We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is easy to use. We chose this product for the possibility to have virtual domains (VDOMs). We are building another company in the group, and we would like to split the firewalling rules and policies between these two companies. Each company would be able to manage its own policies and security rules, which is an advantage of Fortinet FortiGate. We can define VDOMs, and every company can manage its own VDOM as if it has its own physical firewall, but in fact, we would be using the same physical appliance because we are also using the same internet lines. So, it allows us to reuse the existing resources without the disadvantage of having to compromise on policies and security. Each company can choose its own way of working.""The FortiGate controls the user's activities and maximizes my bandwidth use overall.""Fortinet FortiGate is stable. It's used across all the countries, this is the way most multinationals run their system.""Fortigate represents a really scalable way of delivering perimeter network security, some level of layer 7 security, WAF, and also a way to create a meshed ADVPN solution.""What I like the most is the configuration and that it's simple, and straightforward to maintain.""Good performance, stability, and virtual domain ability.""FortiGate firewalls are user-friendly, and I like the security profiling features.""The SD-WAN function is very developed. It has SD-WAN functionality with security features in one device. We can manage from one single console SD-WAN and the security policy."

"It's almost perfect. It's very stable. We don't have many hardware issues.""Use of this product does not require daily interactions.""All the security features that are built into the product are valuable.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate-VM are its flexibility and scalability. This solution is available as a license, which allows us to activate it based on the specific needs of the customer. This gives us and the customer a great deal of versatility and customization options.""FortiGate integrates well.""The solution integrates well with other Fortinet products.""The IPS module is my favorite because of the security advantage reached with a few clicks and its automatic updates.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate-VM are the ease of use, IPS system, application filter, web filtering, and email security. Additionally, there is a migration tool that other vendors do not provide. We only need to upload the configuration file to the tool, and it converts everything, except the passwords, and gives us the new configuration, which we can directly upload on the firewall. This migration process takes a maximum of 15 minutes."

"The statistic feature enables us to better use bandwidth management. We monitored the use by mobile, type of application, department, and by users. The bandwidth was solid. Our internet speed is optimized for our research.""The solution is user-friendly.""Instead of using a cloud-based product for accessing information, and putting my data at risk in the cloud and in someone else's hands, it has allowed me to use a VPN and access my data directly from a laptop when I am out in the field. That has made my life a lot easier, where I'm able to access any information I need to be able access, basically on demand, with an Internet connection. That alone has been great.""The firewall and intrusion detection features are very useful these days because hackers have a lot of tricks that they use to get into a system. With Kerio Control you can see something that's happening. Otherwise, you have to use other tools to see what's happening on the firewalls. Having IPS in it is quite useful for us.""When one of the employees of my customers is using the VPN Client, I have created for them that they will always get a message. When the VPN Client connects to Kerio Control from the outside, they will get an email so they know when they are connected and when they are disconnected what is happening to their network.""We also like the security. We can control what sites users can go to and we can make sure that where they're going is appropriate and that it's work-related.""The comprehensiveness of the security features that Kerio Control provides us with is good. Before GFI had it, they would have more updates. The updates have been slower, but I like the things that they keep adding like the ability to block by country. I use pretty much every feature.""Compared to other solutions, accounting and live monitoring of firewall status are very good features in KerioControl."

More KerioControl Pros →

Cons
"NGN, reporting and controls.""There are just some services that aren't available. For example, the Ethernet or point-to-point protocols. They could add these services to their product offering - especially services for ISPs.""I would like to see more advanced developments of a wireless controller in the future.""Fortinet FortiGate could improve by having more capabilities for troubleshooting VPN connections. For example, I do get some feedback about the current status, but I could use some history and logging of important events. The information is logged in our Syslog server, but I could use that information from the device. If they could provide a GUI to have some more insight on what's going with my VPN would be useful.""From a reporting perspective, there's room for improvement. They're providing FortiAnalyzer through which one can get some enhancements, but the visibility and reporting still need slight improvement.""They've become quite expensive.""I have to say that the initial setup was complex. The deployment took a few days to get set up. Initially, we were using an IPVanish. We switched to this tool since we thought it would be easier. But it turns out it wasn't easier to set up and run.""The solution needs to improve its integration with cybersecurity."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"FortiGate should be more customer friendly and budgeted better.""We are experiencing a failed login issue. There should also be improvements in functionalities we store to enhance our services.""his is not a good solution for enterprises. It's better for smaller companies.""One thing that can be better is added automation. And, on top of that, enhanced security when it comes to the automation itself.""The product may not be as robust as Palo Alto. However, unless you are a big bank, you probably won't need it to be.""Not a ten because I think that Cisco is better.""We'd like to have more customization and easier customization of policies.""The scalability feature of the solution has certain shortcomings, making it an area where improvements are required."

More Fortinet FortiGate-VM Cons →

"It has a VPN back to our data center but I don't think it has increased the number of VPN clients extended to those outside our environment""The filtering on the unlicensed version of Kerio Control is inefficient - you have to add each website manually, which isn't feasible.""There's also room for improvement in the Traffic Rules. We define networks to use a specific outgoing interface, say VSAT, shore, or marine WiFi, which is okay. But then all we have is a checkbox that says "Use other internet interfaces if this one is unavailable." What we would prefer would be to have a priority list. So if VSAT is unavailable, try to use 4G, etc. We haven't really found a reliable way of doing that in the current release.""The one thing that did put me off of the solution was that, after they were taken over by GFI, the licensing and a few other items have gotten very complicated.""We'd like to have more integrations Kerio Operator.""The denial of service could also be improved. There recently was a big issue with denial of service attacks and it was a bit laborious.""If I would suggest anything, it would be to expand on its multifactor authentication to be a little bit more user-friendly. They should do multifactor authentications for the client itself perhaps, rather than served on a webpage, in a page hijack, that might be more user-friendly, but I don't have a lot of complaints about it. It's doing its job. You have to have a certain amount of skills to configure these things anyway, the ones that we use on-site doing point-to-point, and we've been tricked up a few times with their interfaces.""There isn't a lot to be improved. It works well as it is, but they can maybe improve the reporting side."

Pricing and Cost Advice

    Reviews from Real Users

Here is some feedback from some of our users who are currently using the solution:

PeerSpot user Brian C., Senior Technology Specialist, VP at Unified Technology Solutions, writes "It is very comprehensive and simple. It has all the active protections. It's updated. We love that you can set how often it is updated so you can work on what is right for you. A large company with a lot of bandwidth can update the virus definitions and security definitions hourly, if they want. A smaller site that's remote, where maybe updating the definitions will eat into the bandwidth, we can schedule those more to go later at night. It's very flexible and works for us in all types of situations. This is great because then we don't have to learn seven different products to be able to work with seven different scenarios."

Andy D., IT Manager at Flare Technologies, praises how easy it is to use and says, "One thing we use quite a lot, as well, is the DHCP Server, because we do a lot of work where all our devices need to have static IP addresses. Rather than going around and configuring every box, we do it all through DHCP reservations. It's easier. We've got a record of it. We can manipulate it if we need to change something or change some hardware. It's all easy. Even guys who are not used to using it can pick it up quite quickly."
