What do you think of SSIS?

Sql Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2016 Review Summary SSIS 2016 - the Good the Bad, and the Ugly SSIS is a unique ETL tool for a number of reasons. Most shops already own it but may treat it as a one-off free utility rather than as an enterprise ETL tool even though it can compete with the best of ETL tools. Some of the lack of respect is due to immature beginnings in its former "DTS" days. And some of it is because it comes bundled with Sql Server and does not normally run (but can) on a separate ETL server.  It can't be good if its free right?  Especially when competitors easily charge 6 figures for  their tools. Don't we get what we pay for?  My answer is, generally yes but this may be an exception worth noting. SSIS has become extremely flexible, extensible...

What do you think of SharePoint?

SharePoint has conquered the enterprise intranet. Although the conquest is never as bloody nor expensive as more invasive conquests, such as the Mongols under Genghis Khan, intranet citizens are not always thrilled by the new system and structure under Gates Khan. SharePoint is present in 80% of the Fortune 100; and plays a prominent intranet role in about 70% of knowledge worker intranets (either powering the main intranet portal, or delivering associated collaboration sites and/or document repositories). This in spite of its history. SharePoint 2007 was a dog; SharePoint 2010 was a dressed-up dog; but SharePoint 2013 represents a leap forward, and SharePoint 2016 and Office 365 represent considerable improvement into a a very usable, complex digital workplace solution. ...

What do you think of Lync Server?

Disclaimer: the new version of Lync Server 2013, Skype for Business (SfB) Server 2015, has been released a few weeks ago. Licensing model is the same you had for Lync Server, with companies paying only Front End servers (i.e. the ones hosting user accounts and the core services for your infrastructure).  SfB contains some new features, including support for Back End availability based on AlwaysOn groups. I will write a dedicated post asap.      The costs related to Microsoft Lync are something that I have talked about more than once but this is the first time I try to summarize information in a single document. I will limit my reflections to on-premises organizations, because as I am writing, Lync Online has no serious support for Enterprise Voice (i.e. VOIP) and this...

What do you think of SharePoint?

SharePoint is appreciated for its simplicity of use out-of-the-box, though derided for problems (and the expenses) customizing the user experience (design, navigation and information architecture). SharePoint is replete with functionality and applications, and is the most comprehensive intranet development platform on the market. It is, unfortunately, expensive, and most of the feature set that we use, and that our clients use, fall short of expectations, and often below best-of-breed. SharePoint 2013 isn’t a niche product that is supposed to be superb at web content management, or social networking; it’s a broad solution, one that has something for everybody; a solution that can please some, but not all. However, SharePoint 2013 was much improved over its predecessor, but left...

What do you think of SharePoint?

SharePoint 2019 was just unveiled, with great fanfare and buzz amongst those inside or close to the Microsoft community. But to most average users and administrators without insider caché, the new release – three years in the making – was met with little more than a nod. And very few have indicated they will rush to implement. Though those with Office 365 automatically have the latest features in SharePoint Online. SharePoint’s greatest strength is it’s an all-in-one approach – it’s a portal, a content management system, a search engine, a social collaboration platform, a web development platform, and so much more. Its greatest weakness is that it’s an all-in-one solution – everything and the kitchen sink; a jack-of-all-trades, a master of none. Some argue that SharePoint is a “mile...

What do you think of SSIS?

What is our primary use case?: SSIS is a very flexible solution that allows data to be generated through code or external software. As a result, we can create reproducible patterns and improve code quality. • How has it helped my organization?: Because of the code generation, code quality improved and the time to develop decreased. This led to a quicker and more agile development phase. • What is most valuable?: It has the ability to be deployed into the cloud through Data Factory, and run completely as a software as a service in the cloud. • What needs improvement?: Metadata management. A change in the metadata source cripples the whole ETL process, requiring each module to be manually reopened. • For how long have I used the solution?: More than five years.

What do you think of SharePoint?

What is our primary use case?: Compared to other products, SharePoint is not only a content manager, but a wider product, like enterprise content management. You can use multiple components in SharePoint. Moreover, SharePoint is already moving to cloud, if you are using SharePoint online, which is cloud-based technology, it is more accessible.  • What is most valuable?: Data classification Search These two elements are cheap. • What needs improvement?: We would like more security features, like automating.  • For how long have I used the solution?: More than five years. • What do I think about the scalability of the solution?: There are some limitations on storage.  • How is customer service and technical support?: The product and technical support teams are...

What do you think of SharePoint?

What is our primary use case?: Most departments use SharePoint for their own organizational homepages and their document repositories • How has it helped my organization?: It is better than static repositories via shared drives, and better than having to use software that is not mainstream (i.e. Microsoft is very mainstream). • What is most valuable?: Its configuration management ability is critical for document-based systems. It offers ease of use, which is crucial. • What needs improvement?: During uptime under our network, it is hard to find info when content is hefty. It should have a Google-caliber search ability and a model-based GUI. • For how long have I used the solution?: More than five years.
