I have been Implementing Veeam for over ten years. The product has come a long way. With any good backup solution, you need to have a good platform for the backups to land. With flash prices dropping I would pair your secondary storage (flash) as the backup target, this is great for restores and restoring a backup is normally a second thought but should be considered during design.  I would rate it a 9 out of ten for a fully Virtual environment and 8 out of 10 for a mixed environment.

While Veeam is a good Backup and Replication solution that we use for our Hyper-V VMs we also keep SQL Server backups as a separate solution. The backup is good for a DR and HA solution but for Ransomeware and Database corruption be sure to have a separate solution for databases.

We currently use Veeam for backup of VMs to our DR site and know how long the backups take as during one of our failover tests we were unable to get the Veeam backup because the backup had not yet completed so we were not able to get the restore in the DR site. This means keeping multiple copies and some retention in case of equipment failure and a complete restore in needed.

All databases are also backed up to a NAS both at production and in the DR site which are on separate security platforms so a Ransomeware attack is not able to touch and are also retained weekly and monthly as data corruption usually takes several days to surface.

If you have virtual environments or databases, Veeam Backup Replication is a good solution. I would recommend it to others. I rate Veeam Backup & Replication a nine out of ten.

My advice is to determine whether the version they have is the correct one that they require, as Veeam has three different versions. As a result, you must determine which version is appropriate for your organization. That is a mistake that we have made in the past. I would rate Veeam Backup & Replication an eight out of ten.

I used the solution at my previous company. Currently, our organization is considering Veeam and Veritas and we are evaluating both to see which would be best for our company. I would advise other users to not do file copy jobs from Veeam. It's best to just use it for replication purposes. I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten overall.

Veeam Backup & Replication is a great product for a virtual environment — it's really effective. From a technical point of view, it's very effective — I think they're doing great. Year after year, they announce many new features; they are definitely keeping up to date with the times. Many of their competitors have also released some sort of hardware as a repository together with their software. Still, I think that Veeam will stay software-only, which is fine. I think they're doing good. Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give Veeam Backup & Replication a rating of eight.

The solution is deployed both on-premises and to the cloud. There are 1,500 people making use of it. We require one person for its maintenance. While the documentation is good enough, it should be properly read. A person should read the manual and be experienced with the infrastructure of his computers and company servers. I rate Veeam Backup and Replication as an eight out of ten.

I would recommend Veeam Backup & Replication to others. Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of eight. The only issue I have is with their technical support; otherwise, it's a great product. We chose Veeam because, according to Gartner and multiple reports, it's the number one product for virtualized infrastructure. We got the demo and began a POC on a couple of servers. It was good for performing backups, etc., but it's not about the product. The product is good, it's the service after the sale that you have to look out for. After the sale is complete, the service and support are what matters. This can make or break a product.

I wouldn't really recommend this solution. In terms of the integration of this solution, we're finding it doesn't do everything it promises. There is a difference between what the sales people tell you and the reality. Because of the issues we've had, I rate this solution four out of 10.

Review the documentation and their knowledge base on how to set it up and configure it. It takes a bit to get it sorted out and to figure it out, but once you get it working it just keeps working. I would rate Veeam Backup Replication a nine out of ten.

My advice for anybody who is considering Veeam is that it's a good product. We do not have an environment that is user-centric, where I can make specific suggestions otherwise. I would definitely recommend this solution to others. It can be deployed on-prem or on the cloud. They also have a new cloud-specific product. Veeam is a good backup product but it definitely needs more complexity when it comes to supporting different types of systems and applications. One thing that I enjoy with some open-source solutions is that they're normally the fastest to implement. With open source solutions, if I have a server and I need to backup something into a folder, either an internet folder, a shared folder on the local network, or a local storage folder, I do not have to have these folders open on the origin system. I only open these folders at the time of transmitting the files, and then they are closed automatically. This means I do not have these folders open if I don't need them because it's safer that way to prevent ransomware attacks and so on. As I said, don't trust the cloud. If you use the cloud, be sure to have a backup of the cloud. Testing is much more preferable on-premises. This on-premise location can be the local office of the company where you are doing it from, and also remote offices. Just don't use a cloud where you don't know where the server is. On-premises, when I say "cloud", I mean the internet. I can have an office in London, and if I want to back up on-premise, I do it on the local storage. I don't use general clouds like Azure. I have a server where I know where it is in some location and I remotely back up into that server. I don't buy storage on clouds. I'm really not a good customer for that. I don't trust them. They're excellent, they are really what people say are the future, but I have experienced too many disruptions on clouds. If I go into a software solution where I have to move the cloud, this obligates me to also have a solution to backup the cloud. I don't want to have these two solutions going from the office to the cloud and then also backing up the cloud — it's a nightmare. Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of eight.

My advice to anyone considering Veeam Backup & Replication would be to definitely demo it and see what you think about it because you can't try it before you buy it, and see how it works in your environment. I'm not too sure if there are any trials that go on for a month at a time, but it depends on the customer. If they decide that this is something good for them, then we move forward with it and adjust as we go. But the majority of our customers know what Veeam is and have seen the product out there, because I send a lot of information out via LinkedIn and send emails to my customers about those services. It would just depend on whether it was an attorney's office, a hospital, whatever he is, but those folks would want to have their data as quickly as possible. On a scale of one to ten, I would give Veeam Backup & Replication a 10.

A few months ago, about two months, I was in a meeting and I asked my service provider which version we were using. They said that we were using the latest version. I don't know if it's still the latest version, however, if it not the latest, it's almost the latest. We access our backup through a service provider. We're in the process of looking for more protection services to better guard against attacks. I'd advise those considering the solution to look carefully at the licensing. In the beginning, we experienced some troubles with the licensing models that were acquired by service provider. That caused some limitations. It was a major concern for us at first and might be a major concern for others. In general, I would recommend the solution. I'd rate it at an eight out of ten.

But I don't know if they will do that because they've got all the functionalities to restore a system and it's working.
