I did trying to get the initial backups to run on for a SQL Server. It was stopping a service for some odd reason when trying to run the backup. Also had some speed issues due to running multiple jobs at once.

We only experienced minor issues with deployment mainly related to permission issue, as we strive to keep account permissions to a minimum. As far as the actual install of the application, and even upgrades, we have had no issues related to either. When we did experience issues, the support was outstanding.

We did run into a few issues of certain applications not being entirely compatible with Veeam, or requiring a bit of customization to our backup jobs to ensure they work correctly. This is mostly due to SQL express databases not allowing truncation during backup jobs, which isn’t necessary a fault with the Veeam software, but our implementation of other products in our environment

Deploying Veeam is as easy as you get. The installation is wizard-driven and will install any dependencies you may need that aren’t already installed. On the other hand, I have had some issues with scalability. Specifically, backing up large virtual file servers for me goes very slowly. Veeam has a concept of a backup proxy, which moves the resource load to whatever is designated as the proxy. This can be the local Veeam server or another physical or virtual server.

Some issues with backup proxies, but these issues were partly caused by the partner who installed Veeam. I just read the manual and took care of them myself. Can't blame Veeam for that.

It was mostly a smooth transition, but I would caution against using Veeam to back up a SQL 2000 database though, if anyone still has SQL 2000 databases in production. SQL 2000 databases do not acquiesce when snapshots are taken, and the entire SQL database can become corrupted. The SQL 2000 VM must be powered off before the VM backup. I learned that the hard way.

The only issues we encountered until v8 was the fact that we couldn't automate the patching and upgrading of our environment. Starting with v8, Veeam optimized their silent install procedure, and now we're working on automating the whole process of keeping the product up to date with major releases and patches.

Besides this we've only experienced minor setbacks, such as proxy servers not being able to upgrade or uninstall properly due to the older local installer/uninstaller kits being overwritten in time by constant updates.

Deployment of the software is very very simple and anyone can do it. Just a simple wizard to get started and you need not dedicate a server for this and any computer (physical/virtual) with good resources can handle this job. The install support documents are well elaborated and anyone who can read English and knows basics of computer networking can deploy this software in their Infrastructure.

If using off-site replication with WAN optimization, the initial Seed backups of VMs need to be taken locally and then transferred to off-site. Attempting to transfer these over the WAN can cause bandwidth saturation.
