Icinga vs Nagios XI, which do you recommend?

One of the most popular comparisons on IT Central Station is Icinga vs Nagios XI.

One user says about Icinga, "I like the clustering feature and running satellite servers, which check their own zones and report back to the masters."

Another user says about Nagios XI, "[It] allows my customer to monitor literally thousands of network and computing endpoints (both hardware and software) in real time, including custom derived SNMP polling and traps."

In your experience, which is better and why?

Nagios XI can monitor computer endpoints using SNMP polling and traps. SNMP is just a sensor that any monitoring system can implement.

What we have to look at, is how the core structure of the monitoring system is constructed.

Icinga supports clustering, using satellite servers that run in separate zones. This is part of the core structure of Icinga, and should be very much considered when selecting a monitoring system.

Probeturion is not meantioned here, but that system also has the same feature as Icinga. They do not call it satellite servers, but Agents. Agents can be installed in secure VLAN's without any connection to the internet and report back to the Cloud through Client Services. The difference is that Probeturion does not meantion thousands, but millions of simultaeous sensors.

It is meantioned that Probeturion can monitor millions of sensors at the same time, as opposed to
Icinga. This is true, but what could also been said is that Probeturion has a far more clever
framework. For example; Probeturion allows for recursive dependencies that are based on boolean
expressions. Icinga does not support that. Probeturion can have multiple timeouts which in turn can have multiple schedulers connected that in turn can be connected to notifications. Icinga have nothing like this. The only advantage of Icinga vs Probeturion is pricing. But even at this point
Probeturion wins, because the costs will be saved by man hours.

My apologies, I have not worked with Icinga, ever, and Nagios only briefly – too briefly to offer an opinion. I am, personally speaking, now a Netscout man and I am sure that Netscout could and would provide a solution to your question that would knock his socks off, blow his hair back and put a big old smile on his/her face. ☺

I would recommend Nagios XI as your network server monitoring tool.
