We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The CLI and GUI do a good job of putting a lot at your fingertips.""The GUI is good.""Fortigate is very scalable to serve our customers' needs. We have scaled already from fifty to more than a hundred instances of Fortinet FortiGate. Around 20 staff are required for deployment and maintenance, mostly engineers.""Their interface is very easy to use, it is without bugs.""What's most important is the ease of use.""The feature I like most is the SD-WAN. It allows you to manage more than one ISP at the same time. And there is a high-availability mode, so if one of your ISPs is down, you still have a backup.""Using this product makes the VPN seamless and almost invisible to me in the sense that I don't have to think about it.""The reporting you receive out of this appliance is excellent. You will not need an external management system."

"The features that we have found most valuable in SonicWall TZ are the intrusion and brute force attack prevention.""The general feature is the antivirus policy, followed by the ransomware protection, and these are the features I was looking at.""We use the content filter quite a lot because it's an office setting. During working hours, we like to censor the sites users can visit so it increases productivity. Therefore, the content filter has been good for us.""The best thing about the product is the very good threat prevention output.""We like the unified threat management for defense-in-depth. We can terminate our site-to-site and remote access VPNs with it.""I've found the technical support to be helpful.""Access restriction and IP whitelisting are the most valuable features.""The VPN is quite useful for us, as well as the ATP."

More SonicWall TZ Pros →

"The initial setup is straightforward.""The centralized security is very good.""The most valuable features in Sophos XGS are bandwidth management, content filtering, and WAN link management failover. If one internet activity or one link would fail, automatically it will switch over to another one.""The solution is cost-effective and easy to manage.""Sophos XGS that's a good firewall. If you use the endpoint, then you have what Sophos calls synchronized security. That will mean that if one of the endpoints is affected, it will be automatically set in isolation.""In this solution, the most valuable feature is that it's a security device. Maintaining security is very valuable for us. The other feature that we did not find in other products is that it works well with thin client environments.""The most valuable feature of Sophos XGS is the application control.""Sophos XGS' most valuable features are protection and intrusion prevention detection."

Cons
"They sometimes hide some features and if you want to enable them, you have to go in the CLI, enable the feature and configure it through the CLI. Customers, typically, like everything to be done by the GUI.""One of the features that I would like to have is to do with endpoint production, it should be integrated. For example, the firewall gets notified of any kind of forensic event that needs to be done, such as if there is a ransomware attack and how it originated, all those records have to be available from the firewall, which is not.""There are some license issues. Not every feature must have a separate license. There must be some of kind synergy between the license so we don't have to pay for every individual license that we would like to have.""In terms of what could be improved, the SD-WAN is quite difficult, because if you install the new box, 15 is okay, but if you change from an old configuration, if there is already configuration and a policy when you change to SD-WAN, you must change the whole policy that you see in the interface.""The solution could be more user friendly.""The support structure needs to be improved because every time we contact them, there is a delay in the response.""I would prefer to have more detailed logs within the FortiGate products themselves rather than relying on a separate tool.""The pricing could be a bit better, especially when you consider how they have the most basic offering priced."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"Full monitoring obviously needs to be improved. We need full monitoring covered under the security licensing.""We require centralized monitoring of the network features, which they have but they are not to the level that we require.""User interface could be improved.""In general, the company needs to think contingently and integrate more security options.""I'd like to have cloud management at no additional cost. Unfortunately, leveraging SonicWall's cloud management capabilities is cost-prohibitive, so we don't use it. They should have a reasonable subscription or offer it to us at no cost as an MSP.""The monitoring is a little bit confusing.""Support for SonicWall TZ needs improvement, particularly the time it takes before you're able to speak to a support person, e.g. you have to wait for at least 30 minutes on the phone.""I would like to see more integration with other platforms."

More SonicWall TZ Cons →

"The application is a little slow; it takes five to ten seconds to respond to every click when configuring. If we need to do significant configuration, it can take a lot of time. This might be because we have a low-end machine, and it could be faster with a high-end one.""I do not get notifications regarding ISP downtime.""There are issues with some designs being able to work on high availability.""The support team are helpful when you eventually get hold of them which takes a long time. They can improve how quickly you get technical support.""There are a lot of false-positive cases.""There are some bugs relating to the product that allow VPN users to bypass the firewall.""It would be nice to have features like the network access control (NAC) that Cisco has for Identity Services Engine. In the next release, I would also like to see an increase in the performance of the processing units.""We'd like an interface that can monitor everything."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
