Trend Micro Smart Protection Initial Setup

ManelAlvarez - PeerSpot reviewer
Head of CyberResilience Services & BDM at Devoteam Management Consulting

Installing Trend Micro Smart Protection is typically easy, but it can be tricky if you have another antivirus that must be removed first. A cloud solution is a better option as it simplifies the process by only requiring an endpoint connection to the console, ensuring safety and ease of deployment. Deploying Trend Micro Smart Protection usually takes just a few minutes. It involves preparing an SQL table, checking the environment for optimal performance, and ensuring no conflicting antivirus solutions exist. Once that is done, deploying it is as simple as running a script. We have a team of eight engineers who maintain the solution.

Initially, there was a challenge where we had to change our server and do the installation, however, that wasn't due to the functionality of Trend Micro. When you change the server you need to have all the clients' requirements related to the parameters of the new server. We did that through group policies and running small scripts in the stackable scripts of the group policy. That way, from the Windows side, certain clients get redirected to the new server.

However, when we wanted to upgrade it to the latest client version in July, we had to do them all manually. It pushes the installation to the client when it comes to implementers. Yet, in terms of changing the version, upgrading the version, or the agent on the client-side, sometimes you need to do that manually. We have 400 clients, and we needed to load them one-by-one. We had to manually remove the old version and install the new version.

Deploying Trend Micro Smart Protection is straightforward, but challenges arise when transitioning assets from on-premises to the cloud. Since the service relies on the cloud, specific ports and configurations need to be adjusted. It's common practice to use a proxy to secure servers, although this process isn't yet optimized. Many enterprise clients prefer not to expose their network directly to the internet for security reasons.

The initial setup of Trend Micro Smart Protection was straightforward. The full implementation took us approximately two months.

We have a different strategy for us to build in-house capability to not only use Trend Micro Smart Protection but support it at the first level and we go as far as the second level. This is our methodology.

Trend Micro Smart Protection's initial setup is easy. The agent is pushed by any PDQ software at the client end, and just one click is required for installation. All endpoints are connected with Apex One Central, and Apex One Central is connected with XDR Vision One and Trend Micro Smart Protection.

The initial setup is straightforward. Regarding deployment, there aren't any significant challenges. However, in comparison to other products I've worked with throughout my career, Trend Micro needs more setup resources. This might not pose an issue for users equipped with a substantial amount of memory or RAM, but for lower-end machines, the product tends to consume a considerable portion of the CPU, which could potentially lead to complications for customers utilizing AWS.

The tool’s setup is not complex. It is a Linux-based platform and there is no configuration. We can configure the schedule to update and push through the network server which will take around one hour to complete.

We don't find something difficult in terms of deployment in comparison to other end-point security solutions. The deployment time required for this solution depends on the network; for example, if it's a network for a hundred users, we can finish in two to three days.

Based on the network size, only one or two engineers are required for complete deployment. The product is easy to maintain and needs only one person for maintenance. As the product has been in the market for a very long time, the customers find the console very flexible and easy to use.

Smart Protection is easy to deploy. The time needed for deployment depends on the number of sites and endpoints. It can take anywhere from one to three months. You need a minimum of two engineers and a maximum of six.

We also provide a managed service. For my research project, there are two assigned engineers and around two to four help desks.

I would not say that the initial setup is easy or difficult. It does require some expertise, so it is not easy. It is difficult in terms of management.

The length of time for deployment depends on the number of clients. With more than 2,000 clients, our deployment took almost one and a half months. We have six people, two engineers and four technicians, who were involved in the deployment.

The setup was pretty straightforward.

The deployment, in terms of the upgrade process, isn't as simple. If Microsoft, for example, patches things, you have to pause or disable the software before the patch and upgrade is applied before you can enable the agent. It would be helpful if this process was easier and if the solution would ultimately be more compatible with Microsoft's upgrades. It requires a lot of the user's attention.

We have an implementation strategy to move from on-premises to the cloud in the near future.

We required three people for maintenance.

In terms of deployment, we didn't deploy the entire suite at once but in phases. It was quick, however, as we are not a big organization. For us, it was straightforward and we didn't have any issues.

While I'm not sure how the initial setup goes, I can say that for the end customer it is only a script, so it's less than a second to deploy. It's auto-pushed by the ADs, Active Directories.

We have three engineers that can handle deployment and maintenance tasks.

The initial setup is very straightforward.

It takes a much shorter time to deploy compared to any other product that I have worked with. As an example, I have one client who purchased 150 licenses. The choice was made to deploy it to the cloud. From start to finish, with the configuration and fine-tuning, it took between four and five hours.

I would estimate that the deployment takes between 30 and 40 minutes unless you face some kind of unprecedented difficulty in your network that is not related to the endpoint. The length of time also varies depending on how big the network is and how ideal the situation is. Sometimes, for example, you need end-users to turn off their computers.

The installation is fairly straightforward, but it also depends on how deep you want to go. If you want to do encryption of all the endpoints with it, then it becomes a bit more challenging because encryption on an endpoint is a challenge in itself. It's time-consuming, and it needs certain things to be done in the BIOS and so forth before the encryption works perfectly. Usually, it takes about half an hour per endpoint, and that includes troubleshooting the anomalies.

In terms of the people required for its implementation, it depends on how quickly you want to do it. It takes about half an hour per installation. What we usually do is that we've got a team of people who sit and do the installation and configuration. So, the initial installation and configuration take a bit of time, but after that, running it isn't time-consuming.

The deployment is typically straightforward, however, it depends on the policies the company has to put in place. Other than that, it's not too much of a hassle. I cannot recall the exact amount of time it takes to deploy the product. There's typically a session and then discussions with the client before deployment even takes place, however, it's all part of the process.

As I wasn't part of any technical implementation, I cannot speak to how many individuals are part of an implementation.
