TitanHQ SpamTitan Primary Use Case

Allan Smith - PeerSpot reviewer
Chief Technology Starategist at Code Vapor LLC

I'm the owner of a managed service provider. SpamTitan provides a front end for Office 365 for some of my customers. About three years ago, some of my clients came under an email attack, so I deployed an email filter from Barracuda. We used that for a few years before switching to SpamTitan.

We offer SpamTitan as a solution to those who need it. I don't think everybody needs it. Office 365 does a decent job of filtering spam, but SpamTitan is easier to use and probably performs better for customers with significant spam problems. It's a 100% cloud solution, but it's not like we deploy it to AWS or Azure and integrate it into their cloud or anything. It's a turnkey solution.

Within our company umbrella, there are three companies under us, with everything from sales to marketing to customer interaction, both inbound and outbound. Anytime that we receive any type of email, it gets filtered through SpamTitan.

The way that we have it set up is to filter keywords, in addition to its artificial learning capabilities. If something looks like it was written by a human, it will allow it to pass through, unless it throws some kind of flag that something looks suspicious. In general, it simply routes emails to our employees, giving us warnings if there is anything suspicious that we need to know about before those emails actually are received.

We use the cloud version of the solution, we don't have an onsite server. We have multiple companies within my company, but we've set them all up to route through SpamTitan.

It is our primary filtering system. We use it to filter emails on behalf of organizations who have their own email system platforms, like Office 365. In terms of extensiveness, we use it 100%.

It takes the load off of our server. It also takes the load off of our Internet connection, since we are not bringing in a whole bunch of spam emails unnecessarily that need to be filtered out.

We partnered with TitanHQ SpamTitan platform so all incoming emails go through their servers first before they reach our network. It takes out, on average, 75% to 80% of the emails that would normally be received as junk. Those are filtered out and we keep what is important to us.

For example, since we don't do business with China, we block any emails coming from there because most of them try to do something malicious.

We sell communications solutions to companies like Microsoft, Cisco, 8x8, and RingCentral. We mainly use SpamTitan for basic email filtering. We don't use geoblocking because most of our client companies' employees work remotely, so we're working with users in India, Bulgaria, the United States, and multiple destinations in Europe. We might configure it one day, but not now.

Each employee gets a report every morning, and we authorize them to release the emails they want from quarantine. It's their responsibility. We are all working remotely, so our antivirus and other security solutions don't work well unless everyone is connected to a VPN. We are seeking a cloud solution for that.

In the meantime, SpamTitan is much better for our users. They can check their spam reports and see whether those emails are really spam or not.

For our clients who are big enough, and have the ability with their firewalls, we sometimes go in and put SpamTitan right on their firewalls. Or, if we are moving everybody to Office 365, then we use it that way with the Microsoft side of things. We also do a lot of refined stuff with that as well.

We have some clients who have been around for a long time, meaning that their domain has been out there for a while and they have had a high turnover of workers. A lot of them had huge amounts of spam coming in. When we were running the Exchange servers, they were being swamped before we had something like this solution put on. Once we put on SpamTitan, it was a big relief for me. I could sleep that night. Also, it took pressure off our infrastructure.

Our entire bank is using SpamTitan in a virtualized environment at several locations. It migrates from one server room to a different one. For example, if a server room goes down, it just migrates to the second one, then it goes up there. We have a single SpamTitan virtual appliance, which is on both sides of our data center. When a data center is down or very load heavy, it just migrates to the second one and we work through there.

We're an MSP providing IT services and we host mail servers in Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.

We host SpamTitan behind a firewall, and the SpamTitan appliances talk to a first load balancer. The load balancer directs the traffic to our mail servers which are still in the DMZ. After the Edge servers, they redirect the mail flow to our internal firewalls. From these firewalls, we go to another load balancer and the backend infrastructure, where we have our mailboxes.

