Veeam Backup & Replication Pricing

Tommy Myo Min Aung - PeerSpot reviewer

Veeam Backup Replication has a lot of free features. We have a mixture of the paid versions as well as the community version. They are really helpful to us.

We have approximately 200 instances of Veeam Backup Replication with paid licenses and we use the community edition for the small offices.

Our license is about 200K for three years. It includes everything. It includes support and it includes the Office 365 Backup as well for the whole environment. We have about 6,000 mailboxes to back up.

For Veeam it's a pretty standard license. We made a tender because we are a kind of public organization so I have to make it on the tender, but that's the reason there is no cost for the hardware that I need to power the Veeam infrastructure.

It is more cost-effective than some of the other solutions, but a lot of that comes down to the fact that we're a reseller. So, depending upon the deal, we do negotiate different price points for different customers. The price varies depending upon the size of the customer, the size of the deal, and the discounts we can negotiate.

I would give it an eight. The only problem we face is when our support expires, and we need to renew. If we're purchasing a new license, that's when difficulties arise.

There are no additional costs or hidden fees. It's a straightforward pricing structure.

Although our license includes support, we have only really used the support when we were using Veeam for Active Directory. The rest of the time, we find Veeam easy enough to use without paying extra support fees. We are technology-aware people and experienced with this kind of technology, so we opted for the perpetual license. We mainly go with perpetual licensing with our various vendors (including hardware vendors) such as VMware, NetBackup, and so on.

This is an expensive product, so reducing the cost would be an improvement. The difference between IBM and Veeam Backup & Replication is insignificant.

Veeam Backup & Replication is not so cheap. Nothing is cheap now in the market. But, it is very good and reasonable considering the integrated features. You can give it an eight out of 10 on the price.

There are different licensing models. Nowadays, I think you want to focus on the number of instances. They stopped the previous license, Charisma. You want to go by the number of instances licensing .

We have many different types of licenses. COMMUNITY EDITION ,VEEAM BACKUP & REPLICATION and VEEAM AVAILABILITY SUITE which will include all the advanced option including VEEAM ONE

You can get Veaam ONE embedded  which will be cheaper, but few customers are actually going for this because, Veaam ONE is a complete monitoring and reporting solution it is not dedicated for Veaam backup solution. You can use it for monitoring the data center virilization solitons including VMware , MS Hyper-V  , Veaam one has a very powerful monitoring and reporting engine .

The changes in pricing have been an interesting aspect. It seems to have become pricier, resulting in a reduction in affordability. There are extra expenses involved, including hardware requirements and the procurement of operating system licenses, which must also be taken into account.

Compared to other enterprise solutions, Veeam Backup & Replication generally offers a competitive price point. However, there has been a noticeable and concerning increase in pricing, particularly in the year 2023. The rate of price hikes has been significant, with prices escalating three times during the first quarter of the year. This trend indicates a substantial shift in the pricing structure, which may have implications for customers and their budgeting considerations.

The pricing model of Veeam Backup & Replication differs from other vendors in the industry. While many backup vendors base their pricing on the amount of storage in terabytes, Veeam opts for a server-based pricing approach. This server-based pricing has traditionally been more appealing to end customers, offering a simpler and more straightforward cost structure. However, as Veeam continues to grow and expand, it is encountering challenges in managing costs with this pricing model. From our company's perspective, the terabyte-based pricing model is more convenient and preferable.

There are not any additional costs other than the standard licensing fees.

In terms of pricing, our marketing department handles that. I don't really deal with that area. However, I can say that I would assume that the solution is competitive or else we would not be using the product.

I'd advise those considering the solution to first make sure they take the vendor training and get at least one or two on the team up to speed from people that know the product. Then, use them to cross-train the rest of your staff.

