Ubiquiti UniFi Switches Previous Solutions
Before using Ubiquiti UniFi Switches we were kind of a Netgear house. I'm Cisco licensed, but I don't like Cisco. I don't like Cisco engineers. They're kind of uppity. And so, I'm kind of an anti-Cisco guy. So, it was Netgear. And then, it was basically Ubiquiti.

Compared to Cisco, unless you're going to have tens of thousands of devices, or you have a budget that nobody cares about, Ubiquiti is much easier to set up. It's not like the smaller things like the Netgears and D-Links where you need a configuration for each device. If lightning takes out a site and you have to rebuild that site, you have to go and rebuild each device.
With Ubiquiti, I have a backup copy in the Cloud somewhere. I just download that, blast it onto the new controller, drop the new controller in, and replace any of the wiring that got burned and put in new access points. I can be back up and running in half an hour to two hours. It's amazingly easy because it's all centrally managed.

I'm also familiar with Meraki and Aruba, which are a bit more expensive, and may be better for larger setups. With Aruba, you do get better coverage than Meraki, however, it is on the more expensive side.

I have experience with switches from HPE.
My company chose to work with Ubiquiti UniFi Switches since it offers good reliability for its price.

View full review »I had experience with Cisco. If I had to compare the configuration process with Cisco enterprise switch and Ubiquiti UniFi Switches, I would always choose Ubiquiti UniFi Switches because of the UI experience. If I had to choose a data centre environment, I would choose Cisco or the HPE environment for switch-wise. They are capable of handling more load.
I previously used Cisco and Hewlett Packard and many types of switches throughout the years. Ubiquiti has a good graphical interface and it's easy to use. It's best suited to my needs.

We used to use Cisco switches but we had a lot of trouble with them. They are not easy to handle, which is why we switched to Ubiquiti. Cisco switches have the same capability but you have to have knowledge of Cisco IOS.
Ubiquiti is known for its access points, but the ER and ES switches are quite nice. We primarily use the Ubiquiti Edge switches and routers. The overall administration is very easy because we are able to write scripts in the same language that we use for our common operating systems. This was a great step forward from our Cisco solution.
The Cisco switches allow you do do everything because they are the standard-makers, but it is a closed community. If they don't do it then you can't do it, whereas with Ubiquiti, there is always somebody who is doing something crazy and you can get advice for your project. It is very nice.
With Cisco, normally after six years, they stop support and you have to buy completely new infrastructure. It is really awful.

The company previously has another solution but I wasn't involved with that. I was responsible for the company switching to UniFi.
We have used cheaper products like TP-Link. Ubiquiti is a better alternative. It is more advanced.
We previously used Alloy. We switched because Alloy was very hard to manage.

I have almost exclusively worked with Ubiquiti products.
I have their EdgeSwitch product line.
As IT support consultants, we work for a wide range of companies, some of which are quite large. I am sure they have a wide range of products available.
They are networking hardware, which I usually don't get involved in because I work on the software side.

The company was using the Ubiquiti Edge product initially, however, they transitioned to UniFi as they started to grow. The gentleman that made that decision is no longer here, therefore, I really don't know what the driving factor was, however, if I were to guess it had to do with the simplicity.

I've previously used other solutions, including Cisco, Brocade, and HP. We use all of these. It depends on what the client prefers or the budget of the project. There aren't big technical differences between any of these.

Prior to UniFi, we used a homegrown Unix environment. I upgraded it to use the UniFy because it seemed to be straightforward. I put in a 48-port power-over-ethernet switch that has the flexibility to handle VOIP and the other services that we need.
