Teradata Pricing

SurjitChoudhury - PeerSpot reviewer

Teradata is an expensive tool.

Teradata, along with Informatica, is expensive. Teradata is still widely used in the Middle East, especially in banks across Dubai and Saudi Arabia, indicating its continued relevance. Compared to open-source solutions and other market offerings, Teradata remains on the higher end of the pricing spectrum.

Like, if you're already using Microsoft products like Windows, they'll market all their products together. And with the rise of cloud technologies, companies will adopt solutions that offer them some privileges or facilities.

Similar to how SAP does it in the market, so do Microsoft and other companies. Even Oracle and other such tools are quite commonly seen compared to Teradata's competitors in everyday solutions.

Teradata pricing is fine, and it's competitive with all the legacy models. On a scale of one to five, with one being the worst and five being the best, I'm giving Teradata a three, because it can be a little expensive, when compared to other solutions.

They've got various licenses. We would ensure that clients have all the licenses and everything for all the systems rolled out. That was part of the deal when we sold our system to Teradata. In the new system, subscriptions ensured everything was covered, or most everything was covered. The only thing we brought into the subscription side was the hardware and software support were separate. In the old days, you had to take the node support, hardware and software local, and the subscription and the bar support. With the latest models we sold, you just had the local support which you brought in and the subscription.

It comes at a notably high cost for what it offers. Apart from the standard licensing fees, there are supplementary costs associated with the licensing course. I would rate it one out of ten.

It is yearly basis. The licensing is based on a contract. It's a very expensive product.

I would rate the pricing model a three out of ten, where one is very expensive and not cost-effective, and then ten is a very cheap product. The solution is fairly expensive.

The cost depends on the size and it can be quite expensive. If you have 1,000 users, the cost can be anywhere from half a million to a million dollars a year.

The pricing makes sense for bigger projects. It wouldn't make sense for smaller companies or smaller projects.

The price of Teradata is expensive. However, what they deliver they are outstanding. If you're looking for an inexpensive solution to run a database, this isn't your tool. It's the Ferrari of databases for data warehousing.

There are add-ons that you can purchase, such as special features. Teradata likes to sell an industry logical data model that's customized for just about every industry they have clients in. That is an extremely expensive add-on, but it does give you a step up in getting your logical modeling created. They've also done some work towards being able to go from logical to physical in an automated fashion with that ILM.

I'm not overly aware of pricing. That said, my understanding is that it is reasonable. While it has a bit of an edge in pricing, everyone is relatively close in pricing.

I'm not sure if we would want to keep paying for the solution. They should make some of the software a community edition or something like that to encourage more people to use it.

Negotiate, negotiate, and negotiate some more. But long before you start to have a clear understanding of your direction, use patterns and check the roles that BI plays in the organization. Make sure you have the in-house skills to design and support the solution, as relying on external sources is extremely costly and tends to lock you into specific platforms, tools, and paradigms.

Pricing can seem high, but when all factors are taken into account, the total costs are comparable to other databases as:

  • Few DBA’s are required
  • Unplanned downtime is very rare.

By avoiding the Enterprise solutions, you can actually end up with a cheaper, yet much more powerful machine. We moved from an Enterprise platform, to non-Enterprise and ended up with a machine that was 20X more powerful. We got an amazing performance boost.

It is still a very expensive solution. While I very much like the pure technological supremacy of the software itself, I believe Teradata as a company needs to become more affordable. They are already losing the market to more flexible or cheaper competitors.

Teradata is expensive, so it's typically marketed to big customers. However, there have been some changes, and Teradata is now offering more flexible pricing models and equipment leasing. They've added pay-as-you-go and cloud models, so it's changing, but Teradata is generally known as an expensive high-end product.

Price is quite high, so if it is really possible to use other solutions (e.g. you do not have strict requirements for performance and huge data volumes), it might be better to look at alternatives from the RDBMS world.
