I haven't had it fail, especially with the 8.X line. Other users report bugs, but we've never encountered any of those issues in our own implementation. Once, I didn't patch it for a year, and it kept running. No Windows system can be up for 365 days and not need a reboot. This solution is rock solid.

I've never ever had it crash or go down.
Turbonomic is one of the best software solutions ever written. You just set it up and you only go in there when you're having a problem. The truth is that we don't have that many problems anymore. The only time we had a problem was shortly after I first started, because none of the guys even paid attention to it because it always did its job. We ended up having to change our vCenter server. We moved from a physical box to an appliance and when we did that, the vCenter had to have a new name. Because none of the guys, other than my boss, were around when Turbonomic was set up, they didn't log into it because it always did its job. They totally forgot about it. And for something like two weeks we were seeing some goofiness where boxes were getting hot. I messaged, "Hey, did you put that change in Turbonomic?" and he replied, "Did I put what in what?" Other than that, we just don't have to go in there. It works so well that we just don't do anything to it.
We have it set up to throw out some alerts if things get too haywire, but it didn't even get to that point. We like to be very proactive in keeping our systems very low in resources. Had we let the problem go on a little bit longer, it probably would have thrown out an alert, but the problem was that we didn't have the vCenter in there.

The stability is very good. We have not had to open up any support tickets for the product to troubleshoot or recover the appliance. It has been running just fine. We haven't had to redeploy or recover anything with it, surprisingly, in the two and a half years that we have had it. The code updates are pretty easy to perform as well. Ongoing maintenance is really simple, and our account team helps us with the code updates. They get a meeting invite together, then it is less than a whole 10 minutes, but they are there every step of the way.

There were some issues, but they were not very frequent.
View full review »It's been very stable and we've had no issues with it. We did have an issue with the update, however. Turbo was really, really helpful and just involved right away and we were able to get that problem resolved. That said, in terms of general stability, it has been greatly stable.

Because of the size of our company, earlier versions were slow. However, they rearchitected the product about a year or 18 months ago and containerized parts of it, so we could expand and contract. Performance has been good since then.
I've a couple of guys who support it. We upgrade six or seven times a year. We are upgrading fairly often, so we are very close to current.
We have one guy spending maybe three weeks of the year doing upgrades. The upgrades are easy and fairly frequent, but there are almost always enhancements with these releases.
There are probably 50 people using it now. There are a handful who use it almost every day for sizing and infrastructure. We have a capacity management team who uses it all day long, every day. There are also multiple cloud teams and application teams who have been given access, so they can use it to appropriately size and work on their own applications. We are in the process of automating that to get that data out to everybody. There are a lot of other key teams who have found out what we were doing, and are like, "Can we have access to it now? So, we don't have to wait?" We are like, "Sure."

We have had some issues with downtime in the past, realizing it might stop running and we weren't made aware. But the stability's been fairly solid. Working closely with our account team, they understand how we use the product, and more often than not, encourage us not to run the latest version. They want to make sure that we're properly testing before we go to the bleeding edge.
There is value-added from the support team, in them knowing our environment, and what might be impacted by the upcoming upgrades.

It was definitely more stable on-prem. The reason I say that is because we've had several times where we have run into licensing issues. I don't know why that has been the case, although they have been few and far between.
But when it has no issues, it runs just as if it were on-prem. The performance and the stability are not a problem.

The stability has been pretty good.
One thing of note is that we did go through an upgrade from one Turbonomic appliance to a newer version and, unfortunately, a policy that was created and that was meant to be kept disabled, was transferred over and enabled. That wreaked havoc on our VMware landscape. It started making changes to servers, such as memory-up and memory-down changes, and that caused a big kerfuffle.

It is very stable. I don't think it has ever gone down unless it was something that we did. If you have a good system that is sized properly, then it works well.
The solution doesn't require any maintenance on our side.
We schedule for change windows because a lot of the times the recommended changes will require a restart. So, we have to do them when they don't affect anybody. For a lot of what we are using Turbonomic, it will suggest actions that require restarts, shutdowns, etc. Those need to be done off-hours.

I haven't had a problem yet with an update. I've updated it three or four times over the last two years, and the machine has been stable. I haven't had any crashes. It has been doing as what's expected, and upgrades are pretty straightforward.
They do the upgrades quarterly, but I really haven't seen any bugs out of it that I would report back in. They're pretty sufficient at doing their beta testing before they release a major release. I usually wait about a month until they've released a major release.
