. Updates are done automatically.

We have multiple architectures in place. A few of our clients use it on the cloud and a few have a hybrid with on-prem. The cloud-based setup is very straightforward. Once we create the account, it doesn't take more than 30  to 45 minutes for us to get the setup done.

The steps involved for a cloud instance are that an account is created, the agent is downloaded, and you probably have to push the agent to different systems. That can be done via different means and depends on the number of client machines. We can push it via SCCM or other modules or can push it manually from the central drive by having end-users download it. The process is seamless and we have been able to install Symantec on at least 150 machines within three hours. We had three resources deploying the agents on those machines in parallel.

We do regular preventive maintenance as part of our managed services, but with the cloud instance, we have never had any issues. It is on autopilot. What we do is that we regularly check for threats and whether the threats have been quarantined. We download the daily and weekly reports. The maintenance is done by one person.

It's easy to set up all the devices that are managed by the active directory, however, many devices that we are using right now to work are not managed by the active directory. For example, cell phones or any other intelligent devices. We can't protect them through Symantec Endpoint Protection, Endpoint Security.

For laptops and desktops managed by the active directory, it's relatively easy to deploy. It's not a problem as we only set a policy when a laptop or server or desktop is added to the active directory so that it's transparent. It's added immediately to the Symantec console in a transparent way.

The deployment is immediate. With the equipment managed by the active directory, it's five minutes or less.

Its updates are also not easy. We only have a small team. Usually, wherever I've worked, the IT team is pretty small and you don't normally have an engineer who is dedicated to Symantec. They do various other jobs, and they look at the application infrequently. So, when a major task comes along, because of the complexity, it is sometimes quite difficult for them to achieve what they need to do. It takes them a little while to do it because they have to re-learn the application and find the correct article in the knowledge base for the right version. The instructions can sometimes be quite complicated.

Computer Systems Administrator at a university with 10,001+ employees

The initial setup was not complex. It was simple.

The deployment was always ongoing due to the fact that, as a university with something like 16,000 employees, computers were getting bought and repurposed all the time. The initial rollout was in fact not a managed version of the antivirus. It was just a standalone version that users could download from a website when they provided their credentials. After that, they would just double click on a downloaded file and run the installer and they'd have the antivirus.

However, it was completely unmonitored. The antivirus program on their computer was not sending its data anywhere. It couldn't be helped by anyone remotely to do its job of protecting the computer.

Therefore, almost all organizations now want to have a managed antivirus solution where there's software installed on the computer, but it communicates with the cloud, and IT administrators at the organization can control this behavior and learn from it.

In terms of the staff required to handle the deployment and maintenance, there was probably the equivalent of maybe two to three full-time staff that were dedicated to antivirus endpoint protection issues.

I'm involved in its implementation from the start to the end, which includes project discussions, deployment, and handover. I work with my colleagues and provide guidance on what to perform, how to perform, and how to configure policies.

The deployment depends on the environment of a customer. Some customers have a small environment with 100 to 200 users. In such a case, the deployment is simple, and there’s no complexity. If a customer has 5,000 to 10,000 users, and they are working from different locations, requiring server configuration at different locations across the world, it gets complex. We have done successful implementation in complex as well as simple scenarios.

The deployment duration varies based on the number of users. Usually, one to two days are enough. The number of people required for deployment also varies based on the customer environment.

Two or three people are needed for deployment: one person for administration, one for deployment, and one for reporting.

The amount of people needed for maintenance depends on the different policy creations. It mostly involves creating the policies for the threat actors, the indicators of compromise, and upgrades. It also depends on the size of the company.

The initial setup is super easy. Deployment is faster than in other solutions but it still takes time. It needs to be done in steps. You initiate it with a test and pilot to discover false positives or whether it might be blocking things or creating an issue on your network. A lot of companies have custom code programs and typically any EEP would trigger false positives. The companies we deploy to are generally medium or large so you have to be strict on your load because the impact can be brutal if not done right. You then carry out an expanded pilot and once you're satisfied that it's not going to bring your network down, you deploy it almost at once. You go from deploying it to 25 endpoints as a test to maybe 200 endpoints as an expanded pilot, and then you deploy it to 5,000 computers over a relatively short period of time.

We generally offer up to a six-month window for implementation and it usually takes between two weeks to six months to fully deploy. The process isn't difficult, you just have to be careful. You can deploy all the features in a month if it's a small environment including all the testing and pilot phases.

I wouldn't say it was straightforward. There wasn't anything complex, either. Once you've done it once or twice, which I have, it's not as complex as it could be. It really depends on the size of the installation you're doing and the number of clients, etc. So obviously the bigger the installation, the more thought you need to put into it. I'd probably lean towards saying it was complex, it's not straightforward.

We have approximately fifty users and only one admin, so I'm the only person who administers here. I think the largest installation I've had would probably be about 1000G's with about one, two, three, four, five, six, no about seven administrators, but yeah and here it's just about fifty devices.

But the initial rollout, setting up SEPM server, you can do in an hour. Then, the challenge is that you can make it as complex as you want after that. It's very, very capable, but it can get quite complex.

Symantec Endpoint Protection installation and Administration Guide is awesome. The documentation is good. They provide online training and you can also do instructor-led training. There should always be training available, or information available, to help you get where you have to go. That's one of the things I do like.

I've been an instructor for Symantec for 10 years too, and I've taught the SEP course, and I think it covers off what you need to know.

The initial setup was complex. There are too many moving parts. You have to install one bit, then install the reporting function, then install the dashboard, and so on. Then you have to open the manual and check it. If it is not correct the system will restart itself and cause so many complications, every part is pretty complex.

Its initial setup is complex. I don't really handle the configuration, but it seems that its configuration is a bit complex. Its menu is not easy.

As for the initial setup, it was my IT team that handled the installation and this can be done directly from the cloud. Everything is on the cloud nowadays and this precludes the need to make purchases. An advantage to cloud installation over that done on premises is that all the updates and security patches and EMP to the particular antivirus may be handled from the cloud itself.
