Veritas NetBackup Scalability
There is a big change in Veritas. In the past, we could easily change servers or appliances and continue working by restoring the catalog. We could change servers from Linux to Linux or Linux to Solaris and perform catalog restores to continue working. But with the new version, we are forced to engage Veritas' professional services, which is too expensive. Sometimes, we've received quotes exceeding $100,000 for a catalog migration.
This expense was unnecessary in the past. For instance, we used to install a new release of Linux and simply restore the catalog, and the system would function well. But with the latest version, it's no longer feasible.
For instance, if we want to migrate from appliance 5030 to 5060 or even just 5050, we are compelled to engage Veritas consultants due to the intricate data manipulation involved. This additional expense is quite expensive. In the past, these devices didn't even exist, and we could easily restore the catalog, resulting in a fully functional system. However, the new version demands expensive expertise for such tasks, which I find unacceptable for our clients.

The scalability of the product is very good. A company can scale it with relative ease if it needs to.

It is easy to scale to fit our data environment when our data starts growing.
We started with one, then we ended up with three now running in production, and we scaled all three of them.

You have two agents, one on the server-side and the other on the client side. For the server-side, the product is licensed using Front-End Terabytes. You must buy more Front-End Terabytes licenses for the server to scale, allowing a higher quantity of backup data. On the client side, it is easy to scale, you can add all clients as you wish. Using Windows Server or Linux Server, if you want to back up databases, such as Oracle SQL Server, or if you want to back up applications, such as SAP or Exchange, it can be done.

View full review »Price is a major issue with scalability. In big environments with lots of servers, this product is quite expensive. When a single backup environment gets large, the backup catalog gets large and then your catalog backups for DR production begin to take a very long time. The database performance begins to suffer. You can add different functionality with the servers. You can scale it to different sites if you need to implement the different sites and then configure replications between sites.
You can also migrate from one server to another server. If your hardware is not sufficient or if you need to refresh your hardware.
It gives you the flexibility to migrate all of the data to new hardware and to change from a single server to a cluster. You can also change from one server to an appliance.
