With that said, Salesforce can help drive informed decision making within your organization especially if your offering has sufficient complexity to warrant both a marketing and sales team. Lines tend to get blurred when generated leads from marketing are handed off to the sales team to close and you wonder where is the best spend to generate leads. The lead conversion functionality (when executed properly) enables you to associate won opportunities by the sales team back to the original lead source even if won after an extended period of time. This provides an understanding of your marketing spend through possible reporting in Salesforce as result of the way it indexes information.
If / when your organization is prepared to execute sophisticated marketing automation, Salesforce is also positioned to integrate smoothly with Eloqua, Pardot and Marketo (possibly others as well, but I know these integrations work beautifully). Choosing a CRM that has the capacity to evolve with more sophisticated marketing efforts without impacting core processes and infrastructure has advantages.

One reason relates to the Salesforce AppExchange. Salesforce has a huge range of 3rd party applications that can extend it's capabilities without the need to carry out any coding yourself.
I am currently building solutions that incorporate automated document generation and distribution along with web forms that capture customer satisfaction directly into Salesforce and saves a huge amount of manual effort.
Salesforce offers everything on cloud and no software installation on local necessary. Plus visualization dashboards in Salesforce are very attractive. But it's cloud platform is the biggest reason for its success.
