Tableau is stable, and I believe stability is essential. Our infrastructure has been set up right. The last two updates have had very few bugs, so stability-wise, it is excellent. However, performance is something we need to investigate further. It's hard to say whether performance problems are on the Tableau side or an issue with the infrastructure or the data sources. If there is a performance issue, we can't identify precisely where the problem is.

We are somewhat new at it, so as more and more people onboard to the server, we'll see how that is being managed. Of course, if the performance is slow, we have to find out the reasons, the causes. If it has to do with how they are building certain things, we have to send that information back to them and then they have to correct their models.

We are in the early stages right now. I wouldn't consider ourselves in the middle or advanced stage yet. We're onboarding a number of customers now to our servers.

If I'm going to upload data of more than 10,000 records, then it might be unstable. With 10,000 rows and more than 100 columns, it really becomes shaky. However, this could also be because of the local infrastructure. For example, if I am using Tableau on my local machine with 4GB RAM, it might not be suitable.

The solution is stable.

In the past, you couldn't do a full query. You could do the right query or the left query but not the full query. They fixed that n 2016.

Also, there was another problem in that their selling approach was very aggressive and they were selling to sales directors. However, the problem is that after that you need the Tableau server. You need the deployment of the Tableau server and you have your dashboard. You needed IT buy-in. In order that them to be able to be seen in all the organizations, or even outside your organization, you need to get the Tableau server. With that in mind, companies must have IT people or training in the Tableau server, and then the dashboard is just developed in the desktop so you can upload them to the server. With all of that comes a lot of issues around security, modelization, and performance theses issues were not approached or considered in any by the users

Tableau does break down a little bit. The server version of Tableau doesn't allow you to see what is going on, making it a part of Tableau that is not great. Tableau's server version doesn't provide the ability to extract the information to see why the reports or dashboard didn't run properly. When you refresh in Tableau, you can't see what it's doing, and nothing happens since it doesn't show you what's going on, and then Tableau gets fixed all of a sudden.

It is stable, but at times, I have seen that it doesn't work for certain datasets. If the data is not correctly sanitized, there are chances that you would end up having no visualization at all, even after spending a lot of time. So, sanitization is a must in Tableau as of now. Other than that, I've not seen anything else. There are no bugs, but if the data is not sanitized, you will not get any visualization. That is a problem.

With respect to stability as a performance-driven metric, it is wonderful. Tableau is being used by one of the biggest gaming companies. Stability has mostly got to do with:

  • Connectivity to your different data and database platforms
  • The amount of data that you're dealing with

The Tableau platform can handle both of these because there is no limit per se in terms of the data size. However, a big fee is a challenge for everybody, and there is no escape from it.

Tableau has recently acquired Hyper, which speeds up the performance. Hyper is also something that Facebook uses. Therefore, when it comes to stability, it is one of the best solutions in the market. You don't need to worry about it.

If there are some glitches because a huge amount of data is coming in, there is an inbuilt performance monitoring option in Tableau where it actively monitors every user click on the platform. It will show you the results on the fly and tell you the part of your dashboarding or activity that is consuming the most memory. This way, you can optimize its performance.

Upgrading a Tableau server is too tedious compared to other tools where normally you just have an update EXE file you run and it is done. This is not the case with Tableau, it requires the dashboard to go down for an hour and then we have to republish all the dashboards again.

Tableau is stable, but the analytic tools don't distribute. You should subscribe in analytic prospectus. In that way, Power BI or Calique or Tableau uses subscription instead of publication, so if the user should ask something or should want to avail of something, they focus on a report and click on subscribe. In that way, they get the data, so the business case is changing a little. Old products, like Oracle BI or SAP BusinessObjects, have more publication features that these kinds of products don't have. I think Tableau's publication feature needs to be improved.

I think Tableau is quite stable, but it is likely to be an effect from another service, such as Web Map Service. Whenever there’s problem with the WMS, Tableau hangs with it.

I think currently we are suffering a lot of technical issues.

I am not sure if this is something encountered by other companies, but currently, the Tableau server is not really stable. We have many interruptions in the Big Tree.

It may not be related to the project directly, but because the server itself is not stable, it can impact everything, such as the performance.

Yes, certain features cause Tableau to hang repeatedly - for example, editing the data source to point to another extract. Certain issues with data blending exist as well. View full review »
