OpenText UFT One Other Solutions Considered

One of the biggest reasons that UFT One was chosen from some others at the time was one of the big projects was bringing on a .NET desktop application to replace an old green screen app. So, we knew that we wanted the web, but we had no idea that we were ever going to have a mobile app. I don't think mobile was supported nine years ago, but we knew we wanted it for the desktop app and web. Obviously, if we were only doing web, then we could have chosen other less expensive things, but we really needed it to do that. We evaluated some other products at the time to determine what would interact well with it. UFT One, which was QTP at the time, won out. The inclusion of its integration with ALM Octane is a big deal for us because we can control a lot of things from there. It just pairs very well.

The results could be a tiny bit better for UFT One. I have gotten used to them, and they're good. However, I am starting to see other tools go further with test results, and there are some tools that have no test results so I probably shouldn't complain. I know that they have an answer for it, and I'm holding because I feel like it's going to change. The UFT One product by name still uses VBScript, which is a tried and true, but a pretty old language. Its API test counterpart does use C#, which is quite wonderful when I am ready to make the jump to UFT Developer. Then, I can also use C#. I shouldn't complain. It's just that the AI feature isn't in UFT Developer yet, and I have fallen in love with it. So, I'm not likely to change.

I attended training for Selenium and Tricentis Tosca. Selenium was more difficult because it lacked certain built-in features, unlike Micro Focus UFT One. Many people have said that the Tricentis Tosca license cost is high so, even though the tool is good, the cost must be taken into consideration. As a result of this, I recommended Micro Focus UFT One over Tricentis Tosca and Worksoft Certify to my client last year.

Against OpenText UFT One, my company considers a product named Tosca.

My company faces a challenge presently since we have got to do a migration by the end of the current year. One of the options that our company has in order to ensure that we do not lose the benefits of automation and regression testing is to delay the changes of tools in our company until the migration process is carried out.

It wasn’t involved in the decision to buy this product, but I would say the top vendors: IBM, CA, or Oracle.

I saw some products that are very simple. Ease of use is one of the best things and most important about HPE products.

Other products, for example, are less easy to use, but they work fine.

HP products sometimes have a lot of bugs to fix. You get in trouble sometimes because you want to adhere to some timelines, but then you find that the solution doesn't work. This is a mess for you. The issues of reliability and licensing are also very important, of course, when choosing a vendor.

There's actually two parts to this, because we use UFT for two different functions. For one of those functions, there really were no other vendors on a shortlist. For the other technology stack, we were looking at SmartBear. We were looking at Selenium, which we still use some. We were also looking at various open source tools. The reason we went for UFT specifically was because you could integrate API testing with client-server type testing, which was important to us.

When looking at a vendor, I look for stability first, but that's almost a prerequisite anyway. What is really important to me, and will be increasingly important to me, and I'm guessing, the majority of our customers or potential customers, is HPE's and their product’s ability to integrate with an ever diverging technology landscape. That's the difficult part.

I’ve evaluated a few different automation products. Only Selenium and CodedUI come close to the functionality and adaptability that UFT provides. I support UFT as the best solution due to the skill set needed to operate the tool. VBScript is verbose, but otherwise very easy for a non-coder to pick up. Selenium and CodedUI both require OOP languages that are more complex for the tester to pick up.

Overall my main concern, is with resources. There aren’t as many Selenium/CodedUI professionals in the marketplace therefore when it’s time to deal with turnover, it’s very difficult to find experienced automation personnel. That is not the case with UFT. An added plus for UFT is how it handles poorly designed and implemented web applications. I didn’t fully see this until I began to use CodedUI and Selenium.

There are a lot of tools available in the market, however, the primary advantageous feature identified in UFT One is simple: It supports legacy to modern technologies. This is why I propose UFT One.

Everybody is aware of mainframe systems because of Y2K. This solution supports a lot of terminal emulators that communicate and connect to mainframe systems. That is one of its key advantages. Some automation tools provide only a fewer number of terminal emulators, but UFT One supports a lot of terminal emulators to communicate with mainframes.

I have evaluated multiple paid and open source tools. I have evaluated paid tools like IBM Rational Functional Tester, TestComplete, Ranorex, Microsoft UI Automation, etc. Among these, HP UFT always tend to have better support for enterprise wide applications. However, if the requirement is to automate only a few applications, other tools can be considered. For web based application automation, Selenium WebDriver (open source) is the best automation tool.

I have certification in Tosca and UiPath.

Tosca is basically scriptless automation which is also good. UiPath is not technically for regression testing, it's an RPA tool. You don't have validations, per se; you have to create them. Because I have a longer period of association with UFT, and some of the other tools did not help me in some situations, I go with UFT.

This solution probably wouldn't be my first choice. I have used Silk Test and Selenium. Selenium would probably be my first choice due to the high ROI, reliability, being able to have a IDE choice and support of multiple languages.

A lot of people are moving away from the big intertools. So people look at products all the time, and every time the budget comes up or every time they tell me to cut expenses or every time they get frustrated with it, a lot of the small-time tools and open-source tools get attention. So I've been evaluating those.
