We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"This solution will connect to any database, you can combine databases, and you can create a cube or tabular model.""The Cube Solution is quite different when compared to the rest of the competition and has unique functionality for advanced analytics.""This is a well-integrated solution and that integration empowers results.""Helps our customers to discover trends, which provides useful information based on their business.""We leverage its capabilities for many applications. We can integrate with our databases, like Oracle, MySQL, or any other, using Microsoft Integration Services.""It is closely integrated with other products in the MS portfolio.""Microsoft Analytics Platform System's most valuable feature is its ecosystems and seamless integration with other Microsoft reporting platforms and databases.""I like that it's integrated with other Azure products."

"The performance is great, we are able to query our data in one operation.""It handles large amounts of information with a linear performance increase, in relation to a HW investment.""It has massive parallel processing ability to do large amounts of concurrent querying.""It's very mature from a technology perspective.""Cuts time to process huge amounts of data with efficient analytical queries.""Teradata's most valuable feature is that it's easy to use.""Parallel processing features have helped to easily dump any size of data and retrieve data with great performance.""Auto-partitioning and indexing, and resource allocation on the fly are key features."

Cons
"The flexibility of this solution needs to be improved because you cannot make changes at every one of the different steps.""Machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities need to be more friendly for beginning users.""Functionality needs to be more up-to-date with competing products.""Hybrid environments are complex to manage.""We need better real-time analytics capabilities. It's a bit challenging for us.""The pricing model needs to be improved.""Microsoft Analytics Platform System could have better support.""I think the biggest problem with the product is that it does a data ingest model, which is very expensive."

More Microsoft Analytics Platform System Cons →

"Since I was working on the very basic, legacy systems, the memory thing was always a challenge. If Teradata is moving to the cloud, the space constraint or the memory issue that my company generally faces will eventually resolve, in time. What I'd like to see in the next release of Teradata is that it becomes full-fledged on the cloud, apart from better connectivity to various systems. For example, if I have to read or include a Python script, if I write some basic codes, I should be able to read even unstructured data. I know that it's not supported even in Snowflake, but at least semi-structured data support, if that can be a little more enhanced, that would be good.""Teradata is an old data warehouse, and they're not improving in terms of new, innovative features.""It needs a teaching web site with more training on third-party tools used for BI.""I would like to see an improved Knowledge Base on the web.""Teradata needs to expand the kind of training that's available to customers. Teradata only offers training directly and doesn't delegate to any third-party companies. As a result, it's harder to find people trained on Teradata in our market relative to Oracle.""An additional feature I would you like to see included in the next release, is that it needs to be more cloud-friendly.""The setup is not straightforward.""Teradata hardly supports unstructured data or semi-structured data"

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The initial price is lower than Oracle, but extensive use of SQL may lead to a higher total cost of ownership."
  • "Users have to pay extra for premium-level technical support."
  • "We are currently paying $200,000 a year for all the different parts of the suite during an ingest model Microsoft now charges us $700,000 a year."
  • "I rate Microsoft Analytics Platform System a seven out of ten for pricing."
  • More Microsoft Analytics Platform System Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Teradata is not cheap, but you get what you pay for."
  • "Make sure you have the in-house skills to design and support the solution, as relying on external sources is extremely costly and tends to lock you into specific platforms, tools, and paradigms."
  • "In the past, it turned out that other solutions, in order to provide the full range of abilities that the Teradata platform provides plus the migration costs, would end up costing more than Teradata does."
  • "The initial cost may seem high, but the TCO is low."
  • "Teradata is currently making improvements in this area."
  • "It is still a very expensive solution. While I very much like the pure technological supremacy of the software itself, I believe Teradata as a company needs to become more affordable. They are already losing the market to more flexible or cheaper competitors."
  • "Teradata is expensive but gives value for money, especially if you don't want to move your data to the cloud."
  • "Price is quite high, so if it is really possible to use other solutions (e.g. you do not have strict requirements for performance and huge data volumes), it might be better to look at alternatives from the RDBMS world."
