We are not using the latest version of the product. The NetBackup version we are using is 8.0. We use a NetBackup Appliance. The NetBackup version is a bit older as it's integrated with the backup appliance. That's why we cannot upgrade to the latest version. The latest version is 9.0.
I would warn other potential users that, in my experience, it's a bit complex and may be difficult to achieve some requirements compared to other products. Rubrik or Cohesity may be a bit easier, for example. It's a little bit traditional in terms of architecture. However, the features compared to others are really quite amazing.
In general, I would rate the product at a seven out of ten.
Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.

I would rate Veritas NetBackup ten out of ten.
We are a team of three people who handle all the backups for our organization using Veritas NetBackup.
We have two sites, the main one being NDR. We are backing up all critical systems, and uncritical systems are also rotated into the backup schedule. As a critical telecom company, we back up all billing and charging systems, as well as switches. We do file-based backups, but there are some systems that cannot integrate with any backup solution, such as Ericsson. For these systems, we dump the backup file and then take it to Veritas where we back up using a secret application to the appliance and NFS.
For an enterprise company, two professionals are enough for the maintenance of Veritas NetBackup.
I recommend Veritas NetBackup for enterprise companies.
I have vast experience with backup solutions and Veritas NetBackup is the best solution out there.
View full review »Veritas NetBackup has significantly streamlined our backup and recovery processes by providing a single pane of view across various environments. Its enterprise-scale capabilities enable seamless support for diverse workloads, including MongoDB, Cassandra, and other critical components. It supports our disaster recovery strategy by automating verification between the primary and DR data sites.
The most beneficial features of Veritas NetBackup for our data protection needs include the native accelerator feature, which significantly reduces our backup windows. The integration with hardware provider snapshots allows us to achieve even shorter backup windows.
The application and compression capabilities have significantly impacted our storage efficiency by managing around 30 devices, including NetBackup and Flex appliances. The deduplication ratio between NetBackup and Data Domain ranges from approximately 13:1 to 17:1.
The deduplication and the accelerated functions have tremendously improved our IT operations. A 65-terabyte database, which previously took 14 days to process, has now been reduced to a significantly shorter duration of three days.
Its support for various modern workloads has been crucial as our company evolves its applications and embraces modern languages. It ensures a consistent and efficient data protection strategy across legacy and contemporary workloads.
We can also transition the license from client- and client-server-based to a front-end terabyte model, in which deduplication plays a crucial role.
I recommend it to others and rate it an eight out of ten.

For a recommendation, I absolutely recommend it as the best product that I know for the backup world, and why I'm saying it's the best is because it's very, very responsive, and very scalable. And personally, I have had good experiences with the support, and also I'm very familiar with Veritas. But mostly, it's because you can back up your environment safely with Veritas NetBackup.
The best way to use the solution is with commands since they have roots in Linux. The current web interface is still outdated, and you cannot do many things in the web interface that you can do with the command line.
If you don't have a strong knowledge of the solution, it will be hard to manage.
Otherwise, the product is very versatile and scalable that allows you to back up your environments easily, and I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.

I honestly don't feel that Veritas NetBackup is forward-thinking. There are a lot better options to implement at this point. I would not suggest Veritas NetBackup to anyone at this point. It is not being managed properly.
Veritas needs to come out with a completely new product and break away from the old. They've basically been continuing to update the same product since the eighties. It is time for them to more or less move to a more forward-thinking. They need to be more in-line with how the environments work today. It has outlived its usefulness in all honesty. They would honestly be better off by re-inventing Veritas NetBackup than trying to fix what's broken.
I would rate Veritas NetBackup a three out of ten.

After uploading servers and applications to the Veritas NetBackup application, we schedule backups to run when our applications are least active, ensuring that resources are available for the backup process. Additionally, we perform quarterly restores to validate the integrity of our backups, ensuring that all data backed up in each month of the quarter can be successfully restored.
We have backups in three different environments. We have a retention policy for our backups, typically set to three months. We also have a policy to archive the backups to our library. Even after the three-month retention on the media server, we keep a copy in our ADAP environment, which retains data for longer.
Recently, we encountered an issue where most of our DR environment went offline, resulting in the loss of several servers. Fortunately, we had the catalog from Veritas NetBackup, which allowed us to restore our environment quickly. Instead of reinstalling everything from scratch, we could pick up where we left off by restoring the backups in different environments.
New users can search for the product online, read what they want to do, and do it on their own. I rate it a nine out of ten.

