Tenable Nessus Scalability

Matthew Weisler - PeerSpot reviewer

The scalability is not an issue for the solution itself because it is a software. Scalability really depends on your hardware.

You can scale Nessus to the extent that you can afford it. You need to have a license for every device you scan. As long as you can afford the increased costs, you won't have a problem scaling it.

The scalability of Tenable Nessus is good. However, it could be more flexible.

We have over 400 people using the solution. We plan to increase our usage, but it depends on the progress of the business.

I rate the scalability of Tenable Nessus an eight out of ten.

The solution can scale.

We have very few users. It's basically based on the number of systems that we need to install it on in terms of scaling. That's something that probably is more than the number of users who actually access the system. It's largely used by the security team.

We do have plans to increase the usage of Tenable Nessus organically. As the number of systems that we use is dynamic in nature, it likely will keep going up and down over time.

Tenable Nessus is highly scalable.

We have a couple of administrators and vulnerability analysts who run scans, and read-only accounts for the SMEs who fix vulnerabilities, and an executive role for management to view the data.

We use Tenable Nessus extensively, we have scheduled jobs running all the time. We do scans on all the systems on our network, and we are always making tweaks.

The product itself is not scalable by design. It is a single-user product, so it doesn't allow you to have multiple users at the same time. You have only one account. The type of product that we're using is not really meant for huge enterprises, and it's a bit more limited in terms of usage.

At present, I use the personal version for the account I'm looking after, but we probably have less than five people using this platform.

It is very scalable. I'd rate it a four or five out of five in terms of the ease of expansion.

We would use Nessus to conduct a vulnerability assessment. How many people use the solution depends on the client. Maybe five or six people from the engineering side use it in general.

We have a new client coming on, and we will require more users on the product to conduct vulnerability assessments, so we do have plans to increase usage.

The scalability is okay. We would definitely run into issues if we wanted to save a longer history of the data. It would be terabytes and terabytes of data. But in terms of at least keeping all the data for all the assets that we have, it's good. We're good enough with the retention. It meets our requirements.

The issues would be storage and being able to search across it. If we needed to save five years of scan history, it would be operationally difficult to use all the data that would be saved. But it's not problematic to look at the current data or trends for the past six months. Stuff like that is fine.

We're at about 20,000 hosts and it's pretty stable. I don't think we're going to do a big increase.

Tenable Nessus is a vulnerability product. We have two to three users who are running it, but in terms of the end devices, because it's intended for vulnerabilities scanning and you have to scan your end devices, we have around hundred devices who are scanning with it.

It is a scalable solution.

The scalability was very good. We were able to deploy it into multiple remote sites using the scanners. You can deploy separate scanner VMs into remote locations where you don't have access. They have Tenable.io in the cloud, which allows you to do all that.

I used it in a very large environment. Just in my sector, we had about 5,000 workstations along with about 150 servers. So it was a pretty sizable environment. The company was using it for a much bigger purpose. It had between about 50,000 and 100,000 workstations and about 10,000 servers.

In my environment we had about seven users logging into it. The company as a whole had about 150 users. They were security engineers, security administrators, system administrators, and system engineers. For maintenance of Nessus, there was only a team of about 15 people.

Scaling is easy because it goes out and examines the network and identifies all the nodes that are out there. You don't have to worry about scalability, per se. It's just another node that it adds to the list, so it's easy.

It's being used for under 500 nodes. I would like to increase it if possible, but I have no plans to do so.

We haven't had to scale it yet. We haven't scaled internal Nessus because we have our own version of it. I'm not sure how many IP addresses we're feeding, but I know we only have one server. I looked at the processes, and it's only doing 50% of the process.

We have 13 people who are capable or licensed to use it, which would be all of our risk management information, information security, and risk management office, but I would say only half or about six of us are actually using it daily.

We can add more scanners to the scan zone. We can also create different organizations in terms of scanning, so I think the scalability is good.

We use Tenable on 300 servers. In our office we have two or three people using the solution who are network security engineers. Two or three people are enough to take care of deployment and maintenance of Tenable.
