We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The session-level filtering features are valuable.""The drill-down available for packet analysis is great. It gives a network security engineer insight into what is going on at the packet level and enables better troubleshooting.""It has good basic features.""Wireshark is very user-friendly; even someone with basic IT knowledge can use it.""The most valuable feature is the traffic gate, which shows which IPs are getting more bandwidth or traffic.""Wireshark's best feature is that it's adaptive, which means it's the go-to tool for network-related developers.""Wireshark has a lot of features. It's a powerful tool if you're familiar with it. You can see everything on the network with it.""I like the filtering feature as we can filter data easily. This feature is also available in tcpdump, but it's a simple piece of software. Wireshark is more advanced and has many features. It allows you to filter a lot of things. The output can be filtered easily. The most important feature is colorization. If I say, "Okay, this particular SMB protocol in red, it will show me red." It's easy to identify that protocol or capture data."

"Setup was straightforward. Initial deployment took two or three months.""The most valuable features in Zabbix are those that help us overcome bottlenecks in CPU usage, as well as reduce memory delay. I know that we have only reached the tip of the iceberg of what Zabbix's features can do for us, and we have not used all of them yet.""The most valuable feature is the support for monitoring Cisco switches.""Dashboard and the customization of the items and triggers are the most valuable features.""It not only provides the preconfigured item monitoring feature, but it is also easy to configure custom items.""It has good graphs of what is going on within the operating system.""The most valuable feature is network traffic monitoring.""The most valuable feature is the protocol to manage anything."

Cons
"I would like to see Wireshark improve the ease of application of the command. The command is very powerful, but not easy to apply.""The initial setup depends upon the basics. You need to have a clear understanding of the basics.""It would be better if they offered a hybrid version like My Cloud Control.""With Wireshark, you cannot download and utilize the packet in automation.""The Wireshark search function shows green for a correct search and red for an incorrect search. If there were a way to provide a description about what a search - and the similar ones which are available - can do, while a person is typing it, it would make the product easier to use and simultaneously decrease the learning curve.""It is not an easy program. You will need to study to use it to its full capabilities (follow a course).""Big trace files (more than 1,000,000 packets) can be slow, but then you can use "TraceWrangler" (also free) to help with slicing and dicing the data.""You need some basic knowledge to work with Wireshark. Maybe it could be more user-friendly just for new users. Just for the new generation."

More Wireshark Cons →

"The dashboard and the graph section could be a little bit more professional.""We would like to monitor other touchpoints such as ATM machines. It would be great if it can provide monitoring of ATM machines. Compatibility with other products would also be great.""Having a more customizable interface and dashboard would be an improvement.""I think the reporting part of Zabbix can be improved in terms of more user-friendly graphics to display the collected data. Many simple users who don't know how to use Zabbix properly might get confused by the reporting, although at the same time it is very versatile for my company.""There's a small module of APM, however, it is not an enhanced version. People usually ask for a full-fledged APM solution.""When we have a problem, we have to do a lot of research to solve it.""There are some features of Zabbix that are not good for reporting. The DX Spectrum solution has better reporting.""Outside of the normal standard monitoring, I would like to extend patching, importing patching, and supporting patching for Windows Servers."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
