Ease of Network configuration management and enriching the capabilities of real time performance metrics. Without these it would be hard to live with NMS.

Aspects to look out for in any Network Management Application should be its : accuracy, ease of management, real-time reporting to enhance proactive monitoring, at a glance view (simple overview) and event logging/ auditing feature

Accuracy - of an NMS App is mandatory to any effective NMS as this directly impacts its reliability in any applicable form. If the NMS App does not give a precise and accurate report of the actual status of the managed network node, then it needs to be reconsidered for usage.

Ease of management - should be placed on high priority when selecting or considering any NMS App as this will help the users, administrators to simply perform respective activities. User friendliness is a top priority to consider in selecting NMS Apps. There should be no complexity experienced in working with NMS Apps.

Real-time reporting - is the pride of most successful NMS Apps in the industry today. Every business wants to know exactly what is going in real-time. This also enhances proactive monitoring which in a way reduces the MTTR.

At a glance view (simple overview) - this feature provides a glance view of all managed portions of the network. At this view, all faulty and non-faulty portions should be easily identified.

Event logging/Auditing - Fantastic feature is if the NMS App can provide an audit trail of all the events that occur. This provide a detailed sequence of all events from the start to failure period of the managed device(s).

There are other features that should influence the selection of NMS Apps in any organization.

Monitoring, troubleshooting and service availability - all their alarms needs to be solved proactively as soon as possible.

a combination of ease to use for users but great options for admin / expandability. If it's not easy for users, they just won't use it.
