Our preliminary focus is restoring user folders, or email data backed up to the tapes. It is easy to set up and use for daily processes and a good solution for preserving crucial data.

The product allows for versatile storage options, enabling users to store data on disk storage, NAS storage, or tape libraries. Notably, it integrates well with tape libraries, including Tableaux libraries, a feature significantly improved in recent versions.

Compression and deduplication are the critical features of Veritas Backup Exec that we find most essential for our operations. However, many users prefer to access these features through hardware appliances rather than software solutions. This preference stems from the high resource utilization of software-based backups, which often require significant amounts of RAM and processing power. Consequently, deploying software-based backups may necessitate provisioning a large bare-metal machine. In contrast, hardware appliances don't need extensive appliances.

Veeam provides better ease of management than Veritas. However, Veritas has a good graphical user interface that is easy to learn.

However, those with customer experience prefer Veeam's user interface (UI) for database management. However, while it may initially seem challenging, the UI of Veritas is straightforward and user-friendly, especially for technical users.

I rate the product a seven out of ten.

I give the solution a six out of ten.

We currently have over one hundred people using the solution including L1, L2, and L3.

A single team is required for maintenance. A team of 10 people on multiple scales is managing that particular customer, not only specific to Exchange or specific to any backup or specific to any Windows operating system. We have a team of people with multi skills, looking at starting load balance, SQL, and data works like that.

The interface is intuitive and the documentation is good.

The solution is integrated with the Microsoft SQL database.

Veritas Backup Exec is a good solution. It can take a little time to get used to the GUI, but once you've understood how it works, it's really great to use. You can quickly do what you want to do, or get the information you want.

We have options for disaster recovery. Some customers lack another branch or a secondary site. In such cases, we can install additional backup software at our site, enabling application recovery. This setup facilitates extensive testing at headquarters. You can restore from the secondary site or utilize cloud services. The backup jobs can be directed to cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure or Amazon Computers.

We have a partnership with Dell EMC. Dell EMC offers a backup appliance, and we can integrate Backup Exec into the backup software. However, we still need a Veritas backup appliance. The duplication ratio is 4x, but in terms of data demand, it's up to 36. Most backup software already has certification, but it's limited to 4-6x identification issues. However, in the case of a backup appliance, it's running up to 36 applications. If the customer doesn't have backup storage or backup protection for three servers, we can use duplication from Backup Exec.

SAP HANA Is limited in its capabilities. I recommend going with NetApp. NetApp is designed for enterprise applications like SAP HANA. It does backup and is well positioned for small and medium companies like Microsoft, including SharePoint and file servers. Customers have certifications like Microsoft 365 and Salesforce on the cloud.

Overall, I rate the solution a 9 out of 10.

OEM has always been a data company. They've always wanted to protect data. The methodology, the idea, or the concept behind the Backup Exec application is that you can back up and restore your data, and you can go to sleep. There are other newer solutions on the market. Of course, they also do the job, but when it comes to working in a simple manner, Backup Exec does the job well. So, one should not just say that Backup Exec is a product that has been around for a long time, and it is not modern. Backup Exec is very modern, very fresh. You should at least try it out before you make any decisions.

Better architects should be there to create the backup systems. Dedicated backup servers, dedicated switches, and separate networks would be good. Resume option for failed JOB.

We are resellers.

We use the latest versions to ensure we get support as older versions often lose support.

I'd advise potential new users to read the manual well and don't just go next, next, finish, et cetera. Read everything well to understand the options they are providing. I've seen many people fail to understand what options are offered or what the customer needs. If you don't do the right configuration, it becomes faulty. It slows down the process if it's not configured right. 

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.

The product is good. If the organization is considering Veritas Backup, and they want to do a file-level backup on a tape, in a small environment, then definitely Backup Exec is the perfect solution. If the organization is looking for backup and disaster recovery, replication and the like, Veeam Backup & Replication would be preferred.

For customers, the main point is to make sure that the skill of the solution is readily available in the county. That's the reason why it is an easy product to adopt or to onboard in your environment, especially here in South Africa.

