What do you think of Turbonomic?

Interesting aspects of Turbonomic: Turbonomic is helpful in generating a variety of reports. In most cases these reports act as the baseline for maintenance activities that we carry out within our virtual environment. Turbonomic has a user friendly outlook making it easy for consumers to navigate within the web UI. I use the 'Plan' tab within Turbonomic to perform capacity planning and trending analysis thereby predicting growth/decline within the virtual infrastructure. Scheduling reports and creating dashboards (for subsets of the environment) are a few among many features within Turbonomic. Great product! We were able to correctly size our VMs giving back CPU, memory, and storage capacity to be used in other projects. We can now reclaim license costs and forecast future resource needs.

What needs improvement?

What is most valuable?

I really like the capacity dashboard, that allows us to plan our upcoming projects to ensure we have enough resources to support the project.

How has it helped my organization?

Our VMWare servers run a lot smoother with this product as it continues to look at resources and ensures our servers are on the best host at that point in time.

What needs improvement?

I think the web interface could be better, I know they are working on a new one so I'm looking forward to seeing the final product when its released.

What other advice do I have?

We will continue to use the product because it works and is easy to monitor and train others in my team to use.

What is most valuable?

* Very easy installation. * Reports back with recommendations and system health within hours of deployment.

How has it helped my organization?

Better than DRS to load balance VMs across hosts, allowing us to release 30% more computing resources.

What needs improvement?

Had issues trying to get Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts attached to Turbonomic. This required more effort as there are some changes to be made on WMI configurations. No way… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Reasonable costs based on a per socket license model.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used vFoglight previously, but this was mainly a reporting tool. Turbonomic manages your infrastructure for you and assists with future planning/provisioning.

What other advice do I have?

Easier integration with Hyper-V hosts/clusters would be nice. Not sure if newer versions have been able to improve this.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

vFoglight, Solarwinds Virtual Manager, Cibra.

What is most valuable?

The customizable dashboard lets us get quick insight into our environment. The quick overview of your environment allows you to get to fixing the things that matter most quickly.

How has it helped my organization?

It allows us to plan accordingly for any future growth.

What needs improvement?

There needs to be a way to permanently ignore certain alerts, such as if you have a server where you know the HDD space is low but also know it's never going to grow any to tell it to always ignore that one. Also email alerts for HDD space… more»

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did use Virtualization Manager before and it didn't seem near as robust as Turbonomic and it was more expensive so we switched.

What other advice do I have?

This is an overall great and easy to use product and has been very helpful in our organization, definitely recommend it!

What is most valuable?

Dashboard. Quick way to monitor the vCenter. Improve Overall efficiency dashboard has identified resource consumption by individual VM's either to much or not enough.

How has it helped my organization?

Tuning VM's to the correct resource consumption, memory or CPU, has provided a true snapshot of the environments "foot print". This has aided in the correct sizing of physical machines needed to… more»

What needs improvement?

Definitions/descriptions of what each chart means. The line graph looks good, but doesn't mean anything without prior knowledge of what a "good UI" number is for example. I have a server with host UI… more»

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I did not previously use a different solution.

What other advice do I have?

The Turbonomic solution works/performs as advertised. It automatically removes a large workload in the day to day care of my virtual environment.

What is most valuable?

Automation of tasks to keep the resources loads on my ESX servers balanced. The reporting functions also save me a lot of leg work when requests are made from those higher up about over environment performance and trends.

How has it helped my organization?

It keeps resources loads balanced with in my ESX clusters. Also the information about scaling up or scaling down machines is very useful as I am able to properly increase or decrease resources for virtual machines. We are more efficient and once again the reporting allows us to get pertinent data… more»

What needs improvement?

There are a lot preconfigured reports that can be ran within Turbonomics for some of the more common information needed. To do a custom report you have to create a SQL Query string and add it as a report to gather custom information. It would be nice to have the ability to choose the contents of the… more»

What is most valuable?

Obviously, automation has been the most valuable feature - it's what initially attracted us and likely our main reason for purchase. However, its reporting and planning features are also very useful and contribute greatly to ROI.

How has it helped my organization?

Not having to regularly monitor our VM environments' resources has been a definite improvement over our previous time-intensive and often reactive processes.

What needs improvement?

Built-in, context-sensitive 'Help' would be useful at times, instead of having to search through the User Guide or Community for assistance - or just for those times when you're curious about the function of a particular option/feature.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Their per-socket perpetual licensing works very well for us. Pricing was aggressive, as compared to other options we had.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Other than manually monitoring and manipulating resources, DRS (which really doesn't even compare) is the closest "solution" we previously used. Reasons for switching? Real automation, forecasting, and reporting.

What is most valuable?

For us, the monitoring features, as well as the right-sizing recommendations and reports have been the most valuable.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps us stay on top of the health of our virtual infrastructure, make near-real-time decisions on how to fine-tune and adjust our infrastructure, and lets us be proactive in our approach.

What needs improvement?

The appliance interface doesn’t list the features/capabilities that licenses can be purchased for, so unless you were directly involved in the negotiations. Purchasing of the appliance, there is no… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Turbonomic is a good value for the money, and they've always been fantastic to work with.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not eval other options, as there weren't that many to choose from, and Turbonomic was the most attractive.

What is Turbonomic?
