We performed a comparison between Cisco HyperFlex HX-Series [EOL] and Rubrik based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Dell Technologies, VMware, Nutanix and others in HCI."The solution is also quite flexible. As an example, other vSAN solutions that we looked at had more stringent requirements regarding mixed HDD/SSD storage which wouldn't have worked in our environment."
"StarWind Virtual SAN is a very mature software that supersedes its capabilities with my use cases."
"Recovery and maintenance are now less stressful and most importantly, it allows our users to keep working."
"It is extremely stable."
"I've had to open a few support cases over the years due to administrator errors, and the support received was top-notch."
"StarWind is very easy to use, even if you have had no experience using a SAN before."
"The fact that I can now count on a true failover solution is what is most appealing."
"The product's core feature of virtualizing our storage is by far the most valuable."
"Overall, the solution is extremely easy, flexible and secure."
"Deduplication is a valuable feature available in Cisco HyperFlex."
"The product is easy to manage and flexible for upgrading without major changes."
"The ROI we have seen from the high performance that has saved us time and money."
"The possibility to share the workload is one of its most valuable features. We have many applications which have need of workloads only a few times in a month, so we share HyperFlex with them."
"It is very scalable. It is also very secure. Cisco's security portfolio is integrated with it, which makes it secure. It is a platform-based device. Its performance is also fairly good in comparison to any other solution."
"The initial setup was straightforward. With our partners and the consultancy that we had, we knew what we wanted to do. Therefore, we didn't have any problems with the installation and parametrization."
"Stretch cluster allows us to warranty a service for the customer."
"I would rate the solution's web interface at eight out of ten. It's just fantastic and intuitive. It's so easy to use. I've never done any formal training on Rubrik, but I was able to quickly come to grips with its capabilities."
"Drives the back-end through a powerful, well-documented API."
"Intelligent agent technology."
"CloudOut, because only blocks are pushed after compression and deduplication, not raw sizing."
"It works with VMware and Hyper-V without agent installation."
"Features we have requested are typically added to the next product release."
"It has a single pane of glass interface."
"The most valuable feature is the Instant Recovery, where we can restore a VM or SQL database or any server or application, and have it up and running on their appliance within a few seconds."
"StarWind relies on the underlying OS to manage the "SAN files" whether that would be a RAID volume, software RAID (such as LVM), etc. It would be useful if StarWind could incorporate the actual physical drive management inside of the solution, similar to Storage Spaces Direct."
"StarWind Virtual SAN architecture is slightly complex and requires the team to carefully identify and study how the solution integrates with VMware vSphere."
"It could have a dashboard so that you can check all servers' SAN health and performance."
"I am expecting to see it more user-friendly in the future."
"The reconnection of the attached drives upon a reboot could be improved."
"Besides not being able to use any filesystem, I do not have any additional cons."
"I'd love to see native export of metrics (via Prometheus or something of that nature) to allow us to get more metrics available on our existing dashboard software."
"The interface of the management console of the StarWind Virtual SAN is complex, and it's difficult for the novice user to interact with the management having less knowledge or training in the product."
"The product needs work in the area of deduplication which currently is inefficient."
"Lacks some integration and documentation could be improved."
"One of the biggest problems with HyperFlex HX is that if you want to adjust your solution in terms of processing power, memory, or disk capacity, you have to buy completely new hosts. From a financial perspective, it can be very expensive to do so, and from a legal perspective, there are all kinds of compliance issues we would have to sort out before buying any new solution or application."
"The additional feature I would like to see included in the next release of this solution is more security. We want to add more data servers to all the hosts all over the world. We have 140 hosts that connect to one data center in Manila."
"The initial setup of profiles and templates could be improved. Maybe some end profiles that you can use based on your type of deployment would be good."
"The deployment could be made a little bit easier, as we still seem to struggle with it a little bit for a day or so to get it running."
"If we compare it with VMware, the VMware product is basically very open, and it can be easily integrated with any platform. VMware product is also available on the cloud and is not an appliance-based product, whereas Cisco HyperFlex is an appliance-based product. Companies that want to use HCI as a platform or as a service would prefer something without an appliance. A SaaS-based product is better for a customer who is using the cloud and has multiple resources, workflows, and devices on the cloud and wants to go for a hyper-converged solution. This is where improvement is needed. In addition to an appliance-based product, Cisco should provide a SaaS-based product. Its price should be lower. Cisco needs to work on the pricing model for this product. Its price is a big road blocker when competing against Nutanix and VMware, which are its main competitors."
"I would like to see more analytics. It could use better infographs in the HyperFlex Connect on how traffic is running in the network. If you were reaching any capacity issues on the Fabric Interconnects, it should be able to cool all of the servers and Fabric Interconnects, then possibly integrate it with, e.g., Nexus Series switches. This should all be available in a single pane of glass."
"User interface could be improved."
"Improving PowerShell integration would greatly simplify Rubrik management."
"The recovery of Oracle databases is too complicated. It is not something that helps the DBA, the Database Administrator, but it should be done by the backup person like many other solutions. Everything is ready for the DBA to recover the database. It is a way of doing things, but I don't think you should give the backup people the ability to do it."
"The interface is still slightly clunky and has room for improvement. They do work with us whenever we mention anything that needs to be done or anything that we want. We find that bringing up the management interface is a little slow and not as intuitive as we would like, but it's been getting better as it evolves."
"It does not offer image-level backups for Hyper-V 2012."
"Rubrik can only leverage cloud storage for archiving and has no cloud failover."
"I would like to see more openness for partners to access and assist in system management. Currently, access is limited, often handled by Rubrik personnel, likely due to security concerns."
"With Windows, it is difficult to configure Oracle Database."