Veeam's pricing typically is extremely competitive. Rarely do we see it higher than the competitors'. With their new licensing model that they have put into place, they have really made it extremely affordable for a lot of my small towns who have to go to the town hall or police departments and request money. You've got the chief basically running the IT and running the police department. They look at things differently as they're not IT people necessarily that we're working with. Therefore, when they see pricing on technologies, it's even harder for them to justify the spend. However, Veeam has done a really good job at really staying competitive. I would say that they're definitely the strongest from a pricing perspective.

In terms of extra costs above licensing, if someone decides to use the cloud, that would be considered an operational cost. Then, of course, whoever the IT staff is, there's got to be some level of maintenance and provisioning and configuring and so forth of users. There's the head count too that goes with supporting Veeam.

The price is great. It's software related, and I know that might be a good thing because it's a cheap solution to buy and we have been looking for a program for backup and they fit the bill. The price of Veeam and its software related products enable you to have your own hardware. You can use your own infrastructure and you can actually buy what you want. This is cost-effective. It might be that if you buy something else and they have media things it's very expensive but it works very well. If your company has pressure to actually get back data very quickly, it might not be possible with this solution. Our college environment doesn't seem to have this problem. There has not been much down time but I think if the server is broken, it just restores within an hour and everything returns back to normal.

Veeam Backup Replication can be quite expensive for Office 365 because its license is per user and not for the space that you use. You need one license for each user. If the user only uses a few files on one hard drive, you need a license to back up these files. It was better to have a license model, such as in the Cohesity solution. Cohesity has a license for a space that you use. It's more useful in this case because the license for backup data is on-premises is for CPU. The license is based on how many CPUs you have but it does not depend on how many users use the CPU.

Licensing is based on CPU socket of the host servers and if you get the enterprise versions you also get support for file, SQL and Exchange granularity so there is nothing else left to buy. Most other products either require individual licenses for these advanced features or are licensed for the amount of data you have so in either of those cases your costs will rise as your data grows. With Veeam, provided you don’t add more servers, the license cost remains flat.

We pay a yearly licensing fee.

We've found the pricing to be very reasonable. It's not overly expensive.

There are different tiers available, including Standard, Enterprise, and Enterprise Plus. We have the standard license.

We currently have ten to 15 different licenses. I can't speak to the exact details as it's mostly handled by the IT operations team.

Beyond the licensing, the only cost which we have incurred, which was a little too much, was the training. In our company, people need to be certified as we basically go for internal competence and upscaling our people, as a team. However, Veeam certifications are costly. That is one thing that was a little bit of a pain point for us.

It's a proper price, as it isn't an issue for what Veeam Backup & Replication is giving us. Obviously, we are paying licensing for our physical VMware environment. It also depends on how the VMware environment is on the side. We have a few very big nodes. Actually, the most important criteria for us when considering a solution is service. When we are taking a decision regarding the hardware or software or any applications, then first we need to tell where and what the services they are giving us. Then we evaluate the service level element.

The main important criteria when selecting a vendor are then what are the features and services available in the devices or applications. This should be our main selection path to select any hardware devices or applications.

Because of our world, in the market, we can get low prices on devices or we could then see what is available. What I actually need is what I need to deploy, the features I need to be deploying in my architecture. That needs to be considered first in systems administration because the price can vary.

In my personal experience, these values and features should be the first standard for selecting a device or application.

The only issue I have is having three NetApp filers and not being able to backup/restore from snapshots, SnapMirror, or SnapVault. The Veeam Universal License, VUL, is one of the ways that you can license the product. I believe it is now the only way that you can license the product. It really facilitates the product and makes it easy to get a good calculation of the sizing of your environment, and it is a good metric for you to license the product. It's very flexible. The Veeam B&R licensing model is very straightforward – it is licensed per-CPU socket of virtualisation host system. This provides a predictable cost model, and avoids the often crippling “virtual machine tax” that capacity–based or agent/system-based licensing structures can impose. It is also recommended to consider Veeam's bundled offers, such as the Availability Suite or procuring additional maintenance/support upfront.
