Easy to manage with a simple user interface but needs better local support

Pros and Cons

  • "The user interface is very easy to navigate."
  • "The local support could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We do a lot of backups daily, and mainly we just keep the operating system images. We do take database and active directory backups as well. We handle all types of backups using this product.

What is most valuable?

The user interface is very easy to navigate. The interface itself is very simple.

Overall, it is doing the job we need it to do.

It supports whatever line types and support types and systems we have. It supports all types of backup systems quite easily.

The stability has been very good so far. We haven't had any problems with it.

The product is easy to manage.

What needs improvement?

The local support could be improved. Right now, it's something about the solution that is lacking.

They should offer better partners that can help us implement the solution in a better way.

It would be ideal if they offered editing or activating options.

I don't know how good it is with the virtual environment. I have not tried the product with VMware, for example.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about six years at this point. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We've never had any issues with stability. It doesn't crash or freeze. There are no bugs or glitches. It's pretty reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are still running with a single server, and it's a per server per instance-based license model. If we need to add our first storage-based model or another division, we cannot support both. It's a licensing model issue.

How are customer service and technical support?

The local support is lacking overall. It's something they need to really work on improving.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have worked with Veritas and IBM in the past, however, that was a very long time ago. I wouldn't be able to compare them to this solution as too much time has passed and much has changed. We used those solutions maybe ten or so years ago now.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not easy or difficult. It's moderate, or somewhere in the middle. I wouldn't describe the implementation as complex, however.

The deployment too more than expected, as the vendor involved was having some staffing issues. The engineers were changing and we had some technical requirements which we realized at a later stage.

Maintenance isn't required very often, however, we have to ensure it is up-to-date. We also have to ensure whenever anything changes, we have to properly add them to the Commvault - whether they are new servers or new clients. Whenever we change our backup library or the memory storage, we have to reconfigure things. In that regard, there is occasional maintenance, depending on our background changes.

We only need one person to manage the solution. It doesn't take a lot of staff. Typically, they are an administrator and they handle everything that needs to be done as it's required.

What about the implementation team?

We are integrators and therefore we are able to implement the solution ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing falls somewhere in the middle of what the market offers. It's not overly expensive. The licensing model is quite good. Everything is included under it.

What other advice do I have?

We are just a customer and an end-user.

We're using the latest version of the solution. We always use the latest version.

I'd recommend the solution.

I'd rate it at a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Effective automation, easy to use, but stability needs improvement

Pros and Cons

  • "The solution is simple to use and has effective automation."
  • "There needs to be better stability during heavy capacity in future releases."

What is our primary use case?

I use VMware SRM for DR testing and VR.

What is most valuable?

The solution is simple to use and has effective automation.

What needs improvement?

VMware SRM does not have the capacity to do DR tests. We had issues whenever we were doing tests with the root cause analysis. We had 70 to 80 percent successful results because the vCenters were overloaded and that was the reason that we were having capacity issues.

We have been experiencing an additional problem when adding a regular VM in the replicated storage. By default, it will show an error. However, there is not any monitoring mechanism that would show you are not supposed to have a regular VM which is non-VR in the replicated SRM storage. Whenever we used to do testing we had to figure out that a regular VM is there and remove it manually.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for approximately seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability should be smooth, and as for the capacity, we should be able to run the test successfully. However, from our research and DR test results, we came to the conclusion that we have to run the DR test during the non-production hours. Logically, they should be able to be done during the production hours, but that is not the case. We have to ensure that the vCenters are free and are not doing regular work for us not to have any issues during the DR test.

There needs to be better stability during heavy capacity in future releases.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is easy to scale.

The solution is used extensively in our large organization.

How are customer service and technical support?

When we first started out using this solution we encountered a few issues and used the support but we now know how to fix most of the issues and have not used them. Additionally, we have our own team for support.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is logically simple and in the medium range of difficulty. However, you need to make sure you have the proper infrastructure.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated Veritas and Zerto.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others looking into implementing VMware SRM not to totally be dependent upon it. Review other solutions, such as Veritas regulatory platform and Zerto. There are newer VM DR options coming out regularly and they should not have only one solution.

I rate VMware SRM a six out of ten.

Easy to set up with good features but file copy jobs result in errors

Pros and Cons

  • "The initial setup was very easy."
  • "I only ever found one error. It was when we were doing a file copy job. After using it for ten minutes, it would slow down and cause a bottleneck error."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily used the solution for backups and replication.

What is most valuable?

For the most part, all of the features are very good.

The initial setup was very easy.

What needs improvement?

I only ever found one error. It was when we were doing a file copy job. After using it for ten minutes, it would slow down and cause a bottleneck error.

It would be ideal if the product can reduce the number of errors we received.

For how long have I used the solution?

I had been using the solution for about six months or so. It hadn't been that long.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We do seem to get many errors, especially during file copies.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Not too many people are using the solution. It was basically just myself and my colleague, and we were using it in order to evaluate it. It hasn't been used widely yet.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never used technical support. I cannot speak to how helpful or responsive they are, having never spoken with them directly. I wouldn't be able to evaluate their services.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before working with this solution, I did not use any other similar products. In the past, I simply used a bit of HP products for certain tasks.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex or too complicated. It's very easy and quite straightforward. A company shouldn't have any issues with the process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is only one license that you can purchase. My colleague was handling the licensing details. I was looking at it more from a technical perspective and therefore can't speak to the pricing or licensing agreements that are possible.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were basically evaluating Veritas and Veeam. We've just been evaluating both of them.

What other advice do I have?

I used the solution at my previous company. Currently, our organization is considering Veeam and Veritas and we are evaluating both to see which would be best for our company.

I would advise other users to not do file copy jobs from Veeam. It's best to just use it for replication purposes.

I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten overall.