On a scale of one to ten, I'll give Veritas Backup Exec a nine out of 10. It's just one point I'm taking off because of those two small issues. We feel that the competition is using it against Veritas.

I would advise that it's not important which product you use because I think most of the products are good quality and nowadays have at least a standard because of technological enhancements, but it's more important to understand the concept of back-up and recovery. For example, how many jobs are needed, what is your infrastructure, what storage do you need, things like that. Having knowledge of data and back-up recovery is more important than the actual solution.

It's not important which tools you use, because nowadays all the solutions, for example, Veeam, are good. It's better to know what you want and to have good knowledge of back-up and recovery concepts, for example, storage, data, data growth, SQL, etc.

We're currently considering looking for a new solution. We want to see what is out there. This product is also quite expensive.

Having a reliable backup is essential to your company. For example, we were using this product to back up one of our servers that got the CryptoLocker virus. We were able to go back and restore it to just a few hours previous to the attack and we were able to get everybody right back up and running within a day, in less than a day's time. It absolutely could have just spread right through the whole environment had we not caught it. This solution gave us the ability to be able to get back up with minimal data loss.

Overall, I would rate the solution at an eight out of ten. If they were able to take out some of the bugs we have found I'd rate it higher.

We're a reseller of this solution. We also use an on-premises version in our offices.

It is the most preferred backup solution for data protection for our customers. 

We use it ourselves for our production environment backup. Whoever is accessing our server, whoever is accessing the sources, is using it. It's mandatory for our organization to understand the product. Everyone including the sales team, the pre-sales, the technical guys,  etc., everybody knows the product.

If you are looking for a safe and reliable solution, I would recommend it. If you're looking for something new, or something sleeker or more simplified which will give you more flexibility, I would recommend a Google product. 

In this solution, you have a lot of features. You can use it as secondary storage. You can use it for a backup that's more granular. Like Veeam, you can recover items from the database.

It would be good to add more features, like APIs.

I have suggested this solution to four of five people. For big companies, with more than fifty people, I recommend this product completely. However, for companies with less than fifty people, I don't suggest it.

For the installation, you need at least two servers and a tape librarian. This is a good enterprise-level solution.

It has good replication, and it is better than other products. It is good for backing up not only VMs but also clients. It is also good for SQL Server and NDMP data servers.

I would recommend this solution for a company with around 15 computers. When we tried to increase its usage to 17 computers, it was very slow. We plan to keep using this solution for now. Later on, if we find something more scalable, we will switch to that.

My advice to anyone considering this product would be to know how many servers have to be covered and the complexity of the environment as well as the capabilities of Backup Exec. Veritas cannot handle a complex environment very well. It is really only designed for a simple environment.  

On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best, I can rate Veritas Backup Exec as somewhere around eight. It has some very good capabilities but limitations with system complexity, user-friendliness, and depth of reporting.

For our internal purposes, Veritas Backup Exec is very good, but for disaster recovery, you should go with another product. 

Nowadays, everything is going on the cloud and the backup solutions should also be also fast. A lot of things we are maintaining now require professional disaster recovery services. With Veritas, an internal alert problem is happening for all the windows which should be somewhat decreased. Then it would be better and more user-friendly.

I am giving Veritas Backup Exec an 8 out of 10. The Backup Exec software is very good but should be updated with new features.

We were a distributor, however, we did not sell enough and therefore the contract ended. 

Ultimately, the product had to have more presence on the ground. A good example of that would be Microsoft or, if you want, Kaspersky. They have the representatives here, and the representatives used to go to see the customer. 

They have many QBA with their distributor, and so they helped us promote the solution. It's very difficult to promote the solution. I was alone in the company trying to sell the solution, and I know that there were some representatives on the ground, yet they never spoke with us. Even if you asked them for a quote or something else, they never answered you or they answered very late. With so much time passing, it became more and more difficult for us to sell the solution. There was competition from, for example, Veam, which had people on the ground and able to help customers. We just never got the same level of local support for this product and it never worked out for us.

