Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Cisco UCS Manager is overall a good package because it gives a GUI interface and a CLI.""The reporting functionality will give you any report you want.""The most valuable features are flexibility and management.""The management is one of the most valuable features of this solution.""Technical support has been good so far. We haven't had any issues with them. We're satisfied with the level of service they provide our company.""The flexibility and the ease in which the features can be expanded are the solution's most valuable aspects.""The solution is highly scalable, mainly because of the templates that make it easy for you to actually edit on the system.""We can configure the Cisco UCS Manager, the profiles and interactions with the resource we manage."

"The initial setup is pretty easy.""This solution provides us with the needed feedback on our IT infrastructure. It allows us to grab all the information from a single point of view.""The scalability is good. You can improve a remote host or the clustering. This gives it the flexibility to monitor another infrastructure remotely.""The up-to-date graphs and the history are very good.""I can create my own program sensor. This means I can add extra monitoring capabilities into the already fundamentally strong foundation.""The remote probe feature in PRTG Network Monitor helps you monitor remote systems or your network at a lower cost than other solutions.""It is easy when it comes to dependencies of devices, so if your router goes down, the three or four switches behind it will automatically be paused so that you don't get multiple alerts.""The reporting module is easy to configure."

Cons
"Cisco UCS is expensive compared to others. The Cisco UCS Chassis is more expensive than a standalone server, but some companies require standalone servers because of their production load and affordability. You need to pay more if you require more features on the Blade or if you need more ports on the switch.""The automation within the solution needs to be simplified.""Cisco UCS Manager is not a scalable solution because once you have 160 blades, it cannot be expanded more.""We have three data centers and if we could manage all three data centers using one interface, it would be great.""There is room for improvement in the software part of Cisco UCS Manager. It should be more user-friendly, especially when creating policies.""Getting a CLI report on routers, switches, or any other CLI configuration device is difficult.""The interface and the way it is constructed is very complex. They should work to simplify it. It's quite difficult for somebody who doesn't know the product very well. Users should be able to get proficient with it faster. There's definitely room for improvement there.""What's lacking in Cisco UCS Manager is the performance dashboard. If a blade has any performance issues, you should be able to create a dashboard on Cisco UCS Manager. Currently, this feature isn't present."

More Cisco UCS Manager Cons →

"I would like to see more updates available in this solution.""PRTG Network Monitor should improve the NetFlow dashboard, there is no flexibility, and the NetFlow is not meeting the business needs. Additionally, they are missing part of the configuration management.""Their penetration within the market could be much better. If their pricing was lower, even though it's reasonable now, it might help them achieve this.""The Desktop app is good but it can be really sluggish at times, especially when you're editing different elements.""Sometimes, it is difficult to drill down further to get information, e.g., if we saw spike in traffic, then we would want to drill down and find out what is causing that spike in traffic.""PRTG Network Monitor is okay to use, but you'll need some time to analyze the data. If it can automatically locate or identify the problem area, it would be more helpful to users.""There is room for improvement in this solution for the performance and third-party monitoring protocols. They need to be updated to the latest ones.""I would like a more straightforward ability to create dashboards and maps. The network maps should be a bit more flexibility in the GUI to do what we need to do."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