My advice to anyone considering Veritas NetBackup is to validate. If you have multiple sites, it's better to have the setup. If you have multiple sites that are running a tape library and media servers, you can set up one master server. But if you only have one site, you can set up a backup as a media server and a master server. If you have multiple sites, you want to look at how many sites you are backing up. If it's multiple sites, then you want to set them up with one master server.
If you only have one site, then you have the media server and the master, and it does both. That would be my suggestion - to validate if there is more than one site you're going to be backing up. If you are going to be backing up more than one site, you want to properly set up the first time. If you only have one site you're backing up, set it up as a master media. If you have multiple sites to set up, you want to set them up as media servers and then set up one master server that controls all the functions for the remaining sites. That is really the biggest thing, to be honest with you.
You might want to confirm if it supports backing up to Azure or AWS. Some people want to do long-term archiving. You want to confirm whether or not NetBackup supports backup to Azure or Google Cloud or AWS from a long-term archiving perspective.
Some people backup to tape. Some people are going to say that you can't back up the disk with NetBackup. I just don't know if it supports backing up to cloud providers.
On a scale of one to ten, I'd say NetBackup is an eight. It's pretty strong. I don't have other problems. I would say it's definitely a strong eight. It's a pretty good product.

Before you decide, I would advise going for the right model because there are different types of licensing available. It is available on a Platform-based which is a capacity-based model, by the number of clients who are using it, and a Tradition model.
Managing the server becomes very complex, and you should do the software compliance.
Also, once the backup for the databases is configured, enable data compression at the source to reduce the amount of data that travels across the network.
I would rate Veritas NetBackup a nine out of ten.

About seven or eight years back, Veritas and Commvault were considered the de facto leaders in the backup landscape. During that time, there were no major alternatives such as Veeam, and many customers relied solely on Veritas and were loyal to the product.
But nowadays, new customers have options, especially when it comes to smaller scale backup solutions for the small-medium type of companies. With us, we now see a multitude of different clients, from small companies to the enterprise.
The average company that is using multiple virtualization platforms, or physical platforms running Unix systems, will typically go with Veritas NetBackup rather than Veeam because Veeam is still in its infancy period when it comes to supporting these kinds of platforms. However, it does depend on the environment. Some of the smaller clients that we see will only have 4-5 VMs, and in that situation NetBackup typically won't be a good match because it's oriented towards a more sophisticated environment, especially concerning licensing.
When we do pre-sales with our customers, we tell them that they need to have back-to-back support from their executives, and we always teach them to allocate their reports to the OPEX budget, because they will need to have at least the latest supported version at all times running alongside their production servers. Unfortunately, somehow, there are always one or two customers who are still using unsupported machines.

The solution I most recently used was Veritas NetBackup, and I'm still using it, particularly version 9.0. Currently, I use it for myself, e.g. for company purposes, but I did previously work as a service provider, so I used to support this solution.
I don't remember exactly how long the deployment of Veritas NetBackup took, e.g. it could have been 1 week, because it was set up in a big environment. I had to set it up step by step, and it was not that simple. I had to do it one step at a time.
We have 1,500 to 2,000 staff, and all their data is protected by Veritas NetBackup. Though they're not directly involved with this solution, e.g. they're not handling or managing it, they have some protection through it.
My advice to other people who are thinking of implementing this solution is that if they'll use it in a large-scale environment, it's very simple and it will serve its purpose, e.g. improving the man hours and improving finances.

We might continue to use Veritas if they can provide a parallel solution, a cluster solution, or a cloud solution to back up our data more quickly. Otherwise, we will switch to another vendor.
I would rate Veritas NetBackup a nine out of ten.

I rate NetBackup nine out of 10. If you're implementing it, I wouldn't recommend installing the media server on a VMware environment. I would also suggest getting some limitations for a LAN-free backup.

Information Technology Infrastructure Team Lead at a tech services company with 5,001-10,000 employees
I have a lot of experience with it and I have a lot of experience with Veeam. I think that the only weakness with Veritas is the user interface. It's not friendly and it's not easy to understand.
For functionality in protecting the data, it has all of the requirements to protect any workload on the virtual machines.
It's the best solution in the market right now.
If you are considering Veritas, you should have a qualified team that is trained in using NetBackup. If the team does not have the required experience, they will find it difficult and they will think that it an issue with the product.
It is a good product as long as you have a good team to manage it at each stage.
I would rate Veritas NetBackup a seven out of ten.

We're Veritas partners, however, we are independent and completely neutral towards our partners. I'm a consultant. I don't use the product. I evaluate the product for clients. The clients are the ones who use the product.
I'd advise other organizations to look at both their on-prem and cloud together. It's good to manage everything from one place.
I'd rate the solution eight out for ten.
