What do you think of SSIS?

Sql Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2016 Review Summary SSIS 2016 - the Good the Bad, and the Ugly SSIS is a unique ETL tool for a number of reasons. Most shops already own it but may treat it as a one-off free utility rather than as an enterprise ETL tool even though it can compete with the best of ETL tools. Some of the lack of respect is due to immature beginnings in its former "DTS" days. And some of it is because it comes bundled with Sql Server and does not require a separate ETL server.  It can't be good if its free right?  Especially when competitors easily charge 6 figures for the same or lesser functionality. Don't we get what we pay for?  My answer is, generally yes but this may be an exception worth noting. SSIS has become extremely flexible,...

What do you think of Lync Server?

Disclaimer: the new version of Lync Server 2013, Skype for Business (SfB) Server 2015, has been released a few weeks ago. Licensing model is the same you had for Lync Server, with companies paying only Front End servers (i.e. the ones hosting user accounts and the core services for your infrastructure).  SfB contains some new features, including support for Back End availability based on AlwaysOn groups. I will write a dedicated post asap.     The costs related to Microsoft Lync are something that I have talked about more than once but this is the first time I try to summarize information in a single document. I will limit my reflections to on-premises organizations, because as I am writing, Lync Online has no serious support for Enterprise Voice (i.e. VOIP) and this...

What do you think of SharePoint?

SharePoint is appreciated for its simplicity of use out-of-the-box, though derided for problems (and the expenses) customizing the user experience (design, navigation and information architecture). SharePoint is replete with functionality and applications, and is the most comprehensive intranet development platform on the market. It is, unfortunately, expensive, and most of the feature set that we use, and that our clients use, fall short of expectations, and often below best-of-breed. SharePoint 2013 isn’t a niche product that is supposed to be superb at web content management, or social networking; it’s a broad solution, one that has something for everybody; a solution that can please some, but not all. However, SharePoint 2013 was much improved over its predecessor, but left...

What do you think of SharePoint?

SharePoint 2016 was released in the Spring of 2016, and builds from many of the features already introduced in Office 365. Though SharePoint 2016 does have new features, most of the features are behind the scenes, from the administrative perspective. Much of the user experience, social, and content management experience is untouched (as is the ribbon), with some exceptions. Among the new features: Delve / My Profile (About Me) - My Sites disappears in favor of a new profile, About Me, that also uses the Delve inference engine. Cloud / Hybrid - Hybrid enables you to integrate your on-premises farm with the cloud, at your own pace. Durable Links - Resource-based URLs now retain links when documents are renamed or moved in SharePoint. Image and video previews - Preview images...

What do you think of SQL Server?

Where to start? Great range of admin tools (far outnumbers MYSQL) - I like the database tuning tools  Nice BI tools and integration ability.  Evolves quickly due to the monster support from MS Integrates with the rest of MS products (this is a plus and a minus, of course) Scalable - a few MBs up to petabytes.  High availability/failover clustering makes DR straightforward. Own reporting services - if you can't report on it, it's hard to manage.  Problems include - is it an MS product? Then licensing can be a pain if they do an audit.  Also, with AWS's offerings becoming so easy to set up, scale, and work at great speed, MS SQL probably needs to up its game massively if they are ever going to keep up, let alone fully compete with Amazon's database suite.

What do you think of SQL Server?

Valuable Features The SSIS, SSRS, and DB are the most valuable features because they help in everything. • Improvements to My Organization There is improvement in the performances and stability. • Room for Improvement SSIS needs improvement. I think that it should be easier in managing SQL packages, especially when we have multiple environments. With Kerberos Authentication, we had different issues on this and sometimes, we needed Microsoft Support too. Thus, a better and an organized SQL package review is needed. • Stability Issues When using HA (high availability), we experienced some stability issues. • Scalability Issues There were no scalability issues. • Customer Service and Technical Support Technical support is the best, I would give them a 10/10...
