Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature of IBM Cognos is security. The solution has updated features that other competitors' solutions come out with long after IBM Cognos has had them.""The main difference that I like about Cognos compared to other solutions is its data splitting functionality. We have all our company data inside the Cognos environment and so we prefer to split the information Cognos itself. It's more efficient this way.""The basic platform comes with several meta-modelling tools.""The correlation analysis is excellent. It's one of the best that I have used to date.""Report Studio: This is the most powerful and sophisticated tool for professional reporting.""A positive feature is Report Studio, where we create beautiful, complex reports.""The solution's most valuable feature is its ease of use, which makes it easily compatible with other tools.""I have worked on the features like dashboards and stories, and I do like them a lot."

"I give the stability of the solution a nine out of ten.""The growth time is the most valuable feature of TIBCO Jaspersoft.""With the online view, it's easier to create Ad Hoc reports. It has inbuilt reports so we can easily get data from the system and customize the fields.""The end-user reporting is very handy and the standard reports that can be achieved by using Jaspersoft Studio are quite impressive.""We find the access restrictions on different user groups valuable.""The designer is the most valuable feature.""We can set any property dynamically.""The solution is standalone with the flexibility to use visualize.js to embed within the application."

Cons
"Compared to Tableau and PowerBI, the IBM interface is easier to use. However, the drag-and-drop functionality isn't as straightforward. Formatting is also more challenging in the cloud than in other applications, like Power BI. Also, if you encounter an issue, it takes more time to resolve it on the formatting side.""The visualization aspect needs to be improved and I believe, this is being resolved in upcoming versions.""There are many problems with the product's stability part, making it an area where improvements are required.""We would like to see development of the product's UI function, to make it more of a UI tool that can be configured as required.""Cognos charts are not as fast as those of the other tools, even with DQM (dynamic query mode).""Most of our company's customers want to be able to deploy IBM Cognos on a web application and use it as a desktop application, which is not possible currently.""There are some problems with how Cognos handles huge data sets and when connecting with multiple sources and searching the data.""I would like for the platform to become more standard. If we make a development on our report and our dashboard, it will not be used in another solution. That means there is no portability for the developers."

More IBM Cognos Cons →

"The reporting templates have room for improvement.""Currently, JSON format is the main format we use, however, in TIBCO Jaspersoft, XML format is the default and JSON did not work because TIBCO did not fix it.""We'd like to see the community version offer a little bit more support and better documentation and we'd like the enterprise edition to have better pricing.""I would like to see better support for big data.""A better focus should be put on self-service reporting.""The upgrades are not easy.""Customization is an area with certain shortcomings in the solution that needs improvement.""The Ad Hoc Report Writer does not include as many features as Tableau and needs to be improved to meet expectations."

It could be cheaper than Tableau but not for so many users. If you have a few thousand users, Tableau, which is generally quite expensive, can be cheaper than Cognos."

Any company (be it technology, manfucaturing, human resource, ecommerce, SME etc) always has the need for Business Intelligence to some or the other extent. If cost is one of the consideration factor, then the 2 BI tools which are at the forefront are Pentaho and Jaspersoft. But, often the same companies are caught up in an imbrogilo as to which tool to use, what are the technology/and end business user wise differences/ do i actually need to purchase commercial edition, is there any work around etc. Differences :- In the below mentioned points, I have tried to cover functionality wise the differences a. Reports :- Jaspersoft is known for its picture pixel perfect reporting. Jasper uses ireport for designing the reports. Hence, for having reports, Jaspersoft is the most ideal candidate. Pentaho uses Pentaho Report Designer. b. Dashboards :- Pentaho provides much more capabililties, interactivity in terms of dashboards. Dashboards designed in Pentaho are far more superior in functionality, aesthetically as compared to Jaspersoft. Pentaho CE uses CDE/CDF, Pentaho EE uses PDD . Dashboard functionality is present only in the Enterprise edition of Jaspersoft. c. Pentaho is having an intermediate layer known as Xactions & hence providing much more flexibility in terms of plugin designing, integration with applications, having out of box experience etc. Xactions supports scripting and scheduling of scripts execution. Jaspersoft dosent provide that much of flexibility in terms of… Read more →

Users can see only information that they have been granted access to, based on their group or role.

IBM Cognos BI consolidates the following business intelligence functions into a single web-based solution:

    • IBM Cognos Insight: Create personal and managed workspaces for data analysis. Using these interactive workspaces, you can share insight results with managers.