I'd rate it at an eight out of ten, as it is a good product in general, however, selling it effectively proved to be difficult.

The solution is a bit expensive. The trade magazines seem to imply that you can do a virtual environment for almost the same price, which would be better.

Overall, I would rate the solution at a seven out of ten. It's okay. It could be better in a variety of ways.

If you're seriously looking at Backup Exec, take a hard look at their licensing model and compare that. Also, experience their tech support before you jump in.

Right now, the two big hitters are Backup Exec and Veeam. But the document that I've downloaded now from IT Central Station has introduced me to other vendors that I also need to take a look at.

In looking for a vendor to go with, the important criteria for me are:

• cost
• ease of use
• options, especially trial-based options.

The current version that I'm at, and I have to base my rating on it because it's the only one that I've been using, I would give it a seven out of 10 because it doesn't have the cloud options, the licensing has gotten worse instead of better, and technical support is iffy at best. I'm using version 16.0.

We are using the solution for mid-range customers or customers that have a very small infrastructure setup.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten. Overall, we've had a great experience with its capabilities. 

I'd recommend the solution to others. Of course, it needs to be as per the customer requirements. In many environments, we are currently recommending the NetApp Backup or this Backup Exec. It's completely dependent on the customer environment.

You should have the right skill set because these are complex projects. If you have the right skill set and the right partner with you, it is easy to implement. You should check that the partner or the team you are engaging for this project is technically certified and experienced to handle such a project.

Choosing a backup and recovery system is something that depends on the size of the resources in your environment.

Rating this product is tough because I have had problems with the integration. In this context, I would rate this solution a six out of ten. However, the solution is good and if I were using a new installation, I would rate it an eight out of ten.

We do the integration of the solution. 

At present, there is only one user, a backup administrator, making use of the solution. 

One of our customers in New York City made preparations for a DR site, but the project they had planned for this year was delayed by a year or two owing to COVID-19. It seems to me that the customer likely needed the same solution in the DR site.

Veritas Backup Exec is an SMB solution, so for an SMB customer that does not have a Unix environment, I would recommend this product. However, for larger enterprise customers, I would recommend another product such as Veritas NetBackup.

All of the features that I can wish for are already in there. The interface, dashboard, and pricing are all perfect.

My advice to anybody who is implementing this product is to read the admin guide. It is important to look at the prerequisites, such as the operating system version. Find out whether you satisfy the minimum requirements for compatibility.

Depending on the size of the data being backed up, it can take a couple of hours to complete.

This is a solution that keeps evolving with technology. They know the trend of cyber attacks, so Veritas try as much as possible to build up their backup solution to combat whatever attack is in trend. They recently sent me a document that shows that their data protection can mitigate against ransomware. This is good for enterprise clients because it shows that they are thinking of their customers.

A lot of organizations today are afraid of ransomware, and Veritas is ensuring that they are strengthening their data protection to combat or mitigate such attacks. It is something that any enterprise needs to embrace.

I have used other data protection solutions and I see Veritas as one of the best in the market. This solution also has options, such as granular restore, that are not available in other products.

We are very happy with Veritas, and we work with them consistently for our servicing. We are a reseller, and we have been their Value Added Reseller of the Year three times. 

This solution has been good for us. We have had good support. It is very stable, and it works for our customers. Only the reporting feature needs to be fixed.

We use the on-premises version of the solution.

For what we need, for how we're using the solution, it does what it's supposed to do.

If I were to give advice about the product to others, I would say that it's a very simple solution and it does pretty much what it's supposed to do. We haven't had any problems with it for the past six or seven years.

I would rate the solution at nine out of ten. It's helped us tremendously over the years in locating all kinds of issues that we had on the network. It also finds any issues very quickly. I would recommend it.

We used the on-premise version of the solution.

The dashboard was good. I loved to see the maintenance dashboard every time I logged on. That was my first screen because it always gave me a reminder of how many days before my next renewal. 

I have evaluated the solution against other applications, and it is quite stable, but if you want to compare it to what other applications are offering, then I would say that I would hesitate if I have to make that recommendation that others should use it.
