What is most valuable?

One nice feature with Backup Exec is mainly that disaster can happen to any server and the disk image can be destroyed very easily. It's also easy to fully email the… more»

How has it helped my organization?

Veritas Backup Exec has enabled us to save costs.

What needs improvement?

A lot of backup solutions are coming out now and a lot of new disaster recovery software is coming. We should see an updated cycle in six months or one year. Veritas… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

For Backup Exec usage, the client uses the software with us because we have a license for this product. The license availability we have is for ten years. Licensing is… more»

If you previously used a different solution, which one did you use and why did you switch?

We were also using Symantec Enterprise Vault.

What other advice do I have?

For our internal purposes, Veritas Backup Exec is very good, but for disaster recovery, you should go with another product. Nowadays, everything is going on the cloud and… more»

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

This solution we are using now is only for the data backups. The last data recovery we were on had different features and functionality. Disaster recovery is only part of… more»

How has it helped my organization?

I'm very familiar with it because I've been using it since we, as an organization, started using it. I'm very familiar with the software package itself and how to set alerts, how to know what's going on, how to recover stuff. So familiarity is probably the best thing for me right now. How does it… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would like to see a better licensing model. They changed it and it's just horrendous.

What other advice do I have?

If you're seriously looking at Backup Exec, take a hard look at their licensing model and compare that. Also, experience their tech support before you jump in. Right now, the two big hitters are Backup Exec and Veeam. But the document that I've downloaded now from IT Central Station has introduced… more»

What is most valuable?

Backup Exec 2012 R2 is a very good product for the Windows file system and SQL backups. It is very user-friendly, but the next version Backup Exec 2014 that is released… more»

How has it helped my organization?

As I mentioned earlier, if we have an environment which has only a file system and SQL backups, then it is a good product, i.e., only for small environments. However, for… more»

What needs improvement?

Firstly, the GUI for 2014 is mostly confusing, i.e., if you need to add any additional technical features, then it doesn't require a change to the GUI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is cheap compared to the other backup technologies. It all depends on the requirements.

If you previously used a different solution, which one did you use and why did you switch?

I have worked on multiple backup solutions as I have worked in the backup-shared domain.

What other advice do I have?

Before implementing any backup solution, you need to understand your environment, as well as the requirements, and based on that you need to choose the product. If you are… more»

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have worked on this product, so I am just sharing my experience on this. I have worked on multiple backup products, such as Veritas NetBackup and EMC Legato NetWorker.

What is most valuable?

One of the valuable features is the instant recovery for VMs. It reduces the RTO (Recovery Time Objective) drastically.

How has it helped my organization?

One of the latest improvements is the Azure Cloud connector integration.

What needs improvement?

There still a lot of room for improvement in synthetic technologies, especially when targeted to deduplication media. Backup Exec does not support any technology similar… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Make sure you verify the V-RAY Extension when licensing your virtual environment. Depending on the scenario, it can cost less than half of the price of other methods.

If you previously used a different solution, which one did you use and why did you switch?

I have worked with many other vendors. They all have some strong and weak points.

What other advice do I have?

Try the cloud connectors. They can become a replacement for long retention tapes in some cases.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Our customers, who have chosen Backup Exec, normally evaluate Veeam or ArcServe.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are that it is user-friendly. It also works nicely with Windows and Skype. In addition, there are nice backup features.

How has it helped my organization?

It's a nice alternate solution for backup.

What needs improvement?

First, it would be nice to improve the cloud. Second, it would be nice to improve the backup acceleration and the fast restoration required. This solution just doesn't meet my business needs for backup plans. Lastly, the reporting needs improvement. Backup Exec does not have the strong art of… more»

What other advice do I have?

In the global business world, Veritas has a very good name. I think they have a good solid product, and they are always trying to improve and update it. They know what the client actually needs, and they are up to the challenge of satisfying those needs.

What is most valuable?

* The backup solution comes in different versions to support different platforms. * Deployment is a pain, but once the setup is done, it works like a charm. * One of the most stable backup solutions.

How has it helped my organization?

It is not a recommended software when it comes to large environments where there has to be a minimal Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and/or Recover Point Objective (RPO).

What needs improvement?

Enhanced support for cloud backup needs to be added. However, offsite backup to the cloud can be done. The recovery success rate is not very convincing.

What other advice do I have?

I was previously an ADV engineer at Veritas. I have witnessed different types of users utilizing the product.
