We performed a comparison between Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and SUSE Linux Enterprise based on our users’ reviews in four categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.
Comparison Results: RHEL excels in setup, integration, security updates, and application support. However, it falls short in terms of documentation, pricing, and customer support. SUSE Linux Enterprise is praised for its simplicity, flexibility, user-friendliness, and customer support. It needs improvement in GUI, pricing competitiveness, and integration.
"The GUI for network adapters and built-in tools provided by RHEL, such as the Mozilla browser, have been valuable. Since they come built-in, it saves the time of having to install them, and you have everything necessary with the installation itself."
"We have used many of the Linux-based operating systems for production purposes, but this is the only solution that guarantees performance and scalability. When we run industry servers, they demand high performance."
"The most valuable features are stability and supportability... You want to have something that's up and running and stable, something that's not going to crash. But if we do have an issue, we can get somebody for technical support who can help us work through the problems."
"The security, ongoing support, and ease of taking a system and getting authorization from a government agency have helped the way our organization functions."
"One pro is that at the operating system layer, like, RHEL has better support from Red Hat, and if something goes down, I found many resources for troubleshooting and stuff online."
"The solution is stable and reliable."
"The solution is very stable, reliable, easy to use, and has good technical support."
"It is more supported and supportable in the enterprise sense than Ubuntu or perhaps a smaller distro, but it's also flexible enough to easily transport from platform to platform: ISA to ISA, production to development, and vice versa."
"The most valuable feature is that there is an inbuilt HANA firewall."
"SUSE Linux Enterprise is stable."
"The initial setup for most modern Linux distributions is normally straightforward. Most of the common distributions use an ncurses or GUI install."
"The initial setup is simple and takes five minutes for deployment and if you have automation in place, it will take four minutes."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is the installation part...We don't face any issues related to the operating system or application."
"SUSE Linux Enterprise is scalable."
"YaST simplifies the server management of SUSE allowing for a centralized utility to control most of the server functions."
"It also was very easy to setup, and offered an easy to use advanced setup option as well. This helped to create special configurations for different use cases."
"Sometimes we just don't have a web interface available for repetitive tasks. It would be nice to have a web-based tool for Red Hat Enterprise Linux since we don't always have access to a web browser."
"The vulnerability assessment part should also be improved. We do a lot of patching regularly. They try to fix an issue very quickly, and we also end up facing bugs that are not properly documented. When releasing the general availability for a particular solution, they need to do a lot more work on their side."
"I would like to see the GNOME system monitor feature, which shows CPU usage and other aspects. It will help to save time."
"Their support needs improvement. It should be faster for priority tickets."
"The patching process with Red Hat is disruptive and not very cost-effective."
"Support for older versions of the operating system could be improved. If people can't afford to upgrade, or if they have servers that are outdated, they need to be able to provide back-field support for those."
"Network virtualization resources could be better. When you have any kind of trouble with network virtualization, such as with OVS, which is like a switch in a virtual environment, it takes many hours to find what is happening. Other vendors, such as VMware, and even other Linux implementations for network virtualization have better resources. It is much easier to escalate, and there is better documentation."
"From a cloud perspective, I'm looking for more integrations with native cloud services. For example, the ability to use native Azure Key Vault instead of Ansible Key Vault or Red Hat Key Vault."
"They should improve their educational portal."
"The interface could improve."
"When working in a Department of Defense environment, Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) have to be followed. SLES is not really addressed directly here. It did make following security policy difficult."
"I have not seen an ROI with this solution."
"I have not been overly impressed with their technical support."
"The price of SUSE Linux Enterprise could improve, it is too expensive."
"SUSE could make more APIs available."
"The solution could be more stable."
