Ubiquiti UniFi Switches Initial Setup

Murali Sunkara - PeerSpot reviewer

I've been using Ubiquiti UniFi Switches for a long time, so I just slap them in. I would say they're a little bit harder than most for the initial install if you are a pro-consumer. For an IT guy that has at least a little bit of background in networking and things like that, they slap right in. But if you are faint of heart, I would have to say that they're a little trickier than just buying a Netgear and slapping it in. It is a level two, level three switch. So, you can't just expect to slap it in. It's smart.

On a scale of one to ten, where one is easy and ten is difficult, I rate the initial setup of Ubiquiti UniFi Switches as a ten.

The solution is deployed on the cloud and on-premises.

The deployment phase takes fifteen minutes and requires the help of minimal staff.

Once you've learned how to do a Ubiquiti setup, then everything else is like a rubber stamp. It's very trivial. I just copy a configuration and paste it into a new controller, and I'm up and running in half an hour. I can bring up five APs or 60 or 70 APs and if the wiring is done and we just have to go place the APs, that takes up the most time. It's physically climbing up the ladder and screwing the thing into the wall.

For everything else with the software configuration, they do the auto-learn. They pick up their own address pool, and we're running them on separate VLANs from everything else. There's management VLAN that takes care of setting them up and pushing configurations out and doing updates. But there are the user VLANs. That's what people think that they're talking to when they are connecting with their cell phones or their laptops. That's all separate for security reasons.

For maintenance, we have just one guy who takes care of terminations and hanging APs. He does a lot of other things as well with DC Cat5 and Cat6 wiring and low voltage stuff. I'm the only one who does the software end of the management. So, it's really just two guys.

Realistically, I don't have to do this. It's not something I even look at every day because it sends me a text message when there's something horrible going on. It sends me an email status message at 1:00 a.m. every day.

It is easy to set up the solution.

With a small network with ten Ubiquiti switches, you and do it in two or three hours. A larger deployment would take longer.

First, we set up the controller and then deploy the IPs and put them in the same network and configure everything.

We have three people that are able to handle deployment and maintenance. They are engineers.

The initial setup is straightforward. Moreover, these switches offer many interesting features, especially when multiple switches are housed in a single rack. You can overlay augmented reality using your cell phone camera to gain additional information about cable names and their respective connections. The setup was deployed within two days in seven office branches, an entire data centre network with 50 devices.

Configurations take a couple of hours to a couple of days depending on the customer's environment. We use Ubiquiti Clarity which makes it easy to adapt and configure access points.

We haven't had any issues at all since he put it. Now, I'm impressed as I learn more about it and read. It's an excellent system.

It doesn't require any maintenance.

It is a complex product so, of course, the setup is complex. However, it is straightforward in that you have the freedom to do what you want to do, without any limitations. There is a big community that supports you if you have issues with the configuration.

The deployment is quite fast. We took about two weeks to get the switches running exactly the way we wanted them to, but for simple tasks, you can do it in just two days. It's really easy.

Personally, I think that it is much easier to do if you are already familiar with the command line and the terminology from Cisco.

Deploying the solution is easy. We're time-bound for each project, so we don't encounter issues deploying the product. Typically, we can deploy it within one day or even less.

We perform maintenance on Ubiquiti UniFi Switches based on the needs of our clients. Some clients require monthly maintenance, others quarterly, and some even weekly. We conduct checks and immediate replacements as necessary during these maintenance periods.

The initial setup is simple if we have the right version of the controller. We always need to upgrade the software. The products are not compatible with all the versions. I bought a new switch but couldn’t see it in my controller. The controller version was lower, and I couldn't upgrade it then.

It is not overly complicated. It all depends on which features you intend to use. If you don't want to change anything, you can run the thing pretty much plug and play out of the box. Aside from that, it all depends on how fancy you want to get with it.

One of the reasons I chose it was because it is flexible. Because you have to configure some things on it, it's obviously more difficult to set up than a simple unmanaged plug and place switch, but it's not overly difficult in my opinion.

This one that I am running now probably took me less than two hours to get it up and running and doing what I needed it to do.

They just give you a small card. You can scan the code on the card and go to the web page. You can also directly go to the web page to see the documents. They do not provide any documents with the box. You need to go to the internet to see how to do the initial setup, that is, how to set the login ID, password, default IP (if it exists), and other options.

As compared to Ubiquiti, Cisco provides exact communication about whether the IP address needs to be configured on the device or whether it is pre-configured.

The initial setup was mostly straightforward.

That's one of the key features because you don't have to do any deep thinking trying to get a complex configuration. It's by the numbers. You know if you messed up in a heartbeat. You don't have to guess. Sometimes you have to do a little digging to determine what got messed up. However, even if you have to backtrack a bit, it's very easy to deploy.

Deployment takes a couple of hours typically, from design to final implementation.

We have about 13 maintenance people that cover the entire operation of the organization and this solution.

Our local supplier in Zimbabwe is the one who has been doing all these configurations for me, however, the implementation is not that difficult. You can just use a manual to configure it. It's not much of a hassle. It's more like a plug-and-play solution. I am also using the wifi distribution access point. They are not a challenge at all. It took me less than five minutes.

It is very easy to deploy. The deployment time depends on the environment. A single device is a near instant. You just adopt it. Adding to an existing setup is quick.

Doing a whole new network with VLANs and whatnot takes longer, but adding to a configured network is very easy because you don't have to set up VLANs on the switch again.

I would rate my experience with the configuration an eight out of ten, with ten being easy.

We generally have to have a PoE switch when we've got VoIP phones on-site. I don't see that as a clear win. It's like we're buying a PoE switch no matter what brand they choose.

The difficulty of the initial setup depends on what purpose the solution has or how you want to set up the switch. If you limit it to the basic functionality, then the initial set up is quite simple. If you want to have something more advanced on the switch, then it's a bit tricky. Our team deployed the solution in about five days. You only need one person for deployment and maintenance.

The initial setup of this solution is quite straightforward. You just add the SSH key onto a Cloud controller, and from there you can do everything. Right from the first installation, I didn't need to check the manual.

I have been installing the Ubiquiti 8-port and 24-port, 500 Watt PoE switches, together with the access point. Most of the time, we don't just install the switch, but in combination with the access points.

The time for deployment depends on the configuration. If you are only setting up an access point then it is quite straightforward because it doesn't need to worry about VLAN. But, if you need multiple VLANs then it's going to take longer to configure. For example, if you're going to make one VLAN for somebody at home then it's no time at all. However, if you need to make ten or twenty VLANs then it's going to take you some time. I can't say how long, because again, it depends on the installation.