We are focused on the MRR and the MSP revenue is the main one. This shifts the relationships to long-term with our customers. Our aim is to raise the bar of the customer satisfaction and value we provide.
SpamTitan is a natural add-on for our portfolio of MSP and MSSP offerings. We love upsells, so all the customers will eventually be offered the other products from TitanHQ, but it will be step by step. Usually, it takes time to onboard a new customer. We distinguish technologies, processes and people onboarding. This is the reverse order by importance, but the right one in the timescales.
Spam protection is not a new thing on the market and most customers have some other solutions in place. When we replace another MSP, we inherit agreements that can't be cancelled today. We onboard customers with many different technologies, so we have to provide service for them and wait for the contract to expire before we can replace that technology.

We use SpamTitan to reduce to amount of time our clients' employees spend on spam emails and protect them from malicious links and attachments to improve overall IT security. These are the primary use cases. With inflation in salaries, we don't want to waste the time of our customers and employees. Also, even if we provide IT security awareness training, some people may still click or respond to something in the wrong way. The e-mail channel is still the prefered method for virus distribution.

Every employee faces an avalanche of emails daily, so one doesn't want to make the picture worse. It is preferable to remove as much as possible and still have that self-learning mechanism.

We use it to provide 100% spam protection for us as well as all of our clients. It is ultimately part of our layered security approach since not one thing can do it all. You need a lot of stuff. Therefore, they are a part of that solution.

The way that we are structured in our go-to-market strategy, this solution is part of a whole host of things. Though it is typically not the forerunner since spam is not a major forerunner, but if it is definitely a thing to be on the table, then they would be at the meetings and helping us to land deals. Security, in general, is typically something that is part of our go-to-market strategy. At that point, people want to hear about the layers of security and the fact that we have a spam filter and how that integrates with other components of monitoring their network.

We are an IT consulting company. We use SpamTitan for clients, that prefer an on-premise option instead of the cloud. Due to strict requirements and security concerns using the cloud is prohibited so they need to protect their servers in-house email servers.

We always use a multi-tiered approach when it comes to designing and securing our clients email environments and SpamTitan is one of the products that we use. When email comes in, it is first scanned at the firewall, then it is passed onto SpamTitan. SpamTitan checks it again and then forwards it to the email server.

For the past four years, this solution is working well and our clients are satisfied with our approach.

SpamTitan filters all incoming mail. We don't allow anything to come into our mail server without passing through SpamTitan. It filters out malware, spam, and any other email-based threat. It's a SaaS solution that's entirely on the cloud. Everything is redirected from our server to the SpamTitan servers.

They do the necessary filtering and pass all the safe emails through to our server. Our servers are configured to only accept IP connections from three or four IP addresses that are specific to SpamTitan, so nobody else can get into the mail server.

Our system consists of two physical servers and several virtual servers. One box is in the office, and there's a backup server at my home. The mail server just happens to be my home. We have about seven or eight end users, but each user can have multiple accounts.

For example, we have an account for receiving special categories of mail that are placed in a designated folder. In other words, we create accounts that are associated with individual people. We have an online credit card processing company, so when they send emails, it goes to an email address called info@wegmanlevin.com. When it arrives here, it gets split off into a separate folder.

We use it for spam. Our biggest concern has been malware. Spam is a nuisance, but malware could be very damaging to our systems, and losing data just wasn't an option for us. It is that security side. The actual spam piece is probably secondary in my mind. Spam was certainly an inconvenience because of user complaints, but filtering out malware was huge for us. I would rather stop these things at the perimeter than rely on a local computer's antivirus.

We use it for exactly what it is supposed to be for. We use it for filtering out any malware that has been sent via email. For your truly obvious spam, I would rather put that out on the edges so end users don't have to see that junk in their junk mailbox. For some reason, being a college, the amount of spam we get is unbelievable. I would rather not overload users with too many things in their junk folders from Outlook. It just cuts down on the amount of noise that end users have to deal with.

We are a college. We are primarily a Windows shop, though we do have some Macs internally. Our servers are Windows-based. We have two locations. However, that whole idea of locations has gotten pretty fuzzy, not only with the cloud, but with the emphasis on remote work. The nice thing is that it filters mail before it even comes into our mail server and it doesn't matter where somebody is. They could be on campus at either one of our locations, or they could be at home, and SpamTitan will do what it is supposed to do.
