vCloud Director Initial Setup

You need to know what you're doing, like with all products. If you have everything checked and ready, an hour or an hour and a half for implementation is reasonable. It depends on preparation, like other products.

The initial setup was notably complex and challenging. We encountered difficulties in both initiating and operating the platform initially. We utilized vCenter for storage, but its performance was subpar, leading us to transition to a third-party storage solution. Since then, stability and performance have significantly improved. Although there may have been some initial setbacks, the platform has since caught up, providing satisfactory performance.

The initial setup is not that simple. One of the issues we faced in the beginning was that most of our devices were enrolled on legacy profiles, and we were advised to migrate to the enterprise.

However, because we have templates that are used in the hotel rooms and we have around 3000 tablets, it's not convenient for us to go into each room and reenroll the tablets to Android Enterprise. So, we have a lot of tablets still on legacy mode.

Usually, when there's an issue, the first thing that the engineers tell me is that legacy support is no longer in end-of-life and that I should move to enterprise. However, support for legacy mode is very limited.

We use SaaS, managed by VMware.

The initial setup of this solution is not easy. You need to use professional services to be effective. Unfortunately, the skill set for vCloud Director is not easily available, and it cannot be consumed straight out of the box.

Once deployed, we only require one person to spend twenty minutes a day on maintaining the product.

In the end, the initial setup was straightforward, but we had to try to do it a few times.

There seemed to be different bits of paperwork or instructions available from various places. We always had to go looking for what to do next. There didn't seem to be any type of integrated path on how to do the initial setup.

The initial setup is simple. The support for the deployment is very good. We were happy with the deployment, it is very simple and if you get team that is familiar with various solutions you can deploy very quickly.

In the older version, VMware supported NSX, but right now VMware provides NSX-T. NSX-T can connect your network, your VMware, your vCloud network to the SDN, and you can connect to other platforms. The initialization and the configuration in VMware is simple. We didn't have any issues.

The initial setup is quite straightforward with the new enhancements. It could be improved in terms of how the database's high availability is taken into account. They can still streamline the installation process but compared to when it was launched, it's much better now. With the recent availability of cloud provider hub and cloud foundation, I think deployment can be very easily done within a couple of days and that includes all the planning.

I wasn't part of initial set-up, but I believe it’s complex based on the senior engineer’s experience.

For example, right now the metrics to upgrade is complex, requiring certain elements. It’s very simple to use and train end-users. In our shop, we try to make them more self-sufficient, so a lot of knowledge transfer.
